Stagger the planting. I surprised more people don't do this when they can. They go one weekend to work on the plot and then at the parcel again the next weekend to hang a stand, etc. It takes five minutes to seed a small-ish plot.
-
Probably pecking at bugs in the bare ground spots.
-
I don't bother locking them. Almost every stand and cam I've had stolen has been locked. The ones that are not have a much higher rate of staying where they are for some reason. Spending money on locks just means you are out more money after they cut them.
-
It was the very first plot I ever planted and it's a good value for the seed. It was the best buck on a bag option for late season plantings before brassicas really became a favorite to plot. I do believe the mix has changed slightly. I'd have that stuff in the ground asap, however. Time is a bit short on that respect.

Mint? Holy heck, I haven't heard that word used in the context you are talking about since high school in the 90s. "Dude, we're not beat, we're mint." was our motto I think...and that's wNY. At least he sold off that dyno queen a few years back. That thing would be out of style amongst all the trucks and the like where he's moving now. Nothing like getting old, Geno. It's a nice area, although not much for city-experiences when the desire arises for you and the wife. Rochester is probably the closest "city" city with cultural attractions of any sort. There is a good pizza shop in Corning and the family is from NYC area originally. I forget the name, but you'll find it quick down there.

Ah, OK. Was curious as we planted our lone radish/turnip plot around the 9th or so and growth was pretty far behind yours. Of course, we had one rain shortly after and then a dry spell here. Finally got the rain we needed yesterday and they'll take off most likely.
-
I agree on the breasting out...I don't know how people eat the rest of that bird. Yuck.
-
Phew...that's a move. Good luck with it and the venture.
-
When did you plant those Grow?
-
I'm so relieved its raining... the lone plot we worked on this summer really needed it. I think it'll take off nicely. Man, you guys are planting some expensive seed. WI is nice, but wow, talk about a premium!

Actually, not bad from an inventory perspective. Instead of setting a few cams on various parcels for the summer inventory, I focused most cams on two or three smaller parcels as they were relatively "new to us" hunting-wise. I knew that would result in fewer targets on cam, but I am getting confident in my post-season scouting and any glassing I do to the point I don't need cams to give the intel I generally know/need. Still, they do provide value in many contexts and I enjoy using them immensely. I'll return to the typical spread of cams on more parcels next summer. There's also a few notable typical 8 pt bucks missing I have pics of, but I can't remember what SD card they were on and I'm not searching through them again, ha. Lots and lots of 2.5 year olds this summer, as well as the usually laundry list of 1.5s (fall speaking). Interesting note, the bottom two pics are stills from vids in an old food plot that was planted in annuals two seasons ago and hasn't been touched since. Some re-seeding must have went on, because those bucks are eating what appear to be forage types that I planted.

Please take this with a grain of salt, but that cam may be the worst cam Moultrie ever made. It got hammered in reviews.

While I am sold on Covert's 2012 and 2013 models after owning more than 100 cams in my time, I'm no fool when it comes to dollars and sense (pun intended). http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Hunting/Trail-Cameras%7C/pc/105591780/c/105649380/sc/105668280/Spypointreg-2-N-1-Surveillance-Camera/1570484.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ftrail-cameras%2F_%2FN-1104720%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105668280%3Fsadid%3D44700000474936030%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105649380&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105649380%3Bcat105668280 For someone who wants to "try" black flash, this is the perfect entry level cam at this price point. It's not going to be the best photo/video quality, but it'll be usable and "good but not great," if that makes sense. The flash is invisible, plus you get the white flash, too, if you want to use that (I'd toss it...). It takes 6 AAs and will give you some decent battery life on quality alkalines and lithiums. The camera is pretty well made and Spypoint is probably above average in warranty #s and service (pure observational info on my part though). It is a great cam to pair up with the HME screw in adapter mount, to mount up high and angle down - it'd make a great scrape cam. Again, it's not going to be a $200 level camera, but for those who want to learn and tinker with black flash, this is a great entry point.

I get 4-5 bars of service along 104...no worries about reception there. Many people are getting the itch for them - some are intimidated, but it's super easy to set-up. It's always nice when you wake up to photos like that. Or like this one - although not a shooter this year - still nice when there's a blind in the background, lol. Sure beats working at work.

In another 4 or 5 years...sheesh.

I'll admit to some quartering to shots, but they've always been very slight angles, more broadside than quartering inward. Can't say I've ever been stymied by that one...moreso because I don't take those hard angle shots...been bit by high and low shots before...and one in the ham in my younger years that I still to this day can't figure out what went wrong (form and fever most likely I guess). Mistakes happen even with the best of intentions...but as long as you learn more from your losses than your victories, all is well. No need repeating what you've already learned, even if not originally planned.

We in large don't have the best grasp on deer vocalizations. I can't recall hearing a snort wheeze my whole life and about three years ago, I finally heard one and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I've since heard it each year on a few days. Even seen the bucks making the sound. I've since used that call as a kitchen sink method. I run about 50-50 in turning larger bucks with it...when it does, it's a pretty interesting sight. They tend to come in forecfully rather than carefully slinking in. The others turn inside out or lock up and wander off. I don't see much trying to get downwind of the sound to investigate quietly. If they are moving downwind, they're committed by coming aggressively. I don't use that call without a visual, however. It also seems to work better in Ohio than here in NY.

This place wouldn't be the same without Steve and Steve-isms. Steve you are A-OK in my book.

At some point, the law of diminishing returns comes into play. I believe we're past that point. Society today is evolving faster than the human ability to provide corrective action. Things happen so much faster now. My focus is on doing the best I can in my small world and setting the stage for my kids to have the best leg up possible in a real crappy societal enviornment. The have vs. have not issue has been around forever (and that's often the root), but it's only going to be more disparaging as time goes on.

LOL. You just don't get it. The OP said...he saw some leaves change. Others said they've seen the same thing. You are taking it to a level not really in context of the thread. The other thing I don't get is the bold part. You are on a hunting forum in August, talking about not thinking about hunting season.
-
You are missing the forest for the trees. Talk about flying over your head. I don't think anyone said it's peak leaf change or that its fall per say. People simply said there are trees starting to turn - proven by pics no less. Sheesh, reading comprehension much?

what the best bow pro shop in your county of NY
phade replied to sweet old bill's topic in Bow Hunting
Wow, that's surprising from his level of Mathews sales. But, I'll be honest, I found that guy to be a major "expletive." There's far fewer shops I trust now as time wears on. If I had time, I would invest in the equipment and knowledge gaining to be self-sufficient, but it's one area where I simply have modified my strategy...own bows longer, take good care of them, and there's less need to go into a shop. Plus, I have a lawyer looking at one of my bows now. Apparently, lawyers make good bow tuners? He probably threatens the cams into time, lol. -
Snapped some pics...not the best as there are many other trees there in that area turning. But, suffice it to say Steve-o...they are a changin'.

I'm up there often. A friend owns a large apple farm and my family does some work for them from time to time. Also have a lease in the area. My wife is from Wayne County. I never let her forget her 315 roots.
