I would think that rattling would work on private land where the deer are not pressured. On State Land, all bets are off however, the deer are positively nervous and will react to (excuse me) to a mouse fart!

For me,during gun season, hunting primarily on state land, and hoping for bitter cold, the best time is anywhere from several hours after first light to noon time when the nimrods can no longer tolerate the cold and begin walking around to stay warm.

I cannot shoot enough deer to satisfy the demands for venison from friends and family. The problem for me lies in the cost of having the deer butchered. Years ago I performed the task myself but since having moved to a new home some years back I do not have the room nor the time. Thankfully, my brother offers to share the cost of having the deer butchered and I give him first dibs on the prime cuts.

The simplest means of communicating ones position on crossbows to our state legislature is via email. Be brief and to the point. Less is more. Visit NY.gov for a comprehensive email addressees book for all the state legislators. Oh, by the way they do respond! -
How many of us have donated venison? What was your experience?

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)

Perhaps the following should have been posted on the "How other Hunters irritate you " thread but nevertheless. For those who have hunted at California Hill in Putnam County, they may have seen the hunter who dresses in buckskins, wears a raccoon skin cap, hunts with a flintlock and forgoes wearing blaze orange. I have encountered him several times (HE STILL HUNTS) and myself and others have berated him for being so irresponsible. He never answers, just stares stoically at you, like a cigar store Indian. The ENCONS know of him too and just shake their heads in disbelief when you mention him. -
Donated to the same program as Hunters for the Hungry as far as I have heard. Unfortunately, in the southern part of the state there are too few processors who participate in the food bank program. In particular, there is one processor listed ( on Long island) and during the season you must call them first to see if they will accept a deer for processing. Its a shame for there are a lot of people out there who are hungry and would welcome the venison.

What you have described is a common occurence on State land!

Gun hunting is "potentially" dangerous to ones health and well being! For me wearing blaze orange lessens the chances of being mistaken for a game animal or not being seen by another hunter. Albeit, its a tenuous safety blanket but nonetheless it provides me with a sense of security. Without quesion, anyone who decides to forgo wearing blaze orange during gun season is allowing themselves to become a potential shooting victim. To date, no one has come up with a legitimate reason as to why B/O is not necessary to wear during the open gun season. I am with Doc, stupidity is the reason! Good luck. -

What I posted from the internet was the "boiler plate special". One would have thought that the DEC would have issued a "Press Release". -

It perhaps will only take one incident where a hunter is wounded because he failed to wear blaze orange to make some of us realize its importance. -

I guess the line in the sand has to be drawn somewhere. The question is when will it be redrawn again!

I guess Ted is a few arrows short in the quiver these days.

I find it reprehensible and outrageous that certain individuals and organizations can promote/practices such programs (for profit) upon game animals and in turn sell it to the hunting community as both necessary and beneficial for the overall health of the species. We cant be so ignorant as to not realize that what they are promoting/practicing is animal husbandry for wildlife! I guess its the American way, all about the Benjamin's!

Opening day two years ago by me, it was a monsoon. I saw plenty of deer that day and filled my doe tag.

I bow hunt primarily with a Ben Pearson Mustang 716, 50#@ 28", right handed. I have several Fred Bear recurves also which were handed down to me. Unfortunately for me, bow hunting is probably out for me this year due to shoulder surgery earlier this year. Despite the PT, twice a week, the shoulder has not improved enough to allow me to draw a bow without discomfort. We will see! Good luck, Bill

Dirty little secret!

Doc, I agree, what I would like to see ( as a point of information) is how many filled DMP's were transferred each season. Each year, I am always offered unfilled DMP's from hunters who's season is over. Believe it or not, many of these guys (LOL) ask me to shoot a deer for them. In the past I have filled several of the extra tags and donated the venison to local food banks which participate in the program. In my opinion, enough venison cannot be donated for there are a lot of people in this state who go hungry each day.

The screw in step foot rest snapped off from the vertical riser forming a point which gouged the inside of my right calf which required nearly 20 stitches to close the wound. I was lucky that it was only the first step! In any event, screw in steps are only as god as the wood they are screwed into. Other than the remote possibility of them breaking, there is always a chance that they can pull out. On rare occasions, the only stands which I will hunt from are ladder stands equipped with a tether line to a HSS which allow for seemingly safe accent and decent. Good luck!

The DEC will adjust bag limits to suit their goals. Take a look at the NCDNR bag limits for the upcoming season. Does the future of hunting in NY include increased bag limits which are similar to other states who are experiencing increased deer populations and lower hunter numbers? Only time will tell but over the past 25 years bag limits in NY have certainly changed to the benefit of all hunters.

Latin for "no contest." In a criminal proceeding, a defendant may enter a plea of nolo contendere, in which he does not accept or deny responsibility for the charges but agrees to accept punishment. The plea differs from a guilty plea because it cannot be used against the defendant in another cause of action. For example, pleading nolo contendere to criminal charges side steps possible estoppel claims from being filed in a civil lawsuit. Nolo contendere pleas differ from Alford pleas in this regard. See Alford plea.
