For the heck of it, I am bumping this thread, specifically my post above. I am almost done brushhogging 3 acres of food plots and will soon need 6 tons of lime. Right now, my best option is 300 bags from Tractor Supply . . . .

Instead of the Sawyers brand, I bought one gallon of $averPak Single – 1 One Gallon Container of JT Eaton Kills Bedbugs, Ticks & Mosquitoes Permethrin Clothing & Gear Treatment with Sprayer for $35. Almost half the price. Gets decent reviews.

This might hurt the repeal the SAFE ACT legislation Ortt is sponsoring. Politics in Niagara County is very interesting . . . . http://buffalonews.com/2017/03/22/albany-grand-jury-indicts-ortt-maziarz-felony-election-law-violations/ http://www.niagara-gazette.com/news/local_news/albany-grand-jury-indicts-maziarz-ortt/article_276af254-0c2a-5fd9-b7ec-751bdfb84a24.html

Grow, there are things that are more important than the brand. Foremost, who is installing the windows? The most expensive window will still be a disaster if it is not installed correctly. Conversely, even the most basic replacement window, if installed correctly, will do an adequate job from an insulation/heat loss/function perspective. If you are doing it yourself, make sure you know what you are doing and do it right. If the company is installing them, be aware that Pella, Marvin, et al are many times sold by authorized resellers/franchisees. Make sure you understand who exactly is responsible for the labor part of the warranty. I have read horror stories about the manufacturer and the franchisee pointing the finger at each other for a window installation gone bad. That aside, look at the specifications (U-factor, et al), warranty, and terms and conditions of the warranty. Then get the best you can for your budget. For my house, I have purchased custom wood framed Marvin windows from Big L Windows and Doors in Buffalo and had Big L install them. For my rentals, I have self installed vinyl replacement windows I ordered from Grossman's Bargain Outlet. I seem to recall a company in the finger lakes area (north of Ithaca) that manufactured and installed there own vinyl replacement windows, if that is of interest. Good luck!

As much as I dislike coyotes, I never would have imagined, much less considered, leaving cyanide gas booby traps to kill coyotes and other "nuisance" animals. This is just crazy. ----------------------------------------------- By Laura Zuckerman SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A "cyanide bomb" planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday. Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, on Thursday afternoon near his home east of Pocatello when he saw what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground and touched the device, causing it to detonate. The explosion sprayed the boy and his 3-year-old, 90-pound (40 kg) pet with toxic cyanide gas, according to the boy's mother, Theresa Mansfield. . . . . link to full article (Not sure how much of the article I am allowed to reprint.)

Gander Mountain has a $20 of $50 code good today and tomorrow. Use code GETLUCKY online or print out coupon at http://www.gandermountain.com/customerappreciation/?icID=NB for in store. I loaded up on seeds when it had the 20% off your order sale in January. Now I don't know what to get with this deal.

Breaking ground what to use?
goosifer replied to corydd7's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I am in a similiar situation as far as putting in new food plots on overgrown fields. I spoke to my local Bobcat dealer that rents implements, and he suggested I use a harley rake attachment for my skidsteer (after brush hogging). I figured if it didn't go deep enough, I could go back and then do the cultivator attachment. Any thoughts on this? -
Let us know how that goes, stubborn1VT. I am going to give the green screen a try, myself.

novice seed planting question
goosifer replied to goosifer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
The reason I was interested in the seeder is that the instructions for the Green Screen mix emphasize to plant in 30" rows and not overcrowd the plants. For "tilling" I was going to rent a soil conditioner/harley rake/power box rake to attach to my skidsteer. I am hopeful that will be sufficient to loosen up the soil. If not, the Bobcat dealer also has a rototiller attachment for the skidsteer, (I might need the rototiller for lime to get into the soil; don't think I'll need to disturb that deep for the seeds per se.) Deer might be OK with 4' of cover, but I would need at least 6' of cover so the deer don't see me Also, Iwant a privacy screen from the street angle. I can go wider on the rows. What would be an example of a "nursery crop"? -
TCIII. Don't backfeed! Not worth it. When we had the big ice storm years ago, my neighbor came over and made a "pig tail" with the male end of a power strip wiring it directly to the furnace. We then plugged that male end to a heavy duty extension cord that was attached to a generator on the back porch. (Don't put the generator in the garage; CO2 risk. Put it on the back porch under an awning if you have one.) Zacher Electric installed my whole house generator for me after that experience. I got nice Kohler unit (12,000 kW, I think), more expensive and less "rated" power than others, but it is a very high quality one vs. a Generac, et al. I can run everything except that in the summer I can only run one of the two AC units.

novice seed planting question
goosifer replied to goosifer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
thanks sailinghudson25. I am just trying to do a privacy fence, maybe 3 rows covering 5' wide, so I think the seeder will do a better job. -
phade, it wouldn't look like this one by any chance? I just ordered it this weekend to give it a try. For details on the specs, see this page.

