LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...
goosifer replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Well, two of my hunting buddies and I were able to navigate the roads this morning and make it out for a morning sit. We basically had three of the four corners of the property covered. Buddy in SW stand spotted a nice buck cutting W to E in the middle of the property, but neither I, nor my other hunting buddies had a shot. Oh, and this one hurts. In the stand for 10 minutes this morning, when a small animal pops onto the trail 50 yards to my right. My brain goes "Oh, it's the fox". (I don't mind the fox.) Then it goes, "wait a second, that's not a fox . . . ." So I go to get my gun resting across the shooting rail, the coyote hears or sees me, and runs back into the woods. No chance to get a clean shot. I would much rather have gotten that coyote today than another deer. But we will get him soon enough . . . . -

I'll be out Saturday at least half a day with hunting buddies, Monday, and at least half a day Tuesday. It gets really windy where I hunt, so a day like Sunday is a no go. I wonder how crusty the snow will be on Monday after rain followed by frigid temps. (I don't think the rain will melt all of the snow Saturday night, but who knows.) -

Sorry to hear this, Papist. Today is a dark day. -
My condolences to you and your family. Although a sad story, I can't help but takeaway the positives of how your family is fortunate to be so close; that you, your brother and your father were able to hunt together; and that your father's illness did not prevent from doing what he enjoyed.

I struck out today, but one of my hunting buddies had some action. Early morning he saw two doe in the field, started to aim, then saw a third doe run into the picture, being chased by a decent looking buck (8 pointer?). He then aimed for the buck but misjudged the distance, overshooting the buck's back (clean miss). Glad to hear we are having some second rut action in my area. He got a consolation prize button buck at the end of the day. He could only see his head as he passed through the thick stuff in the field -

in the stand with my new ML (CVA Accura V2 LR), snow camo and blaze trapper hat. Overheated like an old Ford pickup at the moment. Wind is deathly quiet, but I know that wont last. Walking in was quite a scrunch fest of packed snow. -
Best place to buy an ATN X-SIGHT II
goosifer replied to yodasheet's topic in Deals, Coupons and Specials
I just bought one today at http://www.opticsplanet.com/atn-x-sight-ii-day-night-riflescopes.html They have a code for 10% off right now. I did the chat with a salesperson and got 11% off and upgraded to free regular shipping instead of free value shipping. I can't vouch for the item or store yet. I am hopeful the tech kinks have been worked out. For a night vision scope, it looks like a great bang for the buck. Don't need all the bells and whistles, but maybe the video recording part will be interesting. Good luck.- 1 reply

finally! Some snow cover is on the ground in NW 9A, with more snow coming this afternoon. Pic to follow after daybreak. -
funny, they have corn fields south of me, apple orchard SW and W of me, browse and some wild grapes on my property, but I've never been able to figure out what they eat when.

yes, I donated one two weeks ago there. Super easy, just drop it off. -
Full disclosure: I slept in today. Will do at least a half a day tomorrow for the final hurrah for shotgun season.

Who's giving it a go this week and late season with bow or muzzleloader
goosifer replied to rob-c's topic in Deer Hunting
I recently upgraded to a CVA Accura V2 LR muzzleloader. Moved over my Nikon Inline XR scope from my old ML, sighted it in, and I am good to go. Looks like there will finally be some snow on the ground in NW Niagara County by Monday morning. I am hoping that will make spotting the deer in the field a lot easier. -
Will do Vizslas. I will be there in the morning to see what shows up. Thanks.

It feels like it given how long it takes me to field dress a deer, but no I am not. I did have some culinary training in my youth, so maybe that's where I get it.

Knife/Step 4: You need a sharp pointy knife to cut around the anus. I used to use the Butt-out, which replaced this, but once I got convinced to saw the sternum, I might as well just saw the pelvis, too. One thing I have bought recently for this is a disposable scalpel sold to veterinarians. Lot cheaper than a piranta knife. Sad epilogue, I lost my three Gerber knives recently (that is a whole other story that involved a trip to the emergency room.) I couldn't find the kit that I had bought years ago, and buying them a la carte was pricey, so I bought similar knives that were cheaper. They have worked OK so far. Not sure what the forum policy is to linking to products for purchase, so I have avoided that, just using the pictures instead.
-
Knife/Step 3: I use the Gerber EZ Skinner to cut the diaphragm away from the inside cavity wall and to cut the larynx. I like the way it is held and its shape. Very safe.
-
Knife/Step 2: Once the deer is split open, I use the Gerber EZ Saw to split along the side of the breastplate/sternum (2a) and to split the pelvis bone (2b)
-
This might be TMI, but here it goes. For field dressing, I use four tools/knives. I would like to get it down to three, but not there yet. Knife/step 1: I can't believe no one has mentioned the Gerber EZ Zip gut hook that uses a razor blade. This makes splitting the deer open without piercing the guts relatively easy and safe. Looks like I can only embed one pic per post for some reason. so this will be a four parter. dont' hate me.

the corn field behind my property (overgrown fields and some tree rows)got cut earlier this week. I believe there is still some corn on the ground so it is still food source, but obviously no more cover. How might this affect how and when the deer go to feed in the corn field? Any chance of seeing them during legal light? Thanks

grow, would something like these help? -
It could have been worse. Your kindle could have insisted on one "n" and a u instead of an i at the end. Although I suppose it could qualify as a curiosity scent.
