  1. @$%%&@ squirrels... who cares about those tree rats. They'll be great for my kids to plink with the 22. What matters to me are which produce better and are easier to grow hazelnuts or chestnuts?
  2. Great info... I have access issues on some property and was rethinking trying to plant a plot of say clover or brassica. I'm now thinking of planting some apple and pear trees. Why does it seem more people are planting crabapple than say red or gold delicious? And I don't hear much about people planting pears... why not? I am definitely going to find some places for some chestnuts and hazelnuts as I think I'll be able to reap some rewards from them sooner than most other trees/shrubs Thoughts?
  3. Wow no kidding. How old was he in '07? They're amazing animals when it comes to being able to heal from such a significant wound.
  4. Gonna head out Friday morn... can't freakin wait. I am dying to get back out there. I took this Friday and Monday off along time ago and I'm thinkin it was a wise move. I was judging by the full moon being tomorrow night. I'm hoping they're not wore out from running all night but I think the rut is starting to really kick in and am hopeful to see some nice horns. I'm plannin on pulling 2 all dayers Saturday and Sunday. Anyone else have first hand info on where we are at in the rut?
  5. I agree with Mossy. Good luck Paula. Hope they scare a big one right to ya
  6. I go in and out of the woods in the dark. I usually wear a hat with 2 or 3 leds but rarely have them on unless it's really pitch black. I've never had any problems.... O... except for one time in Maine. I went up there for deer. Sat in a ladder stand all afternoon only seeing a spike. It got dark while waiting for my ride to let me know he was on his way. I got the call so I started out of the woods, with out my light on, and in an instant I felt the ground rumble, brush and branches breaking. Mind you its pitch black and I can't see a dam thing. I though a dam freight train was coming my way. I jumped behind a tree from the direction I thought it was and felt the wooosh of a very big animal run by. I'm sure it was a moose that I startled when I was walking out. It clompered off and I never got the chance to see it for sure. Ya I was pretty scared. It made for good talk that night at the table. I've hunted in Greene county regularly and had bear no closer than 35 yards from my tree but never on the ground. Coyotes don't really scare me.
  7. good info... I always just called the town I was interested in and they would email me the maps. I've had good luck in opening 2 windows, google maps and the tax map and then resize google map to equal the tax map. I toggle both of them and can get a real good idea of natural bounderies and lay of the property I'm hunting.
  8. On the scale of dumb questions.... It was up ther pretty high. But honestly the map doesn't have a scale so we don't know your distance to the other hunters. If your in fear of being shot than my answer would be "HELL YES" and also "find another spot". Why would you position yourself so close? Is that a hot trail or something? Do your deer move more north-south or east-west?
  9. Really I think he just posted that nonsense to get a response. I do agree that the difficulty level and the risk go up with shooting a bow vs a gun. It's the idiots that take bad shots or don't make the effort to completey follow up on tracking a wounded deer that should be the target of his anger not bowhunters alone. If you don't like it move! I hear they don't allow bow hunting in Los Angeles.
  10. oops.... forgot to say I'd probably pass. nice buck but too young with too little mass. not good for meat and not good for the wall either. give him another year then.... THWACK!
  11. all taste magnificent??? you obviously haven't tasted a mature buck... blaacchh If you want meat shoot does well said Gjs4!! couldn't agree more
  12. well said Doc... I could not agree more. The fact that he didn't cut out his misses or blunders made his show better than most others. It's a shame that most of the other hunting shows spend 20 minutes out of the 30 on commercials and endorsements rather than informing and exciting footage. I always watched his shows! I had my DVR set to record all his shows. I was amazed one day after noticing alot of reruns that he was in a wheelchair. I am a very active guy.... and I happen to have one leg. I do it "the hard way... the Barta way" every time I strap my climber and backpack on with my bow in hand and head out to trek a mile into the woods at 4am. I can really sympathize with his situation. Good luck all
  13. Yup I would agree. Thanx and good luck to you... whack a monster
  14. I'll say 3.5 years old and 140ish Yup... I'd be flingin my arrows at him
