  1. Opening weekend of bow I saw a little tiny fawn in spots. Saw it maybe a month later run under my tree stand. Then during gun it disappeared. Saw it again on Sunday. Dont think it had grown at all and still had its spots. I swear it was smaller than my old (fat) lab.. Someone had a shot at it, gun to shoulder. It stood broadside 30 yards or so looking at us. He put the gun down and said he couldnt do it. I couldnt either. Much as i wanted a deer this season, I didnt want to take this one. Hopefully it will make the winter.
  2. Y next year first anniversary buy her a gun and/or a bow and take her with you. Good way to get hunting time.
  3. One could guess the hunter wanted the backing of the law, and that is why the call was placed. Good point though.
  4. Oh boy. Didnt mean to post to start a flame war. Y I thought about the slit the throat idea as well but as the version I heard goes, the hunter approached (maybe with that intent??) and the deer got up and ran. So not possible.
  5. So I heard this floating around somewheres. The scenario is just before end of legal shooting, open deer regular season. Hunter sees a deer, takes the legal shot though its getting close to quitting time. Deer takes off into standing corn, seemingly unharmed. Hunter goes and looks for blood. At this point is past legal shooting, getting dark. No blood found. Hunter assumes a miss, heads for home. A ways later, deer runs out of the corn and nearly falls over in front of him some yards away. His deer he shot and hit and its hit bad. Now its laying there, its really getting dark and way past legal shooting. The deer is laying there, not doing well, suffering. Its an easy shot, no chance of hitting anything other than the deer. Take the shot????? Legend continues... Hunter calls DEC explains the scenario. DEC says dont take the shot. What would you do??? Legend continues again.. Hunter approaches deer and it gets up, runs a bit and goes down again. Its hurting but not done yet and is clearly miserable. Hunter somehow gets a bow and quietly and quickly ends the misery. End of urban legend. I kind of like this story and wonder what everyone thinks of it, what others would do different or the same??? It is illegal to shoot the bow after dark so technically this legand the law is broken. I guess alternatively, the hunter could have waited and came back some hours later when the deer finally expired. Seems kind of harsh but would satisfy the law. ??? Comments??
  6. Im hunting 7h and 7j. Plenty of deer. Many many across the street all summer walking and grazing. Just staying away from my area. My land is tough. Houses, antis. Had visits from the DEC both sat and sun opening weekend. I really need a different spot and am looking to buy/rent land. Real hard in my area though. I was thinking though my stand was made and to move. But.. the space is so small nowhere really to move to. Few prints in the snow. They just are not moving my way for some reason. Lucky me my wife got one for the freezer. One more weekend....
  7. I have hunted hard all gun season and bow season for that matter. Had a few shots during bow that I messed up. CHalk it up to new bow, new this, blah blah. OK fine. Gun season... I have seen ZERO deer while on stand. One night at quitting time, I stood up to see a flag up running quite a long ways away. Does that count? I did manage to get a shot, if you call it that, at a doe my wife pushed to me. It was running pretty hard and I missed. Other than this.. I saw a few in the field while driving by. WTF!!!! I got 4 doe tags, my regular tag, wife got the same minus one tag she got. Cant fill anything. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
  8. Cold cold cold!!!! I can feel most of my toes luckily. No shots near me either. Some shots for duck hunters. Im sick of not seeing anything.
  9. Sounds like an ideal day to go pussy footing. Wish I still had the available land to do that. A bit of snow on the ground, strong wind. great recipe for sneaking up on something. I look forward to reading some thanksgiving day stories on here..
  10. Anyone else going out to freeze their private parts off? Im planning it. Hoping to see something in the 18 mile an hour wind. I have yet to see anything gun season. Not good. Its time...
  11. Greetings everyone. Looking forward to posting and reading some good posts here on the forum. I hunt in Cayuga county finger lakes. I am cleaning the rust off my hunting skills after moving out of the area for longer than I should have. I came back to snow geese everywhere, rifles allowed, and anti hunting neighbor(s), and just about nowhere to hunt anymore. (I am looking for land in the area if anyone on here knows any) Last year was my first deer hunt in some time and I managed to knock down a doe that tasted great. I hunt mostly with my trusty Browning BPS 12 gauge. It usually shoots straight, though now and again I think some voodoo curse bends the barrel slightly at the wrong time and nothing falls from the sky. Doesnt happen often. I upgraded from my old Browning bow to a sweeetttt PSE Stinger this fall. WOW. Its like night and day. I had a few shots, deer made me each time. Sucks... Picked up a savage 30-06 and am carrying that these days. Browning sits for bird hunting and days where my scope gets wet. Last year my wife expressed interest in hunting with me!! Got her a nice pink youth PSE and a 20 gauge 11-87 autoloader. We had a spare 308 around and she carried that opening weekend and nailed a doe at about 175 yards. First shot at her first deer. Good stuff.
