Have 2oo acres in Sullivan county. Two square 100 acre parcels. If you post it, don't hold us liable for any accidents, you can have at it w/ coyotes (but spare foxes/bobcats etc). If you trap beaver, will ask for 1 tanned pelt out of 3

Albacore Tuna fishing, just shy of 200 in one day!
thunnus replied to Gilliland440's topic in Fishing
Albachores! Funny makos school w/ them half way around the world. Of the half-dozen makos of hooked while trolling for tuna it has always been a monks the schools of albacore -
Yeah in stand in eastern Long Island the weekend before last. Two sets: one of spikes and forks (three of them and one that may have dropped it's rack) and a pair of larger antlered bucks well out of bow range

For those that enjoy cooking game If we didn't devour it I'd have pics. Sous-vide or oil poached. An amazing way to make a tender roast out of secondary cuts like the thigh/hock. Used to work in finance and banks would treat us to meals I never would have dreamt of as a kid. The big thing for a while was oil poached cod: cod-a scavenger, w/ a fair number of "harmless" spiraled parasites (every fish shop has a candling table to pick them out of fillets) has to be cooked through. They started to slowly poach them in oil. Got a young buck last week, butchering it and packing it in a vacume bags on Monday. I usually split the thigh into three major muscles and one tubular one to make prosciutto and bresaola. It is my third deer this year so bought food sealer to freeze some. Sliced center of muscle, so uniform thickness of 2.5-3". Dusted w: salt pepper brown sugar and fresh thyme and rosemary. Then covered w: a better "finishing" olive oil. Rolled it back together and placed it in a vacume seal bag. Idea is to cook long and slow. Moisture has nowhere to go from bag and cooks at a uniform heat. In a large asparagus pot brought it to a slow boil under a low light. Came to a boil in ~15 minutes. Checked on it ~every 15 minutes by lifting cage of asparagus pot. After an hour made the mistake of lifting by bag and the side seal started to go. I let it rest for 10 minutes. In bag. In an iron skillet, seared edges super quick and smokey w/ tongs (not a fan of using torch) Cut muscle cross grain, one of the most tender venison preps I've ever enjoyed. A young lamb texture and a taste across between veal and beef. Next time will take photos.

Perhaps a little late. Next time you go, be sure to use dropped birds as decoys.

My shot was a responsible one (quartering away, close range) the result of the shot made me ask a hunting buddy to take my bow away for the balance of the season. It was a marginal shot w/ a fantastic result that i attribute to the sharpened broadhead tearing things up inside. Shot dead-on after. A left handed shooter, I fear that the puffy winter jacket I was wearing in the stand, coupled w/ the excitement of drawing on third day had string slap arm and change arrow trajectory to the right. Through the lower back tore up femoral artery on far side (never a shot I'd wish to repeat). Arrow snapped and burrowed deeper into deer ( 3 inches at minimum), not a drop of blood greater than 15' feet from where we found'em

At the most basic level I find it hard to argue for less cutting area inside an animal.

It works, wrote a long story and lost it on tapatalk. Made a poorly placed shot -that I was sincerely ashamed of - lethal. Native Americans knew what they were doing - their lives depended on it. Next quest is to tip the arrows w/ something that prevents deer from running far that we can ingest.

Thanks fortunately or not, I'm a 'lil short' 5'5" ex college wrestler, used to be able to fit into youth hunting gear and save a ton. Got shot and basically crippled by some nimrod 5' away w/ a 20guage-not being able to exercise I've gained a bit of weight. Needless to say, carry gear into the field and a deer out is a triumph of the will but a circumstance of pain I'll willingly endure. -

Separately and aside from costs of purchasing a 870 barrel in 20 gauge, thickness of barrel doesn't seem to be an issue as Remington itself sells shotgun slugs for it's smoothbore scatter guns -

Thank you guys for your responses This whole idea is predicated on 20 gauge rifled barrels being way too expensive vs 12's even at cabela's Trust me have done homework in pricing, looking for a gunsmith or expertise. 279.99 w/out scope in 20 259 w/ scope in 12 at cabelas /Gauge20 ModelFully Rifled FinishSpecial Purpose Barrel Length (in.)18-1/2" Cantilever BoreFull Rifle Manufacture Model Number27595 In Stock $279.99 Caliber/Gauge12 ModelFully Rifled FinishSpecial Purpose Barrel Length (in.)23" Cantilever, Scoped BoreFull Rifle Manufacture Model Number24553 Backorderable $279.99 Sale! $259.99 -
Two ideas: Looking for a gunsmith: need a slug gun: 1)for a rifled barrel for my old 870 youth looking at $200-thought it would make sense to have a gunsmith rifle existing barrel instead. Or 2) always dreamt of a double gun (breaking a gun open, unloading/loading for safety/silence/convenience can spoil a man). Can find side by sides relatively cheap, get one in 12 or 16 rifled and I'll be all set. Anyone have any input/experience/know how or could suggest a gunsmith?

(From a similar post on this site) Like the flip up seat and mirror ideas. How bout a bar that Locks in for seat you can hide nearby so it's tuff for others to use your stand? Heated hand rail: won't go codfishing w/ out one Textured/pointy stand/foot rest. Nothing worse than sliding up there: my climber is the worst, freezing rain-slip sliding away A solar panel, acts as tent to charge a motorcycle small battery to charge phone and heat handrail A waterproof or insulated canister to hold lunch scentless warm or cold Hanging hooks on outside for gun/bow hauling line, rattling antlers etc. A pee funnel w/ air trap, burry a tube into ground. Hidden trailcam mount Cell phone/wifi booster antenna Arms for camera mounts
