permanent ladder stands on public property?
CuseHunter replied to Fingerlakesman's topic in Deer Hunting
Well many people here believe that hunting from another persons stand on public land is not right. I understand this argument, I personally know of a few stand left on public land that is NOT allowed to use stands left over night. I don't use them, because I like hunting from the ground. I do not think it is wrong though to use another persons stand they set up on public land. You are not stealing it. They do not own the land it is on, and I know if I left a stand on state land, I would understand if someone used mine when I wasn't there. I don't mind when someone uses a ground blind I made from deadfall, it did tick me off once when I went there and there was cigar wrappers and trash though. -

I did lots of research before buying and every single model 70 I found was well over $400... If I replace the stock and buy a floor plate adaptor, it will increase the value I believe. -

Yeah I love my trigger and don't want to touch it. But the stock is a tight fit to the barrel. I'll be shooting a 3 round group, if it shoots under 1" at 100yards then I won't touch it. If it doesn't, I'll float the barrel, and see if that helps. One thing after lots and lots of reading, I found out what what model it is... And it isn't a good find for me. Winchester made in the early 2000s ?(2001-2003)? An affordable version of the model 70, with a synthetic stock and a "blind magazine" aka no floor plate. This is what mine is, so I actually didn't really even get a deal at all, if not kind of was ripped off. BUT I'll eat it this time, and hope it still shoots good. The stock is the only downfall I can see in this "bargain" model 70, as it seems this is where they cut costs. I wish the owner was more upfront with me, I asked what version of the model 70 it was, and he said he didn't know, when I got there after driving 2.5 hours, I was going to buy the damn thing no matter what for that price. Just a reminder to those who buy used, research, research, and when you think you are done, research some more. -

Just got home from the 4.5 hour drive round trip with the new model 70 .300 win mag. It was super clean for a used gun, not one ding or scratch on the stock. Bolt and action showed no wear. He said it was only shot 4 times, and I believe it. Gave me a box for ammo (16 left). Looking forward to doing some DIY modifications to it. Possibly upgrade the stock or try to glass bed the one I have and free float the barrel. Plus the trigger breaks like glass, nice and light too. The trigger is what really sold me on it. -
Ahhhh I get it

I know I'm getting my friends into hunting, with all these shows on tv like duck dynasty everyone wants to be a Robertson. Yet most don't know how to skin a squirrel or have anyone in their lives to show them how. I had to teach myself a lot, but if it were not for my friend and his dad to show me the ropes and let me hunt with them on their property, I would be nowhere in hunting.

No more Ammo sales to NY

NYC needs to become a sovereign land. Those POS politicians can stay in the yuppie land and leave us alone -

As of right now, I'm meeting a guy Monday to buy his .300win mag model 70 for $400. I couldn't pass the deal up. It is in mind condition, he never used it. Says only shot it about 8 times. -

I'm not saying I'm bringing back a military issued rifle. That's a big no-no. I'm saying I might buy a AR at the local store while there. -
Anyone have advice on what I should run through before buying it though?

I'm meeting the guy in Sharon springs, it will be a decent drive for me but by Friday morning I'll be the proud owner of a 30/30 can't wait

Looks like I'll be shelling out the cash this week for it

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone. Since I'm not in a rush to buy, I'll keep looking online around for used deals. I plan on definitely getting a good mount and glass (vortex viper) and still am sticking with a .300 win/wby because of ammo prices, and I personally would rather have a caliber I can use here in NY on a whitetail if I'd like to, and not just only at the range or on these big game hunts. If I went with a .338 I'd imagine it sitting in the gun safe collecting dust and only being used a handful of times throughout my life. -

exactly why I am going for a .300. I'm still 20 years old and in college and I bust my hump just to make ends meet with tuition and all my "extras" in life. I'm also plenty aware that with a budget of $1000 I'm not going to get a rifle that can compete at the level of 1000yd competition shooters. I just want a rifle that I know (with the skill) I can shoot a good group from 400 yards max. -
great post here. Makes me appreciate the true "wild" aspects of hunting and this to me is the true "trophy hunting" it's alluring to me personally by seeking a naturally wild buck, unaltered by humans (crops fields/ baiting). Definitely another way to look at trophy hunting as a whole.

This is a pretty far out there question... I don't know if there is any type of club or organization in NY that are "survival experts" but it's something that interests me. Do any of you know of a place I can go to do this? I've contacted a local military recruiter to talk about going active duty for the special forces in the air force (I'm currently in the Army reserves) unfortunately my eyesight isn't near 20/20 and I'd have to pay for eye surgery to get it fixed so I could join SF. Any assistance would be helpful.

I got an offer to buy a marlin model 336, 30-30 made in 1976, with scope rail, sling, and case for $300. You think it's a good buy? A new one is around 450

I'd be more confident with a .300 win mag to take an elk or moose. My Venture does not like shooting over 160gr. It's awesome at 150/155gr (sub MOA) but when I got a box of 165 Remington's and 180 fusions they got worse and worse as I increased the gr. Plus I don't plan on getting a smaller caliber than a .308 anytime soon, not until I go to Texas for the Army again and then I just might grab a AR while I'm there. -

I've decided to go with a better rifle then the savage. It's looking like a vortex viper glass, and tikka T3 in .300win. Nothing's written in stone, I want to go to some local stores and feel them out. -

savage models that are the TP hunter (?sp) have the accu-trigger. -

Looked into the savage 111, from what I've read it's a good value. I am leaning towards a tikka t3 though. No rush to buy and I'm putting out the message I have cash and looking to buy used .300 win mag. Let's see if I have any people call me up. -
So I've been working some extra double shifts these past couple weeks at PF Chang's finally have saved up enough cash to be looking for another rifle. I really want to get a large caliber (.300WSM or .300WIN). I plan on using it for deer, elk, and moose hunting. I own a TC Venture in .308 and like the accuracy for the price paid. I would like to get a different brand this time around and have roughly $1,000 to spend. Obviously, if i can spend $750 it would be nice but my max for a box of ammo, gun, rings, and scope is $1,000. (I'd prefer to go with a SS barrel due to weather corrosion resistance) Lets hear you recommendations. So far with reading, I like the Weatherby Vanguard series 2 runners up being- Browning AB3, Tikka T3, Ruger American

I decided to take a couple online winter classes over my break between semester and one class I am taking is Ethics. So far I love it and enjoy diving into the text readings. Throughout all of our discussions on these forums we all have human prejudice which I've noted in all of these heated arguments. I'm sure none of you care about this, but I needed to take a break from reading and wanted to post on here anyway If you were wondering, the book is "The Elements of Moral Philosophy" by James Rachels. It's short (195 pages) and very well written in an easy to understand manner.

Mendon or Rush property
CuseHunter replied to aasapper21's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
there's probably a reason they do so (no hunting). But it's worth a try. I always say, you have nothing to lose asking. Worse thing they can say is no.
