Very interesting. A bit of google search gives the following: ..."EARS Looking at the ears is a key way to distinguish between a wolf and a coyote. Coyote ears are larger in proportion to head size. In fact, a 30 lb. coyote can have ears as big or bigger than an 80 lb. wolf. Also, wolves have rounded ears. Coyote's ears are pointed." They look rounded in the picture to me, though a bit tricky to tell. More: .."The snouts are distinguishing features. While the wolf's snout is blocky, the coyote's snout is pointed." Looks blocky to me. Any plans for further investigation or thats it? Would be interesting to get definitive answer either way.

I was waiting for this thread to go this direction. Surprised it didnt take this turn earlier!!! And yes, pussyfoot is a real word. Describes the method quite well I think. I like pussy footing in the snow. Blood shows up great.

Good advice about wind and backdrop. Will watch these two items. thanks.

Good stuff. I am going to try the pussy foot through standing corn method here Thanksigving morning, as I cant make hunting this weekend. I dont think I have snow where camp is, but Ill give a try anyway. Good hunting to all this weekend.

hmm. I see. thanks for the advice. maybe time to switch deer hunting locations.

Anyone have advice or a place to go or want to mentor an up and coming female bear hunter?? She wants to go, but I have never hunted bears and do not have the knowledge to pass to her. She handles a firearm very well and has shown me she is a good, safe huntress.

I got whatever my wife wanted and others things she didnt know she needed. I put her in the best spot, make sure she is warm, comfy and dont push her to go out in the morning if she does not feel like waking up. She likes the pace she sets, not one I set. I walk with her to stand in the dark, if needed, and dont complain. I gutted her deer, dragged it, etc. She did not need much hand holding, but if she did it would have been time well spent. She now is telling me it would be fun to try bear hunting.. Im researching bear hunting now for next fall...

Fairly good flavor. Did not smoke as I dont own a smoker yet. Last one I had got blown into the water during a mini hurricane/tornado/microburst thing. Smoked a ton of salmon in that thing. I looked at a few but have not pulled the trigger yet on one. Any recommendations?? I also didnt add any pork/beef fat to this. I didnt have any on hand and figured I would try without. Worked out just fine. I did find a local source though that sells pork fat and real sausage casings for next time. The mix was from Bass Pro, where I got the grinder. Anyone thinking about doing this, its not that difficult. Processing deer where I go is about 75.00. We had 3 deer and I figured Id spend cash on a grinder and DIY butcher job instead of the butcher. I took my wifes deer there last year and got almost nothing back. This year I have lots of meat, and options to make my own sausage. Good stuff!!!
-
I am calling this a success!! 3 lbs of meat, stuffed it in the new grinder, mixed, switched plates to the sausage stuffing plate, and that was it. The mix was store bought kind of crappy but got the job done and got me going enough. Dont think I will use again but was good for first run. Good eating everyone!!!

Seems to me a great time to pussy foot. I remember a bunch of years ago now when I first learned of pussy footing for deer. I was the youngster and one day after coming in from stand I was trying to get the old guys going to drive some very large gulleys. They would have none of it but told me it was a great day for pussy footin'. Lots of jokes of that nature came out during hunting season and I put this comment into that category and chuckled. I think it was old dad who finally explained what this was and why this day was great for it. During the night a nice gentle snow fell, something like 4-5 inches, maybe more. Any rate, more than a dusting. It was light fluffy powder and did not crunch or pack down when you walked on it. He explained pussy footing was walking slowly, quietly as possible through bedding areas and looking to jump deer. Since the snow was there and it was the right kind of snow, it would mask any sound of you walking. Also a bit of a breeze in the correct direction would help. I thought he and everyone was nuts and trying to have a laugh at my expense. Surely you cant sneak up on a deer! How the hell would one do that? I figured I couldnt shoot something sitting playing poker so I would walk and walk until I was about froze then come back. They told me what field, what hedge row, what area would be promising. I suited up, grabbed my trusty BPS and took off. I walked more than a few miles that day and on my swing back to camp, I walked along what looked like a very promising area. A thick swail field butting up against a hedgerow and a thin grassy field along the other side. I pussy footed along, thinking about some eggs and bacon when suddenly I found my gun at my shoulder and the trigger being squoze. BOOM. before I really knew what hit me, there was a deer down about 60 yards in front of me. WOO HOO. Pussy footing works!! The deer was apparently sitting along the hedge and I kicked it up. My gun was an extension of my body and worked flawlessly that day. Next thing to do was claim my prize. I marked the area pretty good in my mind and off to camp I went to get help dragging. Hope you all enjoy this fun little story but there is a point to it today. With all the reports I hear of snow all over, this may be a strategy to think about. I am actually thinking of trying to pussy foot through some of the standing corn around. I have never done this through the corn before but I know they are in there hiding.. Any other people on here go pussy footin for deer before? Anyone through the corn??

I am curious if you reported to the police? A crime was committed. Also print the picture and take to one of the houses locally, or the landowner where you hunt. MIght give you some info.

I have not decoyed snows before and am thinking that is the way to go this spring. I have a few fields that I should be able to goose hunt on. One was planted winter wheat two years ago and the snows went into it. This year its corn and I am thinking if it ever gets picked to set up there in the spring. But.. what decoys work, what dont, what to get really without breaking the bank?? What does everyone on here use?
-
How old is she? Is She a youngster or youngish compared to the people at the club? Maybe time for a new club. Wish you/her were closer to where I hunt. My wife could use some female hunter companionship.

