  1. Whenever I encounter NYS DEC while fishing or hunting they don’t really bother me too much. On a boat they can be a PIA, but usually they just move along. However I hunt a lot of NY city property and their DEP folks aren’t that bright. About 4 years ago a shot a respectable 8 points (120 inches). After dragging it to the DEP parking area, the women DEP cop proceeds to check my license and the deer. She then asks me if it’s a male or female deer. The few other hunters in the parking lot almost fell over laughing at the poor women. I actually felt bad for her.
  2. Lunkerbass21 – This is the reason I started cutting my deer myself. It’s really not that hard. Once you get good at it usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. If you don’t have a place for this at your home, you can buy a deer hoist and quarter it in the woods. Taking the straps and four quarters out of the woods is a lot easier than taking a whole deer. Just finish the trimming at home.
  3. It’s my civic duty to obey the government and register my firearms if asked, but unfortunately my canoe overturned this pasted Tuesday night and all my guns sank to the bottom of river. I don’t own any weapon any longer... Learned this one from my Canadian friends a decade or so ago
  4. If you hunt from a stand, try a Marlin 12ga bolt action. With Lightfield slugs and a good scope you can reach out 120+ yard and get tight groups. Albeit, most of the shots will be much closer. I've shot at least a dozen deer with mine and none have ever gone more that 30 yards. Most just drop. if you plan on still hunting try a used Ithaca deerslayer with open sights. Good luck
  5. I am thinking about getting a lighter climbing stand for when I hunt a few miles from the road. Has anyone ever used an X-Stand? I understand that they are very light, but was wondering how easy they are to climb with. Thanks http://www.x-stand.com/
  6. Mac - I think Westchester opened up some of their parks to bow hunting. I'm not sure what the requirements are, but check out the link below http://parks.westchestergov.com/deer-management This program will resume in October 2012. Check back for updates. In response to the recommendations of the Westchester County Citizen’s Task Force on White-tailed Deer and Forest Regeneration and recognizing the success of regional municipalities with managing deer density, Westchester County will re-open sections of Muscoot Farm and Lasdon Park and Arboretum in Somers, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River and Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem for bow hunting deer in the autumn of 2012. Participants will be selected by testing and lottery. Westchester County hunting program dates will be announced as they become available. However, for planning purposes, hunters should be aware that during the season, Westchester County will permit hunting at: Sal J. Prezioso Mountain Lakes Park, Lasdon Park and Arboretum and Muscoot Farm seven days a week from 4:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, hunting hours will be Mon. – Fri., 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. ONLY. At Ward Pound Ridge participants must stop actively hunting by 10 a.m. and must be completely signed out by 11 a.m. In addition, Ward Pound Ridge will be closed to hunting on the following holidays: Monday, Oct. 8; Thursday, Nov. 22; and Friday, Nov. 23. The parks will remain open during the season and informational signs will be posted for hunters and park visitors. A detailed safety program will be in effect. Read the full Westchester County Adaptive Deer Management Program 2012 Guidelines and complete the required application. For more information, call (914) 864-7326. View the Adaptive Deer Management Program Report or the Deer and Forest Regeneration Report.

    Apples or corn

Neither. Get in the woods 50 to 100 yrds from the apples or corn. Find where the deer are bedding in the morning and get there before they leave the apples or corn. Be between the feed and the corn in the morning (or night) and you’ll get them on their way back to the beds. They mostly likely won’t be in the corn or apples prior to dark
  9. crappyice - I agree with you no need to pay the fee when NYC has tons of land available. The fee used to be returned if you shot a doe, but I haven't hunted there in years
  10. I knew the owner and grew up in the area. I had permission to hunt lots of different properties and just went deeper into the woods. Must of the other hunters hunted within 100 yrds of the road. Most of my hunting in now in Dutchess
  11. Outhouse. It was sold a few years back. used to have both sides of hardscabble road. Now its just one side. But there's 3 in North salem and Salengers in Brewster. all within 3 miles of each other. Lots of horse property and a vinyard one can sometimes get permission to hunt. But you really need to start asking in the early summer. During hunting season its usually to late.
  12. yes, I used to hunt the North Salem orchards a lot. Got lots of does and average size bucks (6 and 8's). Missed the biggest deer of my life there when I as 17 (20 years ago) A 21 pointer that ran in front of a truck ( in the field/orchard) right after my arrow missed it. The truck killed it right away. They used to give the fee back if you killed a doe
  13. Try the orchards in North Salem. NYC lands in Westchester / Putnam. Post an add on craiglist asking for permission...But good luck!
