  1. So apparently you slept through all the hate launched at Melissa Bachman and Kendall Jones when pictures were posted of them with their legally killed no name lions?

I will have to say that what's happening now is 10x's worse then those two..........this one has been running on every news channel for 2-3 days and is all over the internet. I don't do facebook and quite honestly would not have even known about those two if it wasn't for the hunting websites I visit......and not to mention many in the hunting community is bashing what happened.

  2. if what the outfitter did is true, that's a pretty shi**y move on his part and I hope they punish him appropriately, the fact that the Lion was crippled and killed 40 hours later is also something that bothers me, but it happens in hunting. The attack on the hunter via Social Media is disgusting.........other than that I'll wait to hear the rest of the facts.

  3. So hunting is not so much for...The Challenge..for you?  Just simply set up,kill the deer and head for the freezer.  That works for many.

not quite that simple...........I just would rather have the chance to get out and take a few deer and enjoy myself while doing so, I certainly will pass on some deer based on several different factors, so I'm certainly not an "if it's brown it's down" guy. I would guess if my life was consumed by deer and I spent the majority of the year watching and patterning them, things may be different, but I'm not and doubt I ever will be. I fully understand what drives the trophy hunter, but that's not me......the only challenge I face deer hunting is finding the right spot to hang my stand.

  4. so, if genetics and nutrition are considered by many to have the biggest influences on growing big deer, is there really a point in imposing antler restrictions in an area that historically have neither? I'm assuming the nutrition would have to remain consistent throughout the year(s) and not change drastically from year to year. Take the Catskills for instance, after 3 years worth of AR's, all we're really seeing as far as legal bucks are ones that would probably get a pass in many other areas of NY that do offer those two things.....

  5. Some people take their squirrel hunting very seriously. Comments like this is degrading and disrespectful of other hunters. I, personally, am very offended by such comments.

I apologize....I in no way intended to to offend anyone. I was just thinking that if you're hunting them with a shotgun you really don't have to overthink it.

  6. should I get low brass or high brass?  whats the difference?  Is one softer than the other?

softer recoil? yes......and also consider the fact that early season you may have foliage to deal with so more shot may be needed. But, you're hunting squirrel, so don't over think it.

  7. not to derail the thread but most people don't think it's easier to drag a buck by the hind legs.  nobody ever does it and always drags by the antlers.  i think you're lifting the heaviest part of the buck and trying to drag it on top of that. hind legs are long enough most don't even need to bend over while dragging.  you can do it however you want and I'm not saying it's wrong.  just think about it.

I've dragged a few doe by the bag legs and it's definitely easier......but it does make a mess of the hide, wouldn't do it for a deer I planned on having mounted

  8. my theory has always been that if a deer runs for the next county after every little sound it hears, you would never get one........I've killed deer literally within 10-20 minutes after rattling my climber up a tree.

  9. I would guess that the raccoon might be a bit of a fight for a coyote... they aren't much for prey that can fight back.

yeah, raccoon's are pretty ornery creatures when they need to be........I witnessed a raccoon get into it with a Pitbull a few weeks ago and although he wound up losing he put up a hell of a fight, not pretty at all.

  10. ok great, Thanks!  can you recommend a particular low brass ammo?  ill be using a 12 gauge, I was thinking a 410 for my girlfriend.  would that be ok in your opinion or should she go with a 12 also?  we were originally going to use .22 but we will be hunting a small forest and the bullet travel makes me a bit nervous

.410 is more then adequate for squirrel...........I bet I killed more small game with my .410 growing up then I did with all other gauges combined, not including waterfowl and turkey.

  11. This guy also seems to be the type who is trying to build an impressive resume of trophies in order to gain entry into the elitist 1% of the world's big game hunters.  Purely a drive for social status IMHO.

I would think you're probably correct......I hate to make assumptions, but I have to think that the story behind taking a trophy like that is not very impressive.

  12. "One does not hunt in order to kill.  On the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted."

I'm sure the hunt included all of the luxuries and extras that people who hunt Africa expect on their Safaris.

yeah, I'm sure it's a nice vacation, and the more I think about it the less crazy it sounds..........I think a week in Disney for a family of 4 or 5 will put you over 10 grand if you don't spare costs, and that's more like work than a vacation.

  13. Not surprised. Governor tags here in the U.S. for elk or sheep go for much more than that.

I'm just surprised that killing something to stick on a wall is worth that kind of cash to somebody.................but by the looks of it, it's gonna probably cost him a lot more when this is done.

  14. Not to get into a xbow debate but if using one on nov 1st was ok last year, it should be ok this year, if gun starts a week later this year than why not 3 weeks of crossbow? closer to the rut doesnt matter because last year I had a rifle in my hand on this years "closer to the rut" crossbow week, so Im not really gaining advantage am I?

because I believe the law states crossbow is legal during the last two weeks of archery, not a specific date..........much like the regular southern zone season starts "the 3rd Saturday in November"....not a specific date.

  15. He's right jjb. Last year the early bow season started 10/1, and last year crossbow started 11/1. This year opening day early is the same, but crossbow is 11/7.

    NM, lol.

while the date may change, it still starts the last 2 weeks of archery....so it's still two weeks of crossbow, you don't lose any time..........last year the regular season opened Nov. 15th, this year it starts a week later on the 21st.
