LOL.. all I said is that some would not get it. It was not meant to offend anyone... just make the point that I made in the last post which is that those that don't understand are probably the hunters with those thoughts in their head. If it hit too close to home I'm sorry... it wasn't intended specifically for you.
-
The idea of "challenge" is subjective... I personally don't think a compound bow is a challenge... so it is hard to draw the line if "challenge" is the benchmark. The idea of a relatively silent kill, I believe, is a better benchmark for determining the difference between the gun and bow season... the crossbow falls into that category... it certainly doesn't disrupt the whole deer woods like a gun does... regardless of it's efficiency compared to other bows.
-
That was the point.. hunter vs hunter is all about some not getting it. The only thing that made both those stories anything but just two hunters enjoying hunting was one persons thought process upon meeting up with the other. If you didn't get it, you're probably that person.
-
Two hunters were hunting a piece of land for a week with knowing the other was there. On the last day of the week they meet up on the way out of the woods. One hunter thinks the other is infringing on his archery season. Two minutes ago neither new the other was there. The same thing happens the following week except they meet up at the end of the week, each dragging a deer. One hunter thinks "That guy took the easy way and didn't put in the practice time I did to get my buck". Two minutes before it was just two guys dragging out their deer. I'm sure some of you won't get the point...

Why... (sorry my question mark button isn't working)

Yep he's doing fine.. just busy. I've been seeing him on facebook.

I honestly can't remember any Putnam Co. buck ever making the book... or seeing a pic of a slammer from Putnam. I know nothing about the county so I don't know why that is.
-
I think some of the guys try to measure their own and really dont know what or how to measure. Had one guy that was measuring the tip to tip of the beam measurement and adding it to the score... I gave up trying to tell hunters not to post a score unless its offficial... they just open themselves up to scrutiny. Usually when I think there is a huge discrepancy with the score I leave it out of the post.. it saves everyone from the barrage of nay-sayers.

More and more good bucks coming in from Ulster and Greene Counties than ever before... I believe they are in the AR area. WNY seems to be the hot spot however
-
Yeah.. I post 'em just as they send them to me... not many come in with scores any more. Are you a measurer..
-
Never heard of it... sounds cool though.

I don't think anyone said it doesn't change with the warmer weather... just that it still happens in spite of everything. Just because it doesn't happen when we want it to doesn't mean it still doesn't happen. I would say it's more that hunters think the weather is stopping the rut... when actually it could prolong it.
-
Probably not mid day... the rut is not in full swing so most of the movement will be in the cooler early mornings before the sun gets higher in the sky...then maybe as it cools down just before last light. Bucks will be doing what the does do... and the does will not like moving around in the warmer parts of the day. But at night the pre rut activity still goes on. I'll be in the woods anyway during the day.. can't kill 'em at work or from the couch.
-
Maybe get the adjoining hunting club to help out so that you are both absolutely on the same page as to where the boundries are... maybe share the surveying cost.. worth a shot before going at it alone. Might be a better idea than just surprising them with a gangland of new posted signs. Just a thought.
-
Hey Moog did you use the trad bow on him
-
you're so right...I think some hunters tend to forget that the rutting process is an innate urge that the bucks can't control. Very warm weather can lessen the intensity, but it still will go on.

Handsome buck Moog! Great bow buck.

You're right Pygmy... I wasn't aware that rattlesnakes were live bearers. My point is still the same, but I learned something today! -

Yup you're probably right about the rattlesnake in this area... other indigenous rodent eaters take their place in NY. The difference between our treatment of rodents and insects vs. other animals and why one is more detrimental than others is more about the ability of rodents and insects to repopulate at a much greater rate. Rodents reproduce continuously throughout the year having multiple "litters" with up to a dozen per litter... Insects reproduce by the 100's, even thousands per year, per each hatching. Snakes reproduce once per year... and because they are not live born, but begin as eggs they are subject to much higher mortality rates. The number of bugs humans kill and other insects and animals eat can't put a dent in the bug population. The same could not be said for the snake populations if they were killed at the same rate as insects. One critter is not any less or any more important than another in the animal kingdom... mother nature somehow creates the perfect balance in each habitat... man is the only disruption in that balance if not kept in check. -

But then we'd be overrun with rodents... those pesky mice! I think snakes are extremely interesting... saw my first rattler in PA over the summer... I was actually excited.. stopped the car and ran up to it to get a pic before it got into the woods. -
I have been lucky to have responsible neighbors... I certainly understand that some neighbors aren't... I was just curious is all.
-
Just curious why you didn't let your neighbor hunt your land, then ask him for the same courtesy to use his land... and start a mutual hunting friendship that would have eliminated all this. I have done that with every neighbor I have had that hunted and it always worked out better. It gave us a chance to talk about a set of rules that kept everything working smoothly on both properties... we would help each other with cutting trails and setting stands... we even hunted together a few times a year.

Most is lost in the spread... usually not more than an inch or so lost from the green score...
