i am not saying it is all bowhunters, i also am not saying it dont happen. i am simply tired of bowhunters thinking they own the woods the first moth of hunting seasons, think of it from the small game guys view. that damn bowhunter is right in the sweetspot for all the squirrels, and yet again i will state i have no problem with sharing the woods with fellow hunters. before you jump the gun and get defensive read what i said and understand this..... i am a hunter of all type, i love this sport and i will continue to enjoy it every chance i get be it by bow, gun, or any other means. you dont see a squirrel hunter go on busting a bowhunter for being in his spot but the bowhunter is always quick to jump down someones throught to make them feel bad for ruining their spot. id also like to say thank you for being understanding when you were put in that situation, its not the people that would act as you did i would be complaining about,,,,, its the ones who hoot hollar and throw a fit.

Hey guys, After seeing a post earlier i have to say this, I am an avid small game hunter, I currently dont have my archery tag as i couldnt get into a course this year(my fault i waited too long). But as i was raised and hunted with my father and grandfather growing up i was taught to respect any and all hunters in the woods. that means if im hunting small game in the early season and i see that there may be other hunters in the woods you pay even more attention and respect their hunting area, i personally have never walked up on another hunter in the woods and try to steer clear of them if i do happen to see them. but the woods are fair game for all of us and we should all be respectful of each individuals pursuit of their choice in game to take at any given time assuming it is in a legal manner. Now to what i read, you die hard archery guys that are complaining about the youth hunt and small game hunters ruining your day in the stand, wake up and remember it is those youths and small game guys and gals that help keep hunting a sport we can all enjoy. Now i also understand not all hunters have the same respect when they see blaze orange in a stand 100 yards away, i personally am not going to pull up to pick off a squirrel if i see an archer in stand. thats just not right, there is alot of game in season this time of year and we all need to be able to respect and enjoy the sport we have to spend so much money on to enjoy. sorry for going on and on but it pisses me off when i hear people talkin bad about the youth hunts and small game hunters "ruining" a day in the archery stand.

if im not mistaken i thought the PA state record mt lion was taken not too far from the NY border near Wilawanna. Now im not saying the DEC is hiding this from us but as was said, how long did they know of the wild bore before they let it be public news. and in this area of NY and all of upstate the habitat is ideal for them, here we have hillsides with some great hiding spaces, plenty of food for them and there only real competition for food is yotes and some black bear. if they are to make a sustainable population our deer herds are going to dwindle even more so than the outbreak of the yote population and they are sneaky bastards. they will flourish in this area with no other predetors to take them out... just my opinion.

Wild Boars in New York
squirrel slayer replied to eagle rider's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
im torn on this, i lived in florida for a few years and down there the wild hog population is insane. they had an open season and no bag limit, but i will admit it was much better eating than store bought pork. the taste was something id never tasted before and not nearly as fatty. id love to see a good group that made them huntable but also have to consider the damage they cause on land they inhabbit. they are destructive and nasty when they get cornered, but they are definatley fun to hunt and better to eat. -
thats an awesome pic. my guess is 70-100 lbs. kinda looks like the camera angle is making it look bigger than it should be but either way still a nice pic.
-
i have been able to move the group some but i just ran out of ammo to move it any closer to bull. im going to get a box or 2 of the 150 gr and see if it helps any. also going to use sand bags instead of a 2x4 bench rest. lets hope this works as i dont want to have wasted this much time and money on a faulty scope.
-
not to be an ass but kinda seems like maybe you just shot a young doe and maybe should have let her pass by til next year. or as someone else said may have been the runt of a litter. hard to tell n dont fully know your position but i think that small this early id have passed on her. who knows tho maybe she had something keeping her from gettin any bulk and you did the local herd a favor by getting her out. congrats on the freezer n some meat tho.
-
last time i was out i had a 5 shot group all about 3 in high and 3 in left of bull at 50-60 yards. but it dont seem to come in any closer if i move the sight at all. just very strange. maybe a faulty scope? ill try the 150 and see what happens.
-
i had though about dropping to a 150 load, and i have never had an issue with flinching before but it could very well be that. i also did not bore sight just kinda looked down barrel and set up a target at 50 yards to get on paper. ill be going to get some shells this week after i get paid and will try 150, 165 and see what happens. also have to get the ol .22 out and let the wife shoot some maybe her steady hand can get it sighted in a lil better than mine. lol. time will tell all i want is meat in the freezer one way or another.

