  1. Retail is in the mid $300, but many places sell in the 2's.
  2. I have a few 2012 Code Blacks and toying around with my first 2013 Code Black after finally getting a down moment in the past week or so. I won't post pics, etc. until I hang it for a while. But, the 2013 comes with SMS functions. I can text commands to the cam in the field to change the email or phone numbers that receive the images. Also tested the function that asks the cam to snap a pic and send it to me. Pretty neat. I see that as a good feature if I don't get a pic for a while and want to see if cam is still powering. Haven't messed with the location request yet, but I will be able to request the location of the cam with a similar code. I have heard some people say the SMS function eats up batteries more, but the official word is that if it is not used, it doesn't. I'll tinker around with it and report back as needed on it.
  3. I've been in Wayne County this week and see leaves changing off 104 during my commute. About 1/2 mile west of Spencer speedway there are a few trees that are half-way changed over. Stands out like a sore thumb against the green trees, but no doubt I start at those 15-30 changing trees with anticipation. I'll snap a pic today on way home.
  4. I've set and hunted ladders in thd same day and killed deer. Its just knowing what you can get away with. Might as well set now than never.
  5. Same with pigs...and I think we'll be dealing with pigs on a macro scale much sooner than big cats. Pigs are the bane of many deer hunters in the south and midwest.
  6. That's why we keep it quiet. So, people don't think we're crazy, lol. Who knows, maybe another transient made its way across. Entirely plausible. I'm just waiting for the "they're here and breeding" posts. That's where the popcorn needs to come out.
  7. You're thinking of jaguar in the SW case...Mexico has a small population and used to be a great ground for them, as was the SW. It's akin to the rogue cougar that came from the MW and traveled all the way east to the coast.
  8. I believe this is true without a doubt.
  9. There's so much "theory" and "opinion" on this that I don't think there's much hard and fast information to live by. It's a "what works for you." scenario. I don't start scrapes early on, but will start them if I see a lot of scrape activity. i prefer to use dirt from scrapes at other properties. I will also pee in active scrapes if the urge hits. I have way too much "proof" for me that it not only isn't detrimental, but that it appears by pics to have hits. I know some people start them early on...some buy kits, some cut overhanging licking branches, clear dirt with a stick and then attach them to a branch witha zip tie. Now, I know of a few people who write a bit that preach the basics of just creating mock scrapes siply by making sure the overhead licking branch sticks out like a sore thumb...no dirt clearing, etc. Just that facilitation of a branch can get a scrape started. I'll be honest in saying the last few years, I haven't done much with mocks, other than peeing in them if I happen by in-season or a last second scouting mission. If you need an inventory, use an existing primary/community scrape...and just throw down dirt from another scrape.
  10. I think this has been the longest we went without a cougar thread? Awesome. Deer season can't get here soon enough.
  11. I've pulled in some bucks, a couple mature ones, but the rate of success for me is pretty low with it. I'm not much a blind caller any longer unless the conditions and timing are right or I feel like I'm on my last straw. I agree that we probably pull in more bucks than we see and they pick up on the danger somehow with us never to find out. I am amazed however, at how effective it can be in the right enviornment. In Ohio, I've rattled/grunted in several bucks, and witnessed a few be killed via a rattle/grunt sequence over decoys. Lower hunter density there, but wow, does it ever work in the areas I hunt there.
  12. Camo corn...lol dyed to be less noticeable.
  13. Oh I had/have a plethora of submissions. I'm iust picky and always open to helping those I may know and or via networking. Our company is never short of applications. We had more than 200 submissions and found a top caliber intern. Thats over with and may consider another.
  14. Not me...but sounds awfully nice.
  15. TO me it sounds more like a way to stop them for a shot rather than bring them in...i agree, not something I would go out of my way to do.
  16. Glassing is an under-used technique here. But, some of it is due to the lay of the land. I'd say less than half of my ground is easily glassable. The ones that are, I certainly do it.
  17. I didn't say anything mean - just trying to steer him back to reality so to speak.
  18. We had kids like that often, but it was from hay work during the summer on the farms.
  19. My dog has learned to spin the collar. Dog is dumber than a box of rocks sometimes, but smart when he wants to be. When he spins the collar the contacts don't set off, and we bought a pretty high end unit.
  20. Rowing machine... There are a few bow-specific exercise bands. I have one and forget who made on AT. But, I really liked it. I wish I could find where it was last.
  21. I don't even want to get into how much I dislike this tool. Its great, but I hate it.
  22. That's a special case...some people believe a parcel up for sale isn't the place to have a hunter on, because it can introduce risk, prevent a sale, or a mishap, etc. The other is she's fearful of litigation. Remind her NY allows those who give permission to be protected; however, there's always a "risk" and that sounds like what she is stating. There's two approaches really - the calculated approach and the spaghetti on the wall approach. I find spaghetti to be a better tactic in most cases, unless I see something special, such as a certain buck, or the lay of the land/proximity, etc. Sort of like the guy who got the most action with the ladies. Usually it's not the best looking guy...it's often the one who simply asks the most and/or best and is not afraid of rejection. It's really a numbers game. The more you knock/email/call/etc., eventually you will get some decent ground. On the other hand, if something stands out, you make a concerted effort, striking up a conversation.
  23. How has nobody typed the three most famous letters in such situations yet? HuntingNY forum FAIL.
  24. I think some people just type stuff without thinking. Letters and phone calls CAN work and work well. So can face to face...what you need to know is "communicating to your audience," and combine that with your approach. To generalize an approach as don't work or seldom does, just seems asinine. All of these avenues are going to have high failure rates, but getting one or two YES responses mean it works well imo. I have permissions from all three avenues (assuming email/letters the same) at the moment.
