  1. About 7 miles outside of Saranac Lake, New York - elevation @ 2050'
  2. And here is the coyote - see it on the right side of the picture, standing on a fallen log -
  3. Just got back from my camp and checked the trail camera. I had several shots of a snowshoe rabbit, a coyote and several deer - all does. Here is a shot of one of the does.
  4. Thanks - it was my Dad's gun and he bought it new in 1964/65, right when Remington first came out with the .308. $158 - new! It has a very short factory barrel and from where it goes into the receiver to the tip of the muzzle is 19". Serial number 66270! No letters or anything else.
  5. I too am going to our camp today! Haven't been there since end of February. Yesterday it snowed, so I hope to see some good tracks near my trail cam. Will post (if there are any good ones) tonight.
  6. I understand your wish to buy a bolt gun, as I did for my first deer rifle, but depending on where you hunt, you may want to consider a short brush gun. I hunt in the Adirondacks, no trails, no people, no houses, no-nothing but deep woods. My Winchester .30-.30 is my go to gun when I am tracking.
  7. I could use some help - Am reloading some new 16 gauge hulls and although I am following the reloading tables, my final crimp is pushed in to where I can still see the pellets. Almost seems that the hull is to long OR there is not enough fill to provide a good crimp. Here is what I am using: HULL: Cheddite 16 gauge - new 2 3/4" POWDER: 27 grains -Blue Dot WAD: Remington SP16 1 1/8 ounce LEAD: 1 1/8 oz 7.5 Wad pressure is minimal. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  8. My personal favorite is my 1964 Remington 700 BDL in .308 with a 20" barrel. The bolt action gun you need is the one that YOU like...all the manufacturers listed are excellent and it will come down to your preferences: Caliber, Wood vs Synthetic, Blind magazine vs Hinged trap door vs clip, short action or long action. What ever you do, don't buy your bolt action gun to impress anyone else but yourself - LOL
  9. I hope they aren't reproducing....we have enough idiots in our country!
  10. http://www.ballisticproducts.com/ Found this company on the net, they sell new, primed, empty hulls from 8 gauge through .410 Hull 16ga 2-3/4" 16mm (bag/100) Item: 1391670 Price: $13.79
  11. After completing our cabin in the Adirondack Park, my wife came up with "DEFRAZZLE HEIM". So, if some of you remember the word "frazzle" means = The state of being completely exhausted or worn out: "I'm tired, worn to a frazzle". So, we came to name the cabin, Defrazzle Heim. The DEFRAZZLE meaning the opposite of the meaning and HEIM the German word for "home.
  12. Welcome to the site and to the hunting fraternity. There are plenty of hunting areas in New York State - depending on what you wish to hunt for, I sincerely suggest you ask lots of questions and listen to good advice. Be safe and always identify your target - bullets can't be called back. It's great to see you bringing your daughter on board.
  13. I have an older Gaspar Arizaga Side by Side in 16 Gauge for which I reload. Have been having a difficult time in finding empty hulls for reloading. I live in a small city and the 2 local gun ranges do not have anything to offer. Does anyone know where I can find some? Does anyone have a stash they no longer need? I am open to anything. Thanks for any replies - Ralf Plattsburgh, NY
  14. I am holding on - -let the show begin LOL
  15. Really good advice from Hunter and Larry302. At the end of the day what will be most important is what do YOU want to get out of this property. Long term income? Use of the land for yourself? Zero net/net income/expense at the end of each year? Other uses besides hunting to be considered could be leasing to a organization for their annual or part time uses, such as the USA Boy Scouts or similar. Any road that is followed should include a good real estate attorney. Best of luck to you.
  16. It's a very large areas, big whitetails with big racks...BUT...hard to hunt. No trails, lots of mountains, and no people. I remember on drag took me about 6 hours...up and down and up....
  17. What I am used to my area of upstate New York hunting land is leased for a set fee per year or per period. So, it could be 1,2, 5. 10 year lease for a fixed yearly sum. Here, usually a group of people would lease the land, and the property owner would set a maximum number of "members" on the lease. So, if it was 10 people, then the yearly lease cost would be divided by 10. Before proceeding with a lease, I would check into - 1. Liability Insurance - either by the owner and/or the lessee 2. Purpose for the lease - hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, parties etc. 3. What are the neighbors like? Would they enjoy having a leased property next to them? 4. What are the Town or County rules concerning the property? 5. Are there any deed restrictions on the property? 6. How long and for what is the lease for? Hunting season only? September through December? Anyway, I highly recommend checking all the above - good luck. What part of upstate New York is the property in? ... 34 acres at the top of a ridge with a pond and 3 bedroom cabin (no electric) with a barn and shed.
  18. Hi - I live in the Adirondack Park, near Saranac Lake, and moved here from Plattsburgh, NY. I moved to Plattsburgh, NY while still in the Air Force and retired in 1988 after 20+ years of service. I built our retirement home in the Adirondack Park and the 4 acres I own, is on and surrounded by a 110,000 acre parcel called the Santanoni Section. I love to hunt and use a bow, muzzleloader, shotgun and rifle. Fishing is also one of my favorite past time! Have hunted in Germany, Spain, Nebraska, Florida, Kentucky and New York. This years new big game regs should be intesresting - Regards to all
