  1. Solutions for AR...how about limiting the buck bag limit to one buck for the season. You will have more bucks survive to reach 2 1/2+ and the hunters who want to shoot yearlings can and the hunters who put restrictions on themselves can do what they want?
  2. 40-50 depending on the soil. Does your rentee lime the ground he leases?
  3. Tom, good job on those plots! what does an acre fetch these days for cash rent?
  4. Punch, yep mature deer is what I seek these days. If it's mature and has a scrub rack it's on the hit list, if it's mature and has a big rack it's on the hit list. the common denominator is mature! Good luck this season.
  5. steve, not going down the road with you. But saying we are all big antler guys well let me tell you that the last buck I harvested was a 4 1/2 year old 6pt that had no brow tines. I guess that's a big trophy rack deer :
  6. Boy I would love to see the gun season moved later in the year and cut it to two weeks. Does this make me selfish? I don't think so! It's so easy for all the non AR, non QDM and non bowhunters to call us selfish. I think that word is over used
  7. yes, there is always room for improvement. Most people think its up to the DEC to do it all but they can't. we need to look in the miror and do it.
  8. It's very easy do it every year. I have said it in the past and will say it again "there are hunters and there are killers" I got bashed for saying it before, so let's here it.
  9. Nothing wrong with making them yourself but make sure the rope is rated for the proper weight. Western, I think that rope u bought is only rated for 244lbs.
  10. Had my neighbor say to me "man all I see is scrub bucks every year and I whish I could see a decent buck" I replied so you haven't shot a buck in a while? He says, yes I shoot two of those scrub bucks I see every year" I said well how are you going to get those scrub bucks to grow if you shoot them? He had nothing to say I can see how hunters can be against ar and very happy with shooting anything but I have seen it first hand that passing up the 1- 2 1/2 year old bucks will allow the age class to increase.
  11. Still, have 3 sets to hang. Need to load up some cords of wood. Put up more posted signs. Keep shooting my bow but that's about it.
  12. yes, but it's an annual. I would add red clover to it and then cut in the spring when the wr is around 14 inches. That would leave you with a nice stand of clover.
  13. winter rye is cheap and will grow on a rock ;D u'r local co-op should have it for $10 56lb bag.
  14. John, they sure did hit that plot hard. What did you do with it? Maybe top dress it with some winter rye or wheat. Good luck taking out those doe.
  15. John, I'm just trying to help you out. don't get me wrong it's a nice plot but from the pictures it looks to be 90% buckwheat and if you want a plot come hunting season buckwheat isn't it. Buckwheat is a great summer plot to build up your organic matter in your soil. Good luck.
  16. The white seed head you see is buckwheat and alot of it. come the 1st frost that plot is toast. Maybe disc it under and plant wr or ww.
  17. I would say that 50% of my 60 acres of woods is ash I started planting other trees three years ago..looks like I will need to look at my ash trees more often.
  18. Soil test is always the first step. However that seed is Brassica and they do will with N supplied upto 70-90lbs per acre. Urea is 46-0-0 so two 50lb bags will give you 46lbs an acre of N. So apply according to the size of your plot.
  19. Here is some advice on drafting a management plan: Keep it fun, be realistic, what's your goal(deer or timber value or both), need a deer census(trail cams work best), record all harvest(weight, age gender etc.) to help support your plan, what's lacking on your land(cover, hardmast, softmast, footplots, cover, water) short term goals get you to long term, how you plan on hunting the land. this will get you started. remember keep it fun!
  20. sounds like you should check out homebrew cams...just like the one you had from that company. I like my ir4 good price and good pictures.
  21. very nice...I would say mid 160's not older than 4. Did you get germination broadcasting into that cut grass?
  22. John and John, the plots look great! food plotting is going to add another demension to your passion for deer hunting. ONe question, is there buckwheat in the pure attraction mix?
