  1. These posts sound like a bunch of crap to me! Seemingly we are all full of (it). It does look like coyote scat. Anyone have a photo of what the "pig bomb" could leave to serve as a warning?
  2. Actually, to a lesser extent, I have also heard the same kind of changes on private lands in our valley and hilltops. There seems to be the traditional craziness of opening day or at least opening half-day and then it gets real quiet for the rest of the season. It's kind of like hunting only holds the interest of these guys for a few hours and then if nothing happens they all go home. That is a massive change from the 60's and 70's and some of the 80's. I remember you could actually track the progress of a buck across the woods by the shots. The woods was thick with hunters and when they got cold, they didn't go home, they simply got up and started still-hunting. That kept the deer moving throughout the day. And yes, the weekdays were quite quiet, but every weekend was another big day. Thanksgiving morning is not the big day that it used to be either. Something is really changing. Doc You are spot on Doc! Considering that hunters spend less time in the woods these days and for the past several years the weather (southern zone) has been lousy, do you trust the DEC deer kill statistics. Are hunters these days more efficient? Sorry for hijacking this thread, I just could not control myself!
  3. The scenario you described above happens all too often on State land. What compounds the problem is when you find the hunter in your location the next morning/afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. Hunting will always be potentially dangerous. However, hunting on State Land has the potential to be a lot more dangerous than hunting private land. At least on private land the hunts are more safer because they are better organized and usually all the hunters know the location of their hunters. On state land the number of hunters decreases dramatically after the opening weekend. By the time ML season rolls around I usually have the area I hunt all to my self.
  5. I don't do a lot of turkey hunting, but I think I can see where turkey hunting might be a bit more dangerous than you might think. First of all there are a lot of goofy hunters out there who still take "sound shots". It sounds stupid, but it still happens. Then you have hunters sitting in the woods trying to sound like a turkey. Then you set up decoys that could conceivably draw fire from anywhere within 360 degrees. Some of that could be in line with the hunter. It's still something that requires an awful lot of irresponsibility to happen, but there are a few additional factors that kind of make the odds of something ugly happening a bit higher. Doc Doc, I do a lot of turkey hunting with my teenage nephews. On one occasion we were set up with our backs to large diameter oak tree (with a strip of blaze orange 6' above us wrapped around the tree's circumference) atop a side hill with two decoys 20+yards away from us. As I was cutting and putting we heard several questionable gobbles to our left well out of our line of site. Next thing we heard several twigs snap, then into clear view appeared two yahoos dressed in camo who made a beeline for the decoys. Needless to say I yelled "don't shoot". They were both dumbfounded. I told them that their style of hunting was dangerous, they responded with the proverbial f-u and left. As I later found out, these two guys were subsequently arrested by the DEC for road hunting turkeys with loaded firearms in their vehicle.
  6. They scare the hell out of me too! What scares me are hunters who take multiple shots at running dear who are in close proximity to me. I used to hunt with a group of guys who loaded their guns well before legal shooting light and proceeded to walk in a line through the woods to their individual stands. Not all of them carried flashlights. I made it a point to get in the woods well before them and I never walk in the woods with a loaded weapon before or after legal shooting hours. The hunter stupidity list is endless. God must be watching over them and their fellow hunters.
  7. The bumper sticker is a "Great Idea"!
  8. That would be something to behold!
  9. My "pet peeve" is with hunters who do not respect the land in which they hunt on. As I predominately hunt state land I am disgusted with the mess (trash) some hunters leave behind. I feel like thier mother, having to clean up after them!

    Pig Bomb

How did you like Hogzilla? now there was a pile of bacon. Doc Hogzilla was some pice of pork. And as the show mentioned the PIG Bomb is mutating. Pretty soon they will have to hunt them with 50cals!
  11. I have had one for many years also and I am very happy with it.
  12. I think it should include a caricature of DOC.
  13. Its amazing how much huntable state land exists in Schoharie County that is under utilized!
  14. I always tell my wife that she has man's feet! And lived to tell her again!
  15. I pee in these bags which cause the urine to solidify. They seal tight and odor free. I have been using them for years without a problem. They make them for Number 2 also!
  16. There is no doubt about the increase in the bear population. I have hunted land off of Patria Road and private land in the general area. The deer take is down. Years ago there was numerous hunters who pushed the deer and some really big deer were killed. each year I made my donation to the Summit Country Store Big Buck?Doe contest. Years ago I was fortunate to shoot the heaviest doe (seven years old by DEC estimates).Nowadays hunter numbers being down the deer just dont move. This is probably the case in many areas though!
  17. He probably is cooking up tarsal gland stew from butchered deer, straining it and concentrating the liquid. I have used it and it sure stinks! Whether or not it works, I do not know.
  18. Interestingly the doe take far exceeds the buck take!
  19. wow a die hard tough, do it the hard way John Wayne kinda guy like you Doc looking to find the easy way out by using a rifle, my GOSH ??? Emotion tends to get in the way of sound science and sound statistical analysis.
  20. I have hunted in West Fulton,Schoharie Co. for the last 30 years and have seen the deer population fluctuate over those years. But for the past several years the success rate among camp members has severely declined. Hopefully, things will be better this upcoming season.
  21. If NYS intends to maintain any credibility in the lifetime license program, they had better not start tacking on fees and stamps and any other kinds of flim-flam do-dads trying to rip us off for more. There can be no legitimate excuse for doing that, and that would amount to outright deceit, lying and theft. I'm getting mighty tired of sportsmen being considered a easy soft touch just because NYS can't seem to manage money. This kind of unlimited ripping off of sportsmen and women amounts to an attack against hunters and fishermen which is no less effective than if it were done by the animal rights crowd. And while all this stuff is going on, non-sportsmen are getting increased benefits and use of DEC services and resources FOR FREE. Every year, more and more DEC resources are siphoned off to non-sporting activities and facilities and we are left to pay for it. Yes, we are a soft touch, but somebody better quickly become aware that there is a limit as to how many times they can keep reaching into our pockets and how deep. And everytime they blow their budget, I keep hearing, "Oh that's ok, we can afford to pay more". Well, I hate to say it, but I can't and won't and I believe I'm not alone on that. If they aren't smart enough to put that Lifetime License money to work in the market and simply blow it all as it comes in the door, there is absolutely no reason why I or any other sportsmen should be pulling more money out of our pocket for their stupidity. If there are people who have so much excess money that they want to donate to the DEC ...... by all means feel free to do so, but don't be indicating that the rest of us be strapped with anymore funding of government waste and mismanagement. Doc Doc, I am afraid that the bureaucrats have us by the short hairs. The hunting community represents an untapped resource of revenue. Take a look at the CT license fee schedule for a dose of what perhaps the future entails.it makes me sick!
  22. While either turkey hunting or bowhuntig, I make it a point to place a piece of blaze orange above the spot where I am posted. I am amazed and thankful that there are not many hunting accidents during the fall season when bowhunters, small game hunters and turkey hunters are afield at the same time. Hunting is a dangerous sport with no margin for error when it comes to safety. It behooves us to take all necessary precautions to ensure that we hunt safely.

    Pig Bomb

I saw the show too! Its an eye opener for sure. I hate to think what will happen should the pig bomb explode in suburban areas. I most certainly would insist that the wife retreive the newspaper from the front lawn.
