  1. NYC not bad. It's been coming down, but slowly. I shoveled at 530 and now the slightest dusting is covering driveway and walk.
  2. Almost time for me to fight the crowd at Penn Station. Snow is coming down, so far its not awful in NYC yet. Went out at 130 and was coming down steady some wind but not horrible. Other areas may be seeing worse I hear. Also not sure the last 2 hours. I am betting its picking up.. Be safe everyone.
  3. Did not test internal temps. Not sure it was on the mix directions but even if so, answer is no, did not. Guess I better have a read on that.
  4. I used a cure from the mix I bought, per instructions. Cooked in the oven according to mix directions. Frozen for A couple of weeks, brought to work and stuck in the fridge for something like 3 days.
  5. OH man. What a sucky story this is. I have a pretty good buddy at work and often times share my bounty with him. I made and gave him a bunch of snack sticks from venison. I ate some from the same batch, he ate one from the same batch a week or so ago. That afternoon I had the hershey squirts. It was either the sticks or something else I had for lunch. Next day I asked him if anything was off with him and he said no not at all. I chalked it up to my lunch that day and not the venison. But.. fast forward to Friday. I gave him 4 sticks Friday and he ate one Sat and half hour later started feeling like he needed to barf. It got worse and said his joints even began to ache. He never did barf, but had the horrible feeling like he was going to most of the weekend. He didnt have anything with large intestine issues though. Lasted about 24 hours then he was fine. He laid in bed most of Sunday. I feel like an ass, though its not clear it was the venison I still feel bad. Does not seem possible that one stick in a batch would be bad and the rest OK. Anyone ever have bad experience with any kind of bad venison?? If so what were your symptoms.
  6. I think I am going to use the shock collar. Last night again she did the same behavior. I could not get the dog in the house after her nightly bathroom time outside. I dont have a long rope, but will be leashing her from now on until I can get one. She is really best described as an "attention lover". She cannot stand not being paid attetnion to. Many times she grabs a shoe or slipper and parades it around in front of me/wife as if to say.. "I have this.. what are you going to do about it?". Its difficult for me to figure how to deal with this. On the one hand she shouldnt be grabbing slippers, but she is not chewing or trying to ruin them. If I tell her drop or bad dog, then it reinforces her desire for attetnion. If I dont say anything, she keeps grabbing. Ill actually like to hear advice on this one. Its not a HUGE deal as mostly I ignore her and she usually lays down with the slipper in her mouth. Now.. one example of the shock collar was posted. Any other ones anyone used and liked, or used and dislike? Thanks..!!
  7. I visit Albany at times, but no I dont live there. A lesson may be a good idea though. I can easily get my dogs attention. When I call her, she either looks or comes to me. I also have tried walking away when she wants attention. She usually follows and tries to play with me. I think I am quite consistent in her commands and training. I will keep trying and use some of the advice here.
  8. I tried the stepping on back toes, tried the gentle knee, turned my back. None of this had any affect on her jumping. When I lift my knee, she puts her paws/legs on either side and play bites my leg. When I turn my back, she jumps on my back. Toes did nothing. She thinks its a game and runs around. As for the not listening, I am showing her tough love and who is boss. Or attempting anyway. I yell at her pretty good and give somewhat gentle whacks on the ass and gentle whack on the snout. She hangs her head in sorrow and it looks obvious at that point who is boss and that something was wrong. She seems to forget this though rather quickly. Other than this, I dont have a good sense of how to show who is boss.
  9. The past few weeks my lab has been acting up pretty good. She is 10 months and has been somewhat of a wild child, but lately she is really bad. I let her out for her bathroom time and often now she does not return when I call her. Last night she ran in circles around me barking and playing. It was freezing out and time for bed as it was late. I kept calling her to me and she would stop and bark. When I appraoched her , she would resume her circle running, ignoring my calls for heel, or come. This is pretty typical situation and went on for some time. She views this as play time, though I am telling her bad dog. She knows she is not supposed to do this but apparently does not care or something. She is quickly talking herself into a shock collar. I dont want to get one, but this behavior is intolerable. Ideas from Lab owners how to correct this? Shock collar the answer??? I should add here that generally speaking she is a pretty good dog. She does jump still and has a huge amount of energy. But really unless she is wound up, she pays attention pretty good.
  10. Hey Sam do me a favor.. Next time you guys do a drive, push them East!!! I am not that far away.
  11. I know Dicks has post Xmas sales that were great, or they have the last few years. As mentioned, my experience was the picked over odd sizes were mostly left. I bought my wife woman/child sized hunting gear at a deep discount, after xmas. Fit her just fine. Dicks is in Utica also isnt it?