hey guys heres a question, my wife recently got me a new gun, Savage .308, i absoltely love it but i have put 2 boxes of winchester 180 grain shells thrrough it and still havent had a good group on bull. i have a 3x9x40 riflescope on top mounted securley because after a few shots i thought maybe the scope mounts were loose and it was causing a bad pattern, but it was not. is the 180 grain maybe a little too much for my deer hunting needs, should i drop down in load size what are some ideas to get this gun ready before i really need it next month. i do not want to chance going afield with a gun that may not be sighted correctly and make a poor shot and chance anything but a clean kill.

generally your buck to doe ratio should be 2 doe to a single buck, but as i saw stated before these numbers can greatly vary for a number of reasons, if you have a single sq mile of land(640 acres) approx. you have to have the continued food and nutrients for the number of deer you wish to hold. Holding Capacity, this includes not only grasses and natural nuts, fruits, ect but if its your land and you can do so i would make some year round food plots. it will never hurt to more than enough food for the heard you want to keep, just my thought and opinion let me know if you want more info id be glad to help if i was any help to you.

sometimes its like they know when you can and cannot shoot them and do things like this just to tease you. but hey even tho she lived another day its something not many of us will experience and something you can take with you to add to your hunting exp and makes for an awesome story if i may add.

seen more deer within 10 min of peeing at stand than i care to count, actually had one walk out of a brushline within 5 yards of me as i was pissin one time. damn doe scared me so bad i pissed on my gun leaning on the tree next to me and stood there n watched me pee so i couldnt even pick it up to shoot. by the time i got a chance to move n get my gun she was about 25 yards out n back in and out of the brush, no safe shot, no deer, but a hell of a funny story...

Good luck hope he gets a good one to keep him interested. Dont think ill ever forget the feeling i had when i dropped my first deer, to some it was just a doe but i knew it was meat in the freezer and i couldnt eat the horns anyways.lol but made some great jerky

as i have watched this site for a long time now i am finally signed up as a member, i have seen good and bad post. some really good opinions and others well lets say they dont have aclue. ive been hunting since i was 12 yrs old, got my first gun as a bday gift after i passed my hunters ed class and shot my first squirrel opening day of that season. ive been hooked on the sport ever since. although i love a good deer hunt and a nice rack, i cant resist even in the midst of the gun season for deer to take out the ol' .22 and plink a few bushy tails.. as i have recently moved to a new area im still looking for a good bit of land that is accesible to hunt on for all seasons and if there is anyone out tere that has land they may be willing to share in my area it would be greatly appreciated. im hoping to get my wife into the sport by next year and would love to find a good place close to home to hunt. Thank for having me and good luck to all you hunters this year.

Squirrel hunting- 44 days!
squirrel slayer replied to Skillet's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
HUge fan of tree rats.. my gun of choice in the early season is my trusted Remington 870, .410 yes its a shotgun but its a small chamber and does great on the bushytail leaping through leaf covered tree tops... after the leaves fall i switch back to the trusted .22 bolt action with a tasco 3x9 scope. anything in 100 yards should go down.. best of luck.... -
Hey guys, im new here and noticed some great topics. i myself am an avid small game hunter, sadly last year didnt work out so well for me as i recently moved to a new area and dont have the land to hunt on that i grew up around. after a year of chasing and looking i finally think i have found a great piece of property to hunt this year for both big and small game and cant wait. anyone else hunt in 7R in Tioga county that may have a decent treck of land they be willing to share for a fellow outdoorsmen. anyways best of luck to all this year hope you early archers get something but save us gun guys some meat for the freezer.
