How does RR corn work?
goosifer replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I came across this article that says it has made a direct link between glyphosate and liver cancer. article I really would like to find an alternative to glyphosate other than 10% vinegar. I wonder what they use in France. -
Crazy price ranges out there....

Thanks, grow. I will first lay out the Whitetail institute blends I want as a baseline, and then put some time into finding alternatives like the one you showed below. Dealing with a clover field so that it yields the following year (while keeping the weeds in check) sounds a little tricky to me. i will need to work on that part. Thanks for taking the time to lay out the above info. -

growalot, I've starting looking at the Whitetail Institute blends. Would you know if there exists, or if it is possible to make, a chart of equivalent blends from other seed blend sellers? Likewise, how hard would it be to "make your own" copycat blend? On the other hand, it it worth doing? I'm probably looking at $350 worth (3-1/2 acres) of Whitetail Institute seed blends, and probably could get that down using coupons or sales given the they can be bought in various stores. From a quality perspective, would you have a strong opinion on varying quality for comparable blends from different companies? -

Advice for equipment needed to make food plots
goosifer replied to goosifer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
wolc123, is that time estimate for both brushhogging, and plowing/grading, or just the latter? I need to get the wheels on my skid steer recapped. That should help with traction. BTW, mine is a 2003 Volvo MC80 Skid Steer with 86 h.p. Thanks for your input/advice. -

That is brilliant! I watched the video. link to website It appears to do everything I need. Quite affordable, too. With this, the only attachment I would need to rent is the brush mower. The only question now is can I do it (no experience running a skid steer) and how long will it take to clear and prep 3-1/2 acres. Thanks for the lead on this, LET EM GROW. -

I found a toothbar here I will try to find the toothbar/rake style attachment described by LET EM GROW above. -
I wonder if it would be worth starting a new "I'm going to the QDMA banquet" thread, and then if there seems to be a critical mass of attendance at a particular one, figure out a time and place to meet that day before the banquet.

What's NWTF? I'm out of town now, but live near there.

QDMA chapters do at least one banquet a year. Maybe we could do a forum get together in the afternoon before a QDMA banquet, which is usually in the evening. I will ask Mike Edwards [of QDMA] if there is a master list of NY chapter banquets for 2017.

I saw this article, saw that it wasn't posted in the forum, and figured the regulars here would want to see it. So can one buy non-lead ammo for dear hunting? link Obama Official Issues Ammunition Ban for Federal Lands on Last Day in Office BY: Stephen Gutowski The Washington Freedom Beacon January 20, 2017 3:47 pm U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe, an Obama appointee, ordered a new ammunition ban for certain federal lands on Thursday–his last full day in office. The ban, which took effect immediately, eliminates the use of lead-based ammunition on federal lands like national parks and wildlife refuges, as well as any other land administered by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The ban is expected to have a major impact on much of the hunting that takes place on federal lands across the United States as lead-based ammunition is widely legal and used throughout the country. . . .

How to attach implements to a 2004 RTV900 UTV?
goosifer replied to goosifer's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
I just found some hits for UTV spreaders which carry the weight in the bed. I suppose that would be best. Or I can get a towable one, possibly. Still, a 2" receiver option would be nice. Update: I think I found a doable and affordable option. The EarthWay Broadcast Tow-Behind Spreader — 80-Lb. Capacity, Model# 2050TP $99 plus $17 shipping, but I should be able to get that under $100 with coupons. Any opinions on this option? Update 2: After reading reviews, I guess this model is too lightweight for my intended use. But I think a mid-range towable spreader will be the way to go. -
Would anyone have any ideas on how I could attach implements like a seed spreader or liquid sprayer to my 2004 Kubota RTV900 UTV? Unfortunately, it comes with a 1-1/4" Class 1 Receiver (the newer ones have a 2" class 2 receiver). I have seen implements that use a 2" Class 2 receiver that look nice. I know I can buy a receiver adapter, but I am not sure how much weight the assembly could handle. I have seen implements that attach to the racks of ATV's, and was thinking I could somehow secure them to the cargo bed with the tailgate down, but that seems messy to me. I have also considered replacing the class 1 receiver with a class 2 receiver, which would be ideal, but I am not sure if that is feasible. (I am also aware of the Farm Boy 3-point hitches, and while those are very nice, I don't think I want to go that route.) I have attached a picture for reference. It's not mine, but same year and model. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. I should have mentioned that the weather was mid-70s today, and I was able to fish in shorts and a t shirt. Not bad for mid-January, even for Northeast Florida. The captain says he usually only goes out for 5 charter trips during a typical January. We've been very lucky with the weather this week.

