Kind of cool, looking back through last fall's archived trail cam shots. Back in November, I got a text from a hunting buddy saying a landowner saw a buck standing in the middle of the road in the sunlight, around 10 am. Obviously, in love. Luckily, I had a trail cam on a zip-tied overhanging branch not far away. So I drove there, pulled the card, and sent a photo of the buck to the landowner. He ID'ed it and said it was the buck...5 point, no brow tines, tips of tines broken from fighting already. That buck hit that scrape no more than 10 minutes after it crossed the road. I never got a photo of the buck before or since. To me it shows as the rut progresses, bucks get the urge to move more and more in the daylight and ...late morning is potentially as good as early morning on the stand when they are on their feet. 11.1.16 Buck at zip-tie Rich saw cross road .mov

Every year, in our neck of the woods, some does come into estrus in September, more in October, the majority in November, some in December, and a few in January, and even February. And since the constant is a 200-day +/- we will see s a few spotted fawns in the following November and December.
-
For my neck of the woods, I would say 3.5, but he could even be older. Some say, look at the legs to body ratio...he has short legs. But deer are a bit like people and some have long legs and some shorter. He is a long-legged buck, hitting his prime IMO.

Bone Yard and Gut Pile Thread 2016

I'd upload more, but this site says I'm over my limit. I have a bunch of rough-legged hawks here on the NY-Pa. border.- 143 replies

Always interesting to see behavior at the zip-tied licking branch, especially when a younger buck shows dominance over an older buck that is licking the branch. In this case, I would guess it is a 1.5 year old and a 2.5 year old...for my neck of the woods. I would have posted the photo/vid of the interaction on this site, but I have maxed out my megabyte upload limit here. But you can see it off site at this link: If it is slow or doesn't work... See the vid on my facebook page. Link below:

I still have some cams out and since I use all rechargeables...NiMH, it doesn't cost me anything, except wear and tear on the camera. Spend a lot more on gas.
-
I can't be 100% sure...but that looks like a bachelor group of shed bucks...and I almost can see some stuff on that lead deer's head...probably just my imagination. And the ones behind...almost can see something on the next one's head. They just look like bucks to me.

Heavy doe - equal time for the gals

This doe isn't really old, but has a scar...probably dodged an arrow...my guess. -

Looks lie a wound to me. Just a bit far back and wrong angle. -
This old gal made it through another season. First time I have her on camera. Talk about "short legs."

Very interesting. Thanks. But I would think that the B&C would consider it important enough...since it is potentially the new, freaking non-typical World Record, to dive into the data. But perhaps, you are probably right. I do not know how rigorous or serious the B&C is. But we are talking two years down the road...and these type of things can grow in scope. Take on a life of their own. I just hope it all reflects positively on deer hunting.
-
You mean, the B&C won't do a DNA test? Heck, people do it to see if their parrots are male or female. Costs about $20...before mark up.
-
Looks to me like one of those farm raised bucks that high fence hunts have. I know that there is a DNA registry for whitetails...I think it is called the North America Deer Registry Inc. Since the buck will not be officially named as the new record non-typical until 2019, it will give the B&C club plenty of time to check the buck's DNA and make sure that its genetics are wild and not...from genetic manipulation, or related to game preserve/high fence bucks. I'm sure the hunt and hunter are above board...just that the animal might be questionable. A high fence doe or buck could have escaped and bred with the local population. I'm sure they will check the DNA out. http://www.wideopenspaces.com/10-uncomfortably-giant-farm-raised-deer/

This shed buck seems to realize that his antlers are gone and it might be the best path to back down from the wide six-point. Learning his limits…shed buck backs down from wide 6 point .mov

Everybody wants to be a movie star
Buckstopshere replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I only saw one antler pop off. It was at the end of muzzleloader season and I was stalking a buck in a cut corn field. Just as I was bearing down, the buck shook its head and threw the antler. It flew about 10 yards. Quite a sight. I decided not to shoot the buck and he would be something the following year. I think my brother-in-law shot him as a 10 point. Hard to be 100% sure. I could not find the antler in the fading light...so I went back the next morning and it took me 2 hours to find it! The temp was about zero...but I made a fire in the woodstove in the cabin. Here is a photo of the antler as I found it...finally! -
Junkyard, roman-nosed buck pesters an 8 pt. until he gets driven off. He will have nasty attitude next year with real antlers. I pity some of the other bucks in the group. He's going to drive them crazy. Junkyard buck wants to be a movie star.mov

Bone Yard and Gut Pile Thread 2016

Have three different rough-legged hawks coming into the buck bones, they are easy to ID because their plummage varies so much from one individual to another and interestingly, a bachelor group of bucks paid their respects too.- 143 replies

A holdover broken-antlered buck with its beams broken down to just about nubs takes on an antlered buck in the acorns. It hasn't learned yet that it doesn't have antlers now...too many fights. Junkyard buck fights an 8 pter. .mov
-
A pair of feisty holdover eight pointers fight for the high ground in the acorns. This bachelor group seems to have a bunch of fighters in it as they are continually locking horns. Their antlers are getting more and more broken up. No wonder they are so hard to find. Two 8's battle for the high ground.mov

Well, I keep track of doe, but more in general terms because they are so hard to positively ID. But through a season, I do ID doe with twin fawns, or one fawn. Or if it has a distinguishing mark like a wound, extra white markings, etc. As to ID-ing deer I tag...Hard to say about the does, probably i have them on camera since I run the cameras in the same locales I hunt for years. But as for antlered bucks in the last 10 years...I have most, not all of them on camera. Sometimes I hunt in areas where I do not put cams and get lucky. But I'm sure, somebody probably has them on camera! Most everyplace I go in town, somebody pulls out their phone and shows me their cam shots.
-
Yeah, I have an Excell rut spreadsheet...and a large external hard drive where I save just about all my cam photos. I have a date and name filing system so I can cross check and use as a resource.
-
I run about a dozen cameras, some old some new. But they are all powered with rechargeables. I could not afford to use disposable batteries...besides being expensive they are bad for the environment. I run all rechargeables...some of my older cams used D's and I still have a few running that use C's but most now are AA's. I have two battery chargers plugged in and rotate my batteries as I do my memory cards. I get hundreds of camera checks out of the rechargeables...some last for years. I wait for them to go on sale at the local drugstores...or get them off Amazon when there is a great deal. So my main cost is gasoline! One thing I have found out is that you need a good battery charger...one that charges slowly. Some of the new ones that come with the batteries charge too quickly and the charges don't last.