  12. pileated woodpecker call for a locator used to work well for me when I hunted turkey heavily. I would hit the owl call a time or two with no response. Then.. bust out that wood pecker call and they would gobble back at it like no tomorrow. I quit carrying the owl as I never did get anything to answer back to it. Not worth the cost based on my results. I also shot all my birds in the field in the spring. I never set up in the woods for them. They can and very well may come in silent. Be on the lookout. Also my final bit of wisdom here. WATCH FOR SKUNKS!!!! Once I setup along a nice well used trail that paralleled a hedgerow. I figured the turkeys used it... Sat down against a tree, all camo'ed out. Nothing could see me. I didnt move for a very long time and all the sudden I heard movement. Didnt even turn my head to look. Instead waited for whatever to come by me. This whatever turned out to be a black and white potentially foul smelling creature. Literally I could have kicked it in the head it was so close to my feet. Luckily it kept walking by me and didnt pay me any heed. After that, I was not sure which of us smelled worse. May have been me...
  13. Keep these ideas coming. I dont know what to do either and time is growing short.
  14. Good job on this. Way to stay with it. I did not know it was illegal for kids to drive. I am not able to find the regulation about this. Anyone have a link to this so I can lookup the particulars? thanks.
  15. I wonder what the failure to comply with lawful order from conservation officer is all about. I wonder if its a BS ticket or has some merit.
  16. Very very nice. Keep these posts coming.
  17. Adding copious amounts of wine to the tag soup may help the matter...
  18. Not me. I am done, though I have many tags left. I have my deer in the freezer as well as my wifes. New game freezer is 3/4 full. OK not 100% but pretty well stocked. Good luck to those going.. Next time to pick up a gun is spring snow geese for me. Maybe late season ducks. With any luck that will happen.
  19. I wish I still had access to land to drive. I cut my teeth on driving as a 10 or so year old. The way my group worked, the young ones were pushers. Non gun carrying (most times). The older members were sitters. Communication was through talking LOUD and screaming, depending on the terrain maybe visual on other pushers. Deer knew you were coming, shooters knew you were coming, neighbors knew you were driving. The point here is get the deer moving, and not to circle back behind you AND let shooters/watchers know where you were. This worked pretty well. Sometimes, I would circle around and come back on my trail, to move any deer that had circled around me. Zig Zag pattern was also mandatory while pushing, depdning on the terrain. Nobody ever said you have to wear orange, as it was common sense and obvious. Through thick shit, at times I held up an orange vest on a stick and wore orange as well and yelled also. Took time walking through that but it worked mostly. I walked up and down some huge steep gulleys that were amazing. Those were the days... The other way is have the drivers walk somewhat quietly, hoping to get a shot. I never drove like this, as being loud seemed much safer to me and seemed to move deer toward those who were designated to shoot. Deer were shooters deer. WHen your turn to shoot came, if you hit one, then it was your deer. The key to driving is knowing the terrain and making the deer go where you want them. Easier said than done, but with some knowledge and planning, its workable.
  20. I would take it without hesitation. After all, I am in the woods to hunt deer for the freezer. A good bunch of years ago there were 2-3 of these around Union Springs. I wonder if genetics are passed along or this is more random. Have not seen or heard of any around that area after that.
  21. Lot of nothing this morning. Cold, snow, wet, no deer. Some shots early on before legal. Some tracks down a ways from my stand. Might not get out of camp driveway today due to snow. Time to shovel I guess..
  22. Many years ago I had a good run of shooting banded geese in the same season. I shot 2 and a hunting partner shot 1. Unfortunately, due to 2 or 3 moves, storage of hunting equipment.. the bands and reports are missing and likely gone forever. I just called with high hopes of getting copies sent to me, but according to whomever answered, they dont store the records by last name, only by band number. I dont have the band number and cant figure how to get a copy sent to me. Hoping someone here may have an idea how to retrieve this info, or have an "in" with someone who deals with this info. ???
  23. Morning for me also, unless the snow is so deep I cant get to camp. I hope not.
  24. This all reminds me of what my grandfather told me about white tail deer. When he was a kid, he once saw a whitetail deer while wandering the woods. It was a big deal and he was pretty excited and ran around telling everyone. He received a response much the same as post #90 above. The population back then was almost non existant (at least in his land area. Cant speak about the rest of the state). People would laugh and think you lacked some common sense if you saw a white tail deer.
  25. Y I thought the ears were rounded on the top, more so than the coyote image on google. Snout looked blockier than the google image I was looking at as well.
