  1. Also I did not see any evidence of it bedding down or laying down. I was able to follow blood and for a while tracks. No disturbances in the ground along the way.
  2. I waited actually three hours after thinking about it. Threat of rain, and landowner telling me to get a move on. I could see the deer round the corner and leave anywhere near the shot area. No chance I was spooking it looking for an arrow after 10 mins. None whatsoever. It was gone gone gone. I tend to think shoulder or brisket as well. I'm leaving soon to look again. Nothing from deer search. They must be overwhelmed or out of my area.
  3. Shot at 415, quartering away at about 35 yards. Thought I heard a lung collapse noise when I shot it. Deer went into the corn field briefly but then came back out. My guess is the arrow was in somewhere and the deer did not enjoy walking corn with it. Went to find the arrow and blood after 10 mins. I could see the deer and it rounded the corner of a corn field so I knew it was not laying down close by. Waited about two hours after seeing blood. Tracked over a mile, maybe mile and half. Bled like a stuck pig and I kept expecting to see it dead. No such luck. I'm wondering now I did not hit vitals and it's really a lost cause. I'll look and hope in the morning. I did see some clotting type blood. Seemed like it was trying to close up the wound. It rained hard here 20 or so minutes ago. But it only lasted a few minutes. Hope no more rain..
  4. Made what I thought was a good shot. Found blood, no arrow. Figure arrow stayed with the deer. Great blood trail, followed and followed. Got permission to go out in the dark and track on adjacent land. Followed again, nice blood, very frequent blood. Then... Gone. No more blood. Searched and searched. Went to last known looked like crazy. No more blood to be found. Sucks.... Got a call into deer search. No response yet. Hoping for a miracle. Grrrrrrrrrr
  5. Ahhhh!!!!!!!!!!! Im dying here this last half hour of work. Gotta get to the woods. Forcast looks great for the morning. Maybe Ill get a shot at something finally. Good luck all!
  6. Thanks for the tips! I'll bust out my fillet knife and go at it.
  7. Doing my best here but not sure I am doing things right. I'm trying to make sure I get all the silver skin off but it's a ton of work. Not sure I am removing silver skin correctly. Are there any tips to make it move along? Also.. I am not certain what is silver skin. Some of the images here,I try to capture what I think it is. The first image with my hand is the tenderloin, I think the white strip is silver skin that needs removing? Second image some of the white color skin is silver skin also? Thanks.. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
  8. 7H - Fresh scrape line this past weekend. Monday night it was refreshed. Some rubs showing up. Hunting buddy pushed a doe tues early AM. Few minutes later buck appeared and followed the direction of the doe. He grunted it, no response. No shot on either, due to distance and not really light. Driving home, lower 7h/7j tuesday dark 630ish - Went by a field saw eyes. Put the headlights on and saw at least 7 deer laying in the field. A very good sized buck stood up, very proud, strong. I counted easily 8 points, likely a 10. Within cross bow range from the side of the road. I found it an odd place for all the deer to lay down. Highly exposed. Pre rut? Early rut? Not sure. Looks like its starting though.
  9. Have: 7J Want: 7F Moose: You posted above a while back you wanted to change. Do you have the 7f? If so.. Ill make the trade with you. Anyone??
  10. I went with Parker Thunderhawk. A bit lighter than the wicked ridge and felt more comfortable to me. I carried my hunting buddies for a day or two then went and bought me one. Wicked ridge may be a few dollars less, but it was not right for me. Excalibur looked and felt nice but had a heftier price tag than what I got. Uncocking without shooting into a bag would be a bonus though. I do have the bag to practice on though so not a ton of extra work.
  11. Just finished my vacation/hunt and back in to post on this. So.. wind was screaming sat. morning. Got my decoys out and they were all tangled together. Huge cluster frig up. I managed to separate a few and tossed the rest out as one huge mess. Spread was small and looked questionable. But.. what can you do. Sun was up and things were flying at that point. I had a small spread, I htink 10 decoys about. Lots of guns going off up few miles from me. SOme birds flying. I got my lab in between the wife and I and held her tight and kept telling her heel there, sit, stay. SHe was squirmy. But I kept at it. A few birds flew, but most not even close to my spread. The dog kind of figured I wanted her to stay near me but she didnt like it much. She did get used to the call though and calmed some after a bit. Suddenly I spotted a pair of mergansers floating toward us. WHispered to the wife look left, stay still but ready. They were coming. Got into range and I whispered, take them!! I held the dog, for fear she would break. I think that turned out to be a good idea. Wife stood up, shouldered her 20, ducks flew, BANG BANG. One went down. !! Her first shot at a flying duck and she dropped it. So cool. Then the dog was going nuts and I let her go. She was over excited and really did not see what happened. I pointed and commanded "BACK". SHe started swimming, but did not have eyes on the downed duck. went in circles, tried grabbing a decoy. So I called her back to heel and grabbed a stick. Made a perfect throw to the duck and commanded back again. She swam like a mad dog out there and I thought for a minute she would grab the stick. She did not. Made a nice grab on the duck (merganser) and brought it back. Similar thing happened next duck, only she had eyes on it after I pointed. I think over all an excellent day for two newbie hunteresses. Proud of my puppy and my wife. Pics arent working at the moment. Ill update with pics in an hour or so.
