  1. The question really is at what point is the line drawn against technically advanced hunting implements being used in "special seasons" that were originated and supposed to be for primitive weapons?

    Al

good question....but, I think the Genie is already out of the bottle.

  2. Thats not the only difference

you can argue all you want....not gonna change that thought pattern. I'll be honest, you wanna know why I broke out the crossbow last year? because it was so much easier then trying to kill a deer with my compound.....plain and simple.

  3. just because someone is not for something, doesn't necessarily mean they're against it.........there's tons of stuff that isn't for me, but I could care less if someone else wants to do it. I won't fight for that cause, but won't stand in its way either.

  4. Compared to past years, this is a phenomenal stat. Maybe we should take a minute to pat ourselves on the back a bit.

It would be interesting to know just what accounts for this. Is it some huge improvement in hunter safety training, or maybe safety being publicized better, or is it the shrinking hunters, or more blaze orange or any of a number of other things that might influence that number?

less hunters and the style of hunting today.....most spend all day in a stand as opposed to walking around, that's my guess anyway.

  5. My guess is that most who are against it fear the added hunting pressure, and not just from young folks, elderly, disabled and women. I have also heard some say they don't like to share the woods with people who don't want to spend or don't have the time required to develop proficiency with a regular bow.

I never could relate to the fact that some like to increase the challenge to themselves and tip the odds more in favor of the quarry. While the deer may get more chance to escape, what about more chance of being wounded and not recovered (they never seem to acknowledge that part)? Personally, I want the deer to have minimal chance of escape and minimal chance of being wounded and I have seen the crossbow help me in both those areas. I would post my "heart-shot" picture again, but that might push some of the anti's over the edge. I hope to maintain my 100% clean, one-shot kill record with my crossbow, which I was never able to achieve with a compound. That said though, I don't mind sharing the woods with those bent on the increased challenge and who prefer the traditional archery methods of recurve and longbow, or even with the compound guys.

I am holding back a bit here in my condemnation of the anti-crossbow folks because I think it is important at this time, when full inclusion finally appears near, that we put this behind us and reunite to keep our hunting tradition going in NY for many more generations. Dwindling hunter numbers hurts us all in the long run. The hunter is the best friend the deer has in NY, regardless of the weapon he chooses. United we stand, divided we fall.

9 times out of 10 it's not the weapon that wounds an animal, it's the person wielding it.

  6. So first 2 weeks trad only

    2nd 2 weeks vertical only

    3rd 2 weeks xbow only

    I'm in...that's a solid compromise

yup, now all I gotta do is buy a recurve and I'm in for all three...no complaints here at all.

  7. Right....I'm just looking for a logical reason for any archery enthusiast to be so anti xbow....unless they are strictly trad shooters.....then they can say anything they want. Lol

I'll give them the first week.

  8. But it's not split...I'm ok with it being xbow only last 2 weeks of archery....but no verts then....but I'm sure that won't fly either

right, it's not really split if you look at it like that....but that would be harder then getting full inclusion.

  9. I'm more for the preservation of separate seasons, or a progression of seasons then anything else.....I own a crossbow and was quite content with the way it is/was. I felt the same way when they allowed scoped inline muzzleloaders into that season......I won't fight against it and will use it more if it happens, but am quite content with the split season.

  10. My oldest son takes his kids ( one at a time ) during gun season when it is snowing and blowing . They either sit in a blind or in the tree house in Italy Valley .

I think letting kids hunt with a gun during bow season because they can hunt in warm weather is a joke . I don't know any other fathers that take their kids out during gun season , when it is colder ,  because it might spoil dad's chance of shooting the big wall hanger .

If the kid doesn't shoot a deer during the Columbus Day weekend does he / she get a Participation Trophy ?

my son went with me from the age of about 8-10 through all types of weather, didn't need a youth hunt to take him...but when they made one, we took full advantage....and yeah, he still went during the regular season.

  11. I don't agree. I believe their intention was to have it in better weather and in a setting where the deer were more calm.

not to mention there are plenty of guys who use this opportunity to take out kids who aren't even theirs to go hunting......whether the kids come from non hunting households or maybe just nobody around to take them, not everything has a selfish, "I don't want to take my kids out any other time of the year" attitude about it. I think it's great.

  12. Should swing out by me. The amount of shooting near the property and on the property I hunt for the September goose season is more than any shooting during gun, and we don't see the "flip a switch" to nocturnal behavior.  Add in the other  small game hunting and I see quite a bit of Pre and early October shooting anyways.

yeah, I would think that bowhunters leave a very small "footprint" in the woods compared to other activities....

  13. I hunt the January season in Tompkins County every year.  It's in January for a reason, to prevent does who are bred from giving birth.  Essentially, 2 deer for 1 kind of deal.  I've never even been able to tell weather or not a doe was pregnant when field dressing it.  I'm sure if I looked hard enough, but I'm not one to dig through the gut pile.  I just leave it for the yotes and  get my deer in the truck.

I looked too hard one year...wish I hadn't, but when you consider that you just killed an animal and are already arm deep in it's guts it's not that disturbing.

  14. The spots that have the 2 week doe season I get 4 dmp every year my dad gets 4 anyone who wants them can get 4