Corn is up just about everywhere around where I hunt. A few shots heard but not many. I didnt see a thing. Nothing on my trail cam for 3-4 days before opener. Fun weekend despite not seeing anything. Seems to me every year I hear less and less shooting. Less people out? Less deer?
-
Ill take the one on the left, you take the one on the right.. Seriously the one on the right does seem to have a bigger body. More meat for the freezer. Hope you see either!

Nice! Nothing like those woodies. Never did shoot a duck with a band yet. Shot two canadas though with leg bands a bunch of years ago. The one I recall was 19 years old. I found that amazing. I didnt think they lived anywhere near that long. I have seen a pile of ducks: mallards, some blacks. Just a ways up from me is all. Its private land though so I take what I can get where I can go. The canadas seem to have mostly disappeared by me anyways. Many early on and now I dont see many flying. Some yes, but much less than a month or so ago. Im thinking now sit Sunday morning for ducks. Not sure yet. Hopefully I shoot a monster buck Sat morning. Then I wont feel guilty duck hunting.. good luck to all this weekend. also .. when was it banded? And I need to correct mine. It was banded 19 years before. Not 19 years old.

Last year or maybe two now, the DEC website stated clearly that DEC officers were not allowed to enter POSTED land without consent. This is not internet bullsh$t. It was clearly stated in plain English. It mentioned nothing of probable cause. The paragraph on that site is now gone. It does state clearly that DEC cannot enter posted land to retrieve a deer, if the landowner denies permission to enter. If they cant enter private land to get a deer, why would they be allowed to enter private land just because?

Hunting Cayuga/Owasco, along the shore line. I wish I had a nice swamp to hunt in, but dont. They do fly the shore, but not the last few times. Most times I see them 4-5 miles further down from me. Seems they gotta fly by where I am also. I am actually thinking of sitting for ducks opening morning gun season. Actually, the post above I should add I did see two large flocks of ducks. Flying high and down the middle of the lake. Looked like they were heading for corn and not for a sit along the shore. I kind of dont really count that. I am still getting my setup and dog dialed in. I am not used to hunting over her yet as most ducks I shot were in a swamp setting, or jump shooting the local creeks. A good addendum to this story when I threw the stick out, it was rotten or something and broke in two. I didnt see it break and saw her pick up the stick and keep swimming. She went out and grabbed the other piece and attempted to bring it in. She dropped it and knew she dropped it as next stick throw she swam got the one piece and then swam out of the way and grabbed the other piece. Does that count as a double?? She is getting there... Anyways.. would love to link up with other duck/goose hunters. Where you hunt monkey man?

Went out two mornings the last week and didnt get a shot. Nothing but seagulls and an occassional crow flying by. A pair came roaring by with the wind at their backs, but out of range. My lab kept looking at the seagulls in the sky and I told her I was trying, we couldnt shoot those. If she could talk, I have a feeling she would have said "Shoot the damn things.." My lab is doing fairly well, but she is like a child. She was ok at first, all excited but then she started squriming around, eating sticks. She got bored as I didnt shoot anything. Threw a stick for her when I picked up the decoys and she was happy. I am thinking of building a blind so she can have a spot to futz around in. That should work.

Very nice.. Im excited to take my lab out for snows this spring. BTW - you ever need someone with a retriever to help go fetch dead geese.. I make it out Albany way sometimes. Would love to link up....

Just busted out my vacuum bagger and tried to seal up my venison cuts. I used this quite a bit for smoked salmon and it worked great, no air remained, no leaks later. But it seems to not have gotten out some amount of air, on just about every bag. Not sure this is ok or not really. Does not seem so good? Kind of hard to see but there are air pockets.

Picked up nice Savage for the wife

Thanks for the tips. I'll get another box, maybe winchester. The Savage person thought this gun MAY be better using them. Hopefully. Looking forward to Saturday opener. Shoot well everyone. -
Picked up nice Savage for the wife
Al Bundy replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Good to see humor around. Helps get me through the day. I called Savage and they said a 4in group at less than 100yards was not good. They also suggested different ammo and said there was a simple procedure for adjusting the trigger but for liability reasons could not tell it to me. Ill be googling that here soon. I was shooting Hornady 139grain through it. That was all I could find on the shelf when I bought the rounds. Ill look for something different and see. Cant do anything different though for the opener on Sat. -
Picked up nice Savage for the wife
Al Bundy replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
A follow up to this. We shot this a few times, sighted in OK. i wasnt able to shoot so good, but its a small stock and I chalked it up to that. My huinting buddy also same thing. We sighted best as possible. I also noticed the trigger SUCKS. OK not accu trigger, but I thought it should be a reasonable average trigger. Its not. You have to put some serious effort into squeezing it. Things finally lined up to get the gun sighted with a bench, clamp device ( I dont know what its called), stable platform, the works. My hunting buddy has all that (and the skills) and we got time this past weekend to sight it in without mistake. Unable to get it better than a 4in group at 100 yards. Very disappointing. My 30-06 shot on the same setup was excellent. It needed a slight tweak and was ready to go. Im going to try and call Savage to see if anything can be done. Not real happy. Anyone have any advice on how to get out of this mess, Im all ears. -
This story does not end well. Searched all land I was legally able to. Looked and looked for more blood. Did circles, did a grid type search, and walked forever. No luck. Deer search got back to me and didn't want to try. Not a good day today.