I went on a 6-hour offshore fishing trip with my stepson today off the cost of St. Augustine and Jacksonville, FL. I have only fished once before, and that was in a small boat off Long Island years ago. This was a 36 foot 600 hp center console boat. Water was a bit choppy heading 10 miles offshore due to swirling winds. We then headed north about 10 miles towards Jacksonville. For most of the time we had lines in the water, it was non-stop action. We were bottom fishing, and the fish would sometimes hit the bait before I had even set the reel. I must have caught over three dozen fish throughout the day. Unfortunately, most of them got thrown back in the water. We ended up keeping our limit of seabass (5 over 13" each). Over half the fish we caught were red snapper, some nice sized ones, too, but we could not keep any. Also caught a 30# drum fish and a small strawberry grouper that had to go back. If anyone has visions of relaxing while ocean fishing, forget it. There was no place to sit. Instead you had to brace the front of your legs against the sidewall of the boat while holding the rod in your hands. This did not do my back any favors. With all the action, my wrists were actually getting tired. (I know, I know.) Then there was the mid-trip nausea and dry heaves for five minutes. The captain gave me credit for getting right back on the horse and continuing to fish afterwards. I don't mean to complain, I just wanted to relay my actual experience. The captain definitely delivered as far as finding where the fish were goes. As I understand it, trolling-style fishing happens in the summer when the ocean water is warm. Maybe I will give that a try someday.

One year I had to get a deer processed as I was hunting near West Valley for the weekend and I shot a deer on Saturday. I just asked for the deer to be quartered and deboned. I then was able to trim and cut the meat the way I wanted. That worked out well. This year, I bought a bunch of ground pork on sale at Budwey's in anticipation of doing my own deer. But due to an injury, I had to take it to the Buck and Doe shop to get processed. They were nice enough to take the ground pork I had bought and add it to my ground meat. I also remember there was something I didn't like they way they did (the butcher left the silverskin on the roasts). The guy in the front of the store let me go in back and speak to the butcher that actually worked on my deer about it. He explained they keep the silverskin on the roasts as it helps retain the moisture in the roast. Well, not sure I buy that, but overall, they do a good job and give good service so I can live with that. it was cool to go back there, with the heavy duty kitchen equipment and vacuum plastic bag packager. Nice setup they have.

Vilano. Hurricane damage doesn't look to bad. Lots of demolished piers and walkovers. A few homes got condemned, but overall not as bad as we were expecting.

Spending the next few months in St. Augustine, Florida for the annual winter retreat mandated by the Mrs. While down here, I will focus on doing my taxes and researching food plots. My hunting buddies are going to try to do some coyote hunting while I am away. It sucks not being able to join them , or look for deals on farming equipment on craigslist, et al, but sometimes you have to pay the piper. A happy wife is a happy life. Anyone else have to do forced time away from NY this winter?

New Video - Dump'n Deuces
goosifer replied to downwindoutdoors's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
noob question: What animal is the "squealer" call supposed to represent? mortally wounded bunny? chimp? Nice video. If only it were that easy all the time . . . . -
I've been continually scanning for clearance deals on hunting stuff since Christmas. I did most of my damage the week after Christmas at various sites. Off the top of my head, I bought 3 new pairs of hunting pants, 2 pairs of gloves and 3 more treestands. Last week, I bought two 15' tripod stands from Wal-Mart. I also helped a hunting buddy find a great deal on a hunting parka at Gander Mountain two weeks ago. At this point, I am still looking, but honestly don't really need any more gear. I do wonder if/when the food plot seeds will go clearance. That is something I am interested in.
