control your scent, you can try scouting i usually will throw up a tree stand if i find a fresh pile of bear skat. Let me tell you what it feels like when your stalking through the woods and you come across a big ass pile of bear skat. Its a very creepy feeling. Not like hunting deer at all. In fact its pretty friggin terrifying and anyone that says different is full of it. If you don't get scared of an animal like that then you sir have some brass tacs. I have been hearing all kinds of stories including multiple ones of guys getting charged by a black bear and shooting them dead in there tracks. While i would never contest a story like that it does make you wonder if they are out for blood or just investigating a smell they picked up on. Regardless i don't think i would take the time to wait and find out. You can try a skreetch call however remember you are making the sound of a dying wounded small animal. If it spots you and connects that sound directly to you then there is a chance its going to think your in fact wounded and at that point it will make a decision weather or not to go into a full charge due to your size and injury or a slow cautious approach due to poor eye sight and plain curiosity. I use a 30-06 in 220 grain or a ballistic silver tip 150g. Make your shots count and remember to practice standing shots at your local range. The last thing you want to worry about when yogi comes out from under a downed tree branch is weather or not you can make the shot but rather what its gonna feel like on your bare feet in the morning when you turn that big bastard into a dagone rug!

yea that's some pretty wild stuff right there lol I couldn't imagine turning around and seeing that! It would be a good time to have a side arm in the woods with you just to play it safe! like a big ooldd d eagle lol

Hey Doc thanks for posting this we just kind of hit the tip of the ice berg with my post. Baiting is def something that should be brought up because I am sure there are a lot of new hunters on this forum that are prob willing to do just about anything to get that first deer. I never resorted to baiting and my hard work paid off when I got my first deer after three years of hunting. I don't believe its necessary. Especially if it helps to transfer disease and actually has a negative effect on the deer population. With technology one day they will prob come out with a product that truly brings every animal in the area to it but thank god that day is not today! Hunting is a privilege and going in and messing with there natural habitat is unimaginable. I have a tremendous respect for the animal and I find it grows each year with knowledge of the species and their habitat. Curious to see what everyone else thinks on the matter thanks again for the post!

I think lawdwaz couldn't have put it any better lolol

very interesting guys I appreciate all the posts. As far as baiting in NY goes I do think it goes against the moral fiber of naturally hunting an animal in its natural habitat. If you introduce something like this to the woods it has to set that natural rhythm of the eco system off. It may not be a lot but think if it was legal guys would prob be doing it as I have seen over the years plenty of guys buying all kinds of crazy contraptions to try and get the big buck on the wall and in the end I believe 90% of its all hype. I have never used bait and I am proud of me hunting ethics. When I shot my first deer it was a gut shot and I wasn't able to recover my harvest. So I drove home and after a night of it burning in my head I got up and my wife even came with me to help me track it in the rain. We drove all the way back upstate and believe it or not we found it! And together we dragged it out of the woods and had a few really nice feasts with some close friends of mine. It pleases me to hear the majority of the guys responding are against baiting. To all the younger guys out there remember we are the future of hunting and are responsible for teaching the next generation how to carry on this wonderful age old tradition! Good luck out there and thanks again.

damn when can I come hunt geese with you guys!! Love the trailer so cool! I am planning on getting out and doing some goose hunting this weekend. Cant wait!

I am sure by now the majority of you have come across the add for the new deer attractant "DIRT BAG"! If you haven't its a molasses based deer attractant that looks and feels just like dirt! They claim the product was designed so other hunters wont find your "SWEET SPOT" out on public hunting grounds. My question to you is how is this product going to effect baiting in NY. If guys start bringing out bags of dirt how exactly would the park rangers know about it? Kinda makes you wonder what the alternative motive for making this product was. I am curious to hear what every ones views are on the moral issues of baiting in NY when it is CLEARLY illegal. Some guys are for it and some are not! Lets hear it!

personally with all the new products that are getting slammed in your face on the hunting shows etc please try and remember this is hunting. Its an outdoor sport. Its an age old natural tradition and I believe we should at least try and keep it that way. You can drag whatever crap you want out into the woods if you don't mind carrying it however when is enough enough!? If hunting deer was easy it wouldn't be cool! I feel you gotta work for anything you respect in life and its the same with deer hunting. Putting in the time and effort and relying more on your natural hunting abilities and working to improve upon them is what hunting is all about. You can buy every gizmo and gadget they sell and run around in the woods with a hat that sprinkles deer urine every 30 min or a terminator 3000 toxic gas emitting deer destroyer hydro electric lazer guided bamby buster for all I care! I prefer to keep it natural. Stick to the basics and for the love of god if your that concerned about getting a deer save the money and spend more time in the woods honing your natural abilities as a hunter. That's what its all about. You learn your weaknesses, and your strengths, and improve upon them every time you get out there. So the next time you start worrying about the ozone do us all a favor and recycle!
