Suvivors: Broken horn scrub buck backs down 8 pointer
Buckstopshere replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Looking at the photos again...that 8 point was no stranger to fights as it's left brow tine and tip of the left beam are both broken. -

Old oak trees. The older, the more acorns. -

Roman...not "roaming" nose. Pulled my first bow-killed buck out of the woods with a Roman-nosed pinto named Sonny. More work getting him through the thick stuff with the buck than it was worth. Bad idea. Never tried it again. -
Suvivors: Broken horn scrub buck backs down 8 pointer

That's why I call them "junkyard bucks." And I think they get more a$$ too. And sometimes dominate breeding hierarchies. But I am from Allegany County. -
Put together a little survivor vid-clip of a broken horn scrub buck backing down an 8 pt. on Tuesday 12.27.16. A 7 pt. came in earlier and didn't want anything to do with 8 pt. as they munched acorns. The scrub buck had the high-ground. No wonder his rack is so broken up with that kind of attitude. Got a couple more today that made it through. I would guess two 2.5 year old eight pointers and a yearling 7 pointer.
-
I put the photos of the wide 6 together into a little vid clip. I like the way he raises his hoof, alert to the cam. The little doe shows his size at the end. I would guess a 3.5 year old for my neck of the woods. Can't wait to seem him as a 4.5 next year if he doesn't get jacked. 4.5's are so rare around here. Wide Six just before Christmas eve.mov

for those who have started hanging your cameras 10-12 ft high
Buckstopshere replied to rob-c's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Knock on wood, but I have not lost a camera to thieves in a few years. I did put them up high, at first but it is a pain to check them, especially as often as I do. Now I hide them at eye level, like in a triple trunk tree, and I lean a log up against the tree on the side and one on the tree to cover the strap, etc. Nothing sticks out like a strap around a tree. -
Yeah, they are correct in those photos. Kind of a pain checking them every time I pull a card to make sure that the time and date are right, but it is really frustrating to have the date and time flip and not catch it and have to put a note on the folder in the computer. Some cameras just have a bug and there seems to be no rime or reason why they flip dates and times (and sometimes am and pm.)

Good luck! I think this time (right after the season) is a critical time to take inventory, before they shed. Once they do, who knows what buck is what...
-
I agree with you, they would be 2.5 year-olds in my neck of the woods...on the Pa. border in Western NY. They both look like they have great potential for next season IMO.
-
Three more made it through too. One wide 8 with short tines, a small 8 and a small six point.
-
The wide six made it through too. I wonder if he will put more points on next season, or will he be a six-point again?
-
Soon they are going to be dropping their antlers. Tis the time to inventory and dream.
-
Ah the stuff dreams are made of...two decent 2.5 year-olds made it through the season somehow...hard-hunted with so many of us after them.
-
I probably should watch those shows. But I did read the complete Sir Arthur Conan Doyle collection of Sherlock Holmes a couple times and did stay at a Holiday Inn.
-
The damage could have been caused by another buck with longer tines, gouging into the back of this buck's neck. It got torn bad and infected, full of flies, maggots eating the dead flesh etc... Only a surface condition for a deer, but they are tough critters. Never cease to amaze me.
-
Probably not the same buck, but striking how similar it appears on two different years.

10 point stud holdover made it through
Buckstopshere replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Looks like he is posing for next year's mount. 10 point holdover buck .mov -
After reading how knowledgeable about scoring the hunters that tagged the buck are, they are not your average hunter. When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Lots of promo out there.
-
After all the junkyard bucks that made it, finally got a good one on cam. Could have been taken in muzzleloader, but I doubt it. Next year this buck should be impressive for my neck of the woods.

Mule kicks mean one of two things, heart shot or there-bouts (like the heart-lung nexus) or a very close near miss under the chest...brisket.

Awesome man, Congrats!

It's like choosing between two beautiful women, a blonde and a brunette. Hell, they are both beautiful to me! Just glad they are on the opposite side of the year from each other so there is no conflict!

I remember calling in a gobbler for my wife. Big tom. She killed it. The whole experience is a very fond memory. What made it great was that the guy who owned the local sporting goods store came striding across the field saying..."didn't you hear me calling?" If you hadn't shot that bird I would have killed him." I just laughed and laughed. He was a decent guy, but what we used to call a big blowhard. I said, "Denny...you just made this a perfect day!"