  12. I put my wife in the best spot with her Parker Challenger Youth pink Camo X Bow Sat afternoon. Half hour or so on watch, I get a call. "I got one down".!!! Sweeeeeeet. A tender doe, great for the freezer. She shot at it, was high due to it being almost on top of her. It ran away and she went out to find the bolt. Found the bolt, and noticed either the same deer or another one was watching her. So.. she got out her cocker, pulled it back, dropped in the bolt, raised, aimed.. THWACK. Hit its mark. Something like 15-20 yards.
  13. My wife made some in the oven. She took a frozen chunk of ground spicy venision sausage, thawed it, mixed in some spices, including fresh honey from our bees, then rolling pinned it flat. Paper thin. Stick in oven and let it go. Turns out amazing.
  14. My 12 gauge is only 32 years old. I use it because it shoots great, carries well, and looks nice to boot. Yes its weathered but who cares. Do I need to go drop a pile of cash for a new shiny one? No.

    Vacation?

I have tues as a holiday so took monday. Same thing following week. 2 - 4 day weekends in a row.. Going to hunt hard.
  16. I realize cross bow opens, but I been dying to take my lab puppy duck hunting for a long time now. She is fairly well trained, but still a puppy (8 months). It will be an interesting morning and I hope to get at least some shooting to see how she does. She is pretty squirmy so not sure how that will go over. Good luck out there.
  17. Anyone?? I am thinking somewhat about it, for my wife and her 20. She is quite small and cant fit a 12, so a 20 was perfect for her. Only problem I see is that range is more limited than with 12 for ducks and geese. I dont want her to get discouraged. While I am on this reloading thought, i figured I may explore tungsten option for her. With some effort, I am fairly certain I can get quality tungsten from overseas. At any rate, anyone have info to share on tungsten? thanks.
  18. My wifes Parker X Bow was delivered yesterday afternoon. I am going to shoot it for now. Its a nice little pig sticker and seems great for using while recovering from shoulder surgery. I should be a sight to behold, carrying a pink camo cross bow. I have two 4 day weekends coming up at hunting camp. We are getting close!!!
  19. I am new to rifles. Always carried my 12 and got the job done, but.. times change. I carry my 30-06 mainly during deer season and shoot Federal Fusion 150 grain. My shots are not umpteen million yards away, pretty much 100, or less. Why this? I was new, I saw the box, and bought it. Readily available where I hunt as well, I have never not seen it on the shelf. My gun shoots well with it. I am seriously contemplating changing to a low recoil shot, either purchased or hand reloading though now. Fairly certain these are 125 grains. Why this? Shoulder issues and the way I shoot, no reason to shoot something that strong.
  20. My wife hunts, but does not frequent this site. Welcome.
  21. ...."Keep in mind that the products made in China is like products made any where else in that they are made specifically to the buyers (distributing company) request. It's not like a US company ask China to make the best product possible and then China sends them crap. If so, why the heck is the US company still doing business with China? " This is really not an accurate statement. Unless you have serious measures in place to make sure your specs are adhered to, chances are very high you will get a much inferior product. Also, specs need to be written incredibly well. Why doing business still if you get ripped off? The allure of $$$$$$$$$ . Also not finding out, until its too late, you have an inferior product. Then, after sinking a pile of cash, what will a company do? Say.. Well we got taken, close the doors and take the loss? Doubtful. Recap as much as they can, lick their wounds and move on. Admit in public or press release? No... OP: Its sad to read you dont care where something is made. Maybe one day you will.
  22. My hunting buddy apparently had two deer jump the string this week with his new x bow. He said the same thing, keep it in fairly close. Thunder hawk 160/320. I ordered a pink camo challenger today matter of fact for the Mrs. Literature says its 125-150 adjustable. 275-300 . Ill wind it up to 150 and get 300 out of it, hopefully.
  23. "So news cast from Africa have stated...correct me if I'm wrong...that many of the new cases there have been found in ppl that have been to the funerals of Ebola victoms...now I ask...Were they hugging the corpse...kissing it good bye? I'm thinking not...but family members that cared for them cry..people hug them or they wipe their faces and touch chairs, hold hands...ect...ect I'm thinking easier to contract than one thinks or rather are being told." Wonder if they are family members who lived or were in close contact when the deceased was highly contagious.
  24. I might be dipped also. This is good info. I do have access to a digital scale and could easily dip and weigh, seems like. This is great info from those in the know. " Is is set up with info for dipper / grain info for the different powders " If this is a question for me, I dont know the answer. I see a bit of upgrades in my future. I opened the lee powder thing and did not see a slide in chart that should have been there. Hopefully its there somewhere. There are quite a few primers in there, appear to be in perfect shape. Good idea to use or bad idea to use, given the age?
