  1. Not opposed, but its pretty sad a youth season is even needed. The gov't needs to make a special season so some guy will take his kid hunting? My dad used to just take us with him anytime.

just an added bonus for guys who love hunting with their kids to be out there, I can't imagine anyone using that as the one and only opportunity to spend time with their kids....yes, sad if that's the case.

  2. Well that's the thing this entire conversation only applies to a small section of the state.

exaclty right! I hunt 4W & 4R, no overabundance up there...

  3. Current setbacks are 150ft (50 yds) for bow and 250ft (~84Yds) for crossbow. The new bill proposes both bow and crossbow at 150ft (50yds) setback. The more critical safety difference between bow and crossbow is in handling a cocked crossbow. One needs to be aware that a cocked crossbow is like an armed rat trap and it's one mean rat trap. The archers hands, not holding the string in tension, are free to wander into triangular string path. While shooting, a raised thumb on the hand holding the fore stock can be clipped off short. Other than that I think a crossbow is as safe as a standard bow.

I don't think the setbacks and safety have anything to do with the injury one might do to ones self. I'm talking about how far the projectile will carry, I was surprised at how quickly the crossbow bolt dropped as opposed to the arrow from my compound.

  4. Then lets take the first week of gun to antlerless only in the problem areas. It only makes the most sense the get the "problem" dealt with as quickly as possible. I really don't care where they choose to do it. I am not a fan of decreasing a hunter opportunity, that is why I was for a early September 9 day (two weekends). But I understand how many my have an issue dealing with the meat in warm temps. So then how about in early January? I firmly believe that the best was to encourage participation in the reduction they want is to EXPAND opportunity, not take it away.

we have the month of January on Long Island, I enjoy it. I think the problem with that would be lack of participation.....the majority of casual hunters are done by that point, so probably little impact overall.

  5. Am I the only rational human that lives in NY?

More than 80% of ALL deer harvested are by a gun.  More than 90% of all hunters in NY hunt the gun season.

I am SO confused why "deer management" became a bow issue and why they are trying to cram other devises into bow season to control doe?  Put population objectives in the hands of gun hunters.  Hell, make the week before "opening day" doe only for a week.  I don't care, but for the love of all things on this planet, lets agree that you can't take the minority and control the majority (even though our liberal state is ineffectively run that way)

Can everyone just agree from a pure logical standpoint (remove your preference to your hunting style) that having gun hunters "control" deer numbers is the most rational possibility?  You couldn't possibly argue that.

I just don't understand why this has been made so difficult and so controversial (that is a rhetorical statement, because I do understand why bow hunters are being punished, but its not worth debating any more).

can't argue the fact that guns would be the most effective, I think the concern is of guns slowly entering the earlier seasons that have been designated bow only for years in order to accomplish that.....could be wrong.

  6. I will say I've seen my share of clown hunters during bow season, they will be out there no matter what the season is.....I get the fear of guys who never bow hunted before running out and getting a crossbow and stomping through the woods like the're hunting with a gun and lobbing shots beyond the effective range, I have that same concern, didn't see it last year and hope I never do...time will tell.

  7. Seems kind of counter productive the way they went about it. The areas that are the most difficult on population control (bow only areas)were the areas they left out of the new crossbow inclusion.

I really question as to whether or not the people who make theses laws even know the capabilities of a compound -vs- a crossbow......I haven't done any studies, but with my limited experience with a crossbow, I'm fairly confident that if I shot my compound alongside the crossbow, the projectile from the compound would travel quite a bit further then the one from my crossbow. I'm assuming it's a safety concern with the crossbow that limits where it can be used and the discharge distance allowed......

  8. Very similar? Where do I start? Let's begin with the fact that there's a reason myself and others promote its use for elderly and disabled. That in and of itself should tell you enough about its differences.

I used a crossbow successfully this past season.....I didn't find it awkward, cumbersome, unwieldy, heavy or anything else. I saw the deer coming from 100 yards away, sat in my treestand, rested it on my knee, took the safety off, followed it in the scope and when it stepped into the shooting lane I put the crosshairs on it and simply pulled the trigger.....pretty simple. I don't get when people argue the difficulties associated with them.

  9. from the grumblings I heard when the 2 week antlerless was implemented, I would blame low harvest numbers on lack of participation as opposed to the weapon allowed....but I may very well be wrong.

  10. I have nothing against crossbows...I could give a rat's patoot either way on that subject..

But if you think legalizing crossbows across the board is going to solve( or even affect) deer population issues, you are dreaming..

didn't the two week antlerless only bow season in some parts of NY already fail miserably the first year it was imposed?

  11. Dash of worsteshire (great spelling I know) sauce, sprinkle of salt and sprinkle of black pepper. All you need

sounds easy enough... I always heard to add an egg to hold it together because it doesn't have any fat, is that not needed?

  12. Young man didn't mean to run the ECO over but wanted to get away. I'm not ok with paying to feed and ruin him in prison. County jail time for each misdemeanor not to be served consecutively. Enough fines to make him forcibly pay for a years. Take the truck he was driving. Community service related to park and DEC enough to keep him busy when he's not working to also dig himself out financially, while paying for his own room and board. I'm sure that way his rap sheet will get him plenty of looks and less than respectful treatment for each hour of his years worth of service too. A decade down the road he'll still have a life but one he was taught to earn and not screw up in the process.

I'm sure they already have his truck...probably lost that the day of the incident. I say one night in a maximum security prison instead of a lengthy stay in County lockup should do it.

  13. That's a very reasonable answer to the question, which is surely why it wont happen...

not to mention that very few are willing to give an inch to gain a few yards, that want all or nothing......if that happened, I would personally adapt and learn how to use a recurve, not stomp my feet and cry because I "lost" something.

  14. So do you think that they should go back to longbow/recurve only?

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll give my opinion....it'll never happen but I would give up the first two weeks of archery to recurve and longbow only and then follow that with compound and crossbow season. I'd do the same with muzzleloader season, the ones now are just the same as centerfire and most better then shotguns.
