  1. Well where I'm stuck hunting for the next few days I have very little chance of seeing anything. 5 acres of woods right behind the house because I don't have anyone to sit with the kids. Older 2 I'm ok with going out and walking the loop or sitting they are old enough to be in the house for a little while but after tomorrow the 3 year old will be there and that's not gonna happen. 2. Is it just me or has the weather so far killed the season. I took the first week off of work so I could be sure to tag out. Today was the first deer I have seen and only saw the dreaded White of the tail as it ran off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Or maybe the Remington model 700 7mm. Still on the fence. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Howa .270 4x16x40 Bushnell and 150 grain deer thugs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Gun of choice. 20 ga Ithaca deer slayer with 24 in barrel was my gun of choice. It was my grandfathers gun. Used it one season. After he passed away it was given to my dad and since has been stolen from his house and never seen again. Now I carry a 30-06 and the wife has a .270. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. All a matter of personal preference. As for myself. I just recently got a 30-06 from a buddy who was hard up for cash. (Lost most of my guns in first divorce) that's for another thread. Lol having previously used a .308 I like the 30-06 way better. It is a heavy rifle but seems as if there is no recoil. My wife hunts with a .270. She loves it. And in her defense it's a nice gun. If only shooting at deer or small game consider a shot gun if you have shorter shooting lanes. A decent slug gun with a shot barrel combo will run you as much as a single rifle and serves dual purpose. Just thought. But now I'm the guy that opened an entire world of more stuff to look at. 7. Well wouldn't this suck if I was that guy ....... I'm in chemung/waverly area 8y. I'd love it if someone here were my bordering landowner so I could finally talk to them tho. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. As I am sure what I am about to say will spark the fire but in my personal situation I can speak on behalf of both parties. I am not one of the fortunate ones to own a ton of land. I rent my home and it happens to be about 5 acres of hi table land not including the house and landlords house or lawns. The neighboring property is owned by someone who lives out of state to my knowledge from landlord. One of the neighbors cuts the trails a time or 2 a year. Posted signs do not have contact info on them. I have a stand set up for my wife that is about 50 yards off the property line. Maybe even less. I even cut a lane to the property line for the fact that she will see any deer coming up the mowed trail/ logging road and where they cross into our land. Last year she had a bad encounter with a guy sitting on the line as she was walking to her stand and he was rather rude and then proceeded to spend the next hour stomping up and down the line just to ruin the entire area for the day. Never once did he ask who she was or where she was hunting just started yelling at her. Now I am aware as to how the open lane may look facing their land however there is no intent on taking a shot at a deer on that land. It's simply to open a field of view so she can see it coming before it gets to the point of no return. Now don't get me wrong I would love to figure out a way to get access to hunt this land even if it means sweat equity and time from me helping out there in off season. I'd love even more to find land to hunt so I didn't have to worry about any of the headache that is sure to come this season but I fear when the Jersey boys make the trip up for the weekend they will hate everything about it. 9. With all today's technology who here is using their smartphone apps to keep a record of their hunting area. What are some good ones that are free? What do they do and are they really helpful. Thank in advance for info Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Kidney stones are a kind of pain you wouldn't wish on an enemy. Lol. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Looking for an 8y have 7r to swap. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Yes on cherry. No on ridge. Just a trail I cut through the woods that deer began using more. Lol. They will be crossing about 50 yards up from what can be seen here. And the trail comes don hill to about 30 yards from stand. Then drops down into some really thick brush that is loaded with rubs. Wife has a stand I made about 200 yards from this spot down in a draw. Think both will produce this year and hope to hear her .270 ring first so she can bag her first deer. 13. Boy and I went out squirrel hunting this morning. Watched a doe walk that trail at 9:30 and there is daily activity. Wind isn't bad there. Stand is Ina decent spot Down a hill. As for water. There is a pond they frequent only about 500 yards away through the woods. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Here's one of the stands I got up today. Noticed a nice bunch of thicket down below that had some nice rubs and a heavy worn trail on the other side is a crossing point and the woods are a little more open than they appear in the pics. Thoughts on stand placement?
  15. Anyone ever hunted at maple hill in chemung. I have been up there a few times personally. Last deer season spent 2 days up there and saw no trace of a deer. But has anyone ever been up there for small game? Or do you have any idea where the deer hide. Years ago I knew the guy who owned the land that bordered and there was always deer on his land.
  16. I am still looking for a 7R or 7S dmp. if anyone has one they are willing to part with and are anywhere near Newark Valley, please let me know. feel free to message me here or by my email, [email protected]. thanks again for any info.
  17. IOtec if you are looking for field testers for anything you are making this is the place to get some. I personally would love to test out some of your stuff, if you have anything you would like some feedback on and would like some promotion in NY let me know. what kinds of products do you have out.
  18. this may not be as sweet of a gun as some mentioned, but i inherited my grandfathers old Stevens Bolt Action .410. It has the brass tube magazine, will hold 7- 2 1/2 in shells, with one in chamber. this thing is in mint condition, no scrathes, nicks, dings rust pitting anything. I thought when i got it i would put it in the cabinet n keep it safe but last year on a clear dry day i took it out and went out looking for some tree rats. wouldnt you know.......... everyone i saw fell to the ground. that old gun still shoots like its brand new. love it and definatley have the feeling he is right beside me when i get back in the woods with that gun.
  19. Hey guys, i recently got rid of an old 16 ga, i have some shells left over from hunting with it and need to find a home for them. dont know if it would be worth it to anyone but i have about half a box(approx 15-20) shells, Slugs, and shot shells. if anyone near me has a 16 ga and would like them let me know. Hate to throw them away when a fellow hunter could use them. im in Newark Valley area just give a hollar if you could use them.
  20. Hey guys, going out monday and just wondering if anyone has been out near Fairfield or Anderson Hill State lands in Newark Valley. i have only been to Fairfield once last year and never been to Anderson HIll. both look like promising land for squirrel but curious if anyone has seen anything at either this year so far. Im taking a guy out with me new to hunting and would like to get a few to keep him interested in the sport. Thanks for any help or info.
  21. I hunt in 7R and 7S and i personall y have not seen any yet. That being said, rumor has it they have been seen in the Cortland area, also near Appalaichin. if they are to get a sustainable population we could be in trouble as a female can have a large ammount of piglets per litter(up to 30) if i read right. and 2-3 litters per year. this is one reason they are worried about them establishing here, if they do they will boom and be hard to erradicate and they are know for demolishing land where they inhabbit. look at florida, they have ruined vast acerage and they dont have a open season and no bag limit on them down there.
  22. i agree with the 1 1/2 on left but the buck on the right looks a bit older to me. id say 3-4 yrs judging by the deep grey around the eyes, also has a very stout body and and form. hes been around a few years if want my opinion. i could very well be wrong about him but either way great pics and best of luck at tagging one this year.