I was thinking about using Arrow Seed Green Screen Food Plot Screen Mix to make a border around my food plots. Would this Earthway 1001-B Precision Garden Seeder be a reasonable way to plant the seeds? It costs around a $100. Thanks.

Intense article, Mossber500Guy! My best takeaway from it was: "Bucks that have learned to use wind often move downwind, especially at night, using their noses to protect their most vulnerable rear while relying on their eyes to protect their frontal area. With mature bucks cruising in broad daylight, those that have learned to use the wind prefer to move quartering downwind rather than with a nose wind to find ripe does. This allows them to cover much more olfactory ground while using less energy."

Thought I would revive an old thread. Anyone have any recommendations for a source for bulk ag lime, either granular or pelletized, in Niagara county? How far down should the soil be disturbed/disced/cultivated before spreading the lime? Anyone have any experience applying liquid lime? Can it be doned with a regular boom sprayer? How much more costly is it? Thanks.

buy another VCR? I'm sure some folks have one collecting dust somewhere in the house. (I know I do. Darn thing was expensive, too.) or there is always craigslist and ebay.

Interesting. What are your thoughts on how a deer travels relative to the wind? Just curious.

Squirrel hunt controversy
goosifer replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Apparently, Rich@rd Brumm&l has a lot of supporters who left bad reviews for the Holly Fire Department on g00gle here. Perhaps some folks would like to leave a positive review, although I am not sure that the concept of a rating really matters to a fire department like it does a restaurant. -
Squirrel hunt controversy
goosifer replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
This thread inspires me to go squirrel hunting. It appears the guy fighting to stop the hunt is trying to raise money to support his efforts. See his facebook page post from this past Wednesday here (The 800+-mile round trip drive to and from Long Island to Rochester is quite expensive, as well as leaving a large carbon footprint.) The good news is, as of today, he has only raised 32% of his $1,000 goal on indiegogo. I guess he will have to continue to "expend his own funds" so he can go into court tomorrow. As explained on the indiegogo page, "These fund help the de facto leader of this effort, Richard Brummel, make the 800+ mile round trip to Holley, N.Y., from his home on Long Island, including expenses for car rental, gas, motel, tolls, and some ancillary expenses as they arise, such as art supplies for posters, printing for fliers if need be, and certified mail". -
I defrosted some seabass fillets from my offshore ocean fishing adventure link. Sauted them in butter with fresh minced parsley, garlic powder, salt and pepper. The texture of the fish held up very well. For side dishes, we had steamed fresh green beans sauted in butter and potato salad from the store. Sorry no pics.

Ozone Clothes Deodorizer
goosifer replied to airedale's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
If anyone is interested, what I do is I have a dedicated regular closet in the basement for all of my hunting clothes, and I put this ozone generator inside of it and run it for 30-45 minutes the night before I go hunting. I bought some slit pipe insulation to put on the sides of the bypass doors to help make the closet airtight. It's by no means completely airtight, but the unit cranks out so much ozone I really don't think it matters. Only issue is that the ozone is bad for people and pets to breathe. So sometimes if I let it run too long, my wife can smell it upstairs and complains. One oddball concern i have is that I have some silver-based anti-bacterial scent proof clothing, and I worry that the ozone will cause the silver to oxidize and lose effectiveness. I try to keep those clothes out of the closet or in a plastic bag or bin. I try. -
Crazy price ranges out there....
goosifer replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Well, I took the easy way out. Gander Mountain had a 20% off coupon code (again), I bought a gift card at 10% off, and I got a 3% kickback from Mr. Rebates. All in, I paid less than $150 for six different seed blends covering 3-1/2 acres.I got blends from Tecomate, Evolved harvest, and Antler King. (I can list the exact ones if anyone cares.) I tried to get different ones, so I can experiment and see which ones work the best for me. We'll see. -
Sorry for your loss, Lawdwaz. All experienced pet owners know that at some point that the companionship given to them by their pets will need to be repaid with compassion and grieving when the time comes.
