  1. I always stay in stand for 30 minutes regardless of the hit, climb down quietly, inspect the arrow and make my decision from there.....but yeah, a lost deer is a lost deer whether it be to weather, coyotes or a bad hit. I would never climb down right away and go to the hit site, many deer will bed right down and that commotion can send them packing.

I've heard good things about the ever calm stuff. Never used it but maybe I will give it a try? I'll have two of us in the ground blinds this year. So double our scent laid down coming and going. I have well thought out entrance but close to the blinds, the ever calm may help. May give it a try in a couple early season set ups.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe it's an attractant as in a scent they follow........I smear it on the trees around my stand and I think it more or less gives them the impression that it's a "safe" area.

Thats not what evercalm is.. Evercalm smells like a barn yard. Sounds like you have the secret vanilla killa formula, anyone remember that stuff?

yup, I remember it and used it quite often, can't say much about it.........Evercalm is exactly what you said, and it's pretty much the only scent I'll spend money on because I've had good results every time I've used it and had deer close.

  4. I say give it your best shot before you start sucking some other substance into your lungs to replace it........nothing you can't do if you really want......toughest part is if having a drink brings the craving on, it was with me so I gave that up too. I lost about 30 pounds and feel great because of it.

No if you shoot through the front shoulder you will most likely still hit heart lungs and all sorts of veins... The deer will die just as quickly as with a double lung bow shot, it just won't run away. Also
If it did drop in its tracks I could always take a well placed follow up shot to finish it off.... I really started this thread just to see what people think. I'm sure there are better alternatives out there.

I think it's a bad idea.....most likely isn't good enough, nor is hopefully getting in a follow up shot. It kinda sounds like you're going out with something you already know isn't a great choice.

  6. Manner of Taking It is illegal to take or hunt wildlife:

    • While in or on a motor vehicle (except by special permit—see page 14)

    • With the aid of a vehicle’s lights • On or from any public road

    • With any firearm equipped with a silencer

    • With any firearm which continues to fire as long as the trigger is held back (an automatic firearm)

    • With any semi-automatic firearm with a capacity to hold more than 6 rounds, except:

      1. Firearms using .22 or .17 caliber rimfire ammunition, or

      2. Firearms altered to reduce their capacity to no more than 6 shells at one time in the magazine and chamber combined, or

      3. Autoloading pistols with a barrel length of less than eight inches

  7. I smoked my last one back in January, cold turkey and so far zero problems or cravings........you can do it. In the beginning I replaced it by drinking ungodly amounts of water and coffee to replace the need to do something, but eventually I reduced the coffee intake and now I'm even down to one or two cups of that a day as well.

Actually i use the shotgun because lately been hunting shotgun only zone .

I use iron sites on it so siting in is not a big deal .  And shots are under 100 yards you can't see more then that where I hunt .  Anyone ever hunt with a sks ?  I have one of those a got over 20 years ago only because back then, you could get them for almost free $99 never use it on deer before .  I think if I wanted to use a miltary type gun caliber 7 ×62×39  is better then  .223 .  Maybe I will dust it off and take it out to rifle zone  for a deer hunt  one of these days . only thing not sure about is putting a plug  in the gun so it can take only 5 rounds  ,good enough or do I need to change the box clip to a  5 round one to  use it legally for deer hunting  . I have seen people use them never asked about that tho .

The way I read the law looks like all that you need is a,plug if I'm not mistaken.

you can can load that sucker sucker right to the top.........throw a few extra magazines in your bag as well,  but make sure you top them off first.

In general any deer over 180 dressed is a big deer in my book.  I was lucky enough to catch one over 200 in 2010.  Depending on the time of year and how active they are in the rut can make a big difference as NYAntler stated.  Food resources is another factor along with genes.

I know typically 200lbs is a mark many would like to hit and is considered a very big buck.  By the time we finished dragging this deer out I was getting weight estimates of 225-240, he hit the scale 3 days later at 207lbs.

Do you think I was happy?  Still can't get over how awesome this buck and the adventure was 6 years later.  Just went down and thanked him and his 2 brothers for the adventures they have put me through over the past 28 years chasing the great whitetail.

    now that's a deer I don't doubt the weight of.....very nice.

By the way, they had no "camp" per se. But they stayed at the Merrit Motel every year. I doubt that is even around anymore.

Lol.  Yea, I deny even posting this thread.  Once again, thank you Pygmy.  I am going to go shoot a gun or change the oil on my truck now (but the carpet stays).

one question, latex gloves or no latex gloves when you change your oil?
