  1. 50 yards from the stand. Better shot placement than I thought. Lungs, and probably an artery. Very, very grateful this morning. The wife and I have food for a while. Many tips I read here lead me to this moment. Thank you... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  2. I think I shot her a little far back, so I'm going to give her some time. I did see her tumble down about 40 yards away. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  3. Just saw a red tail swoop down and miss a chipmunk. Nothing seen so far, but some little thing scampered by before light, I'm thinking it was a fox or fisher cat. And right at shooting light, something was coming in slow and cautious, snapping twigs, but I couldn't see it through the hemlock. I should have been more patient, but was trying to catch a view, and I bet it caught me moving. I heard something brush against a branch of leaves quick, and then nothing. I feel ya, Red Tail. 4. I'll be heading in soon. Hoping for a doe here in 4L. A little warm, 45, but the pressure is falling. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  5. Glad you had friends and family around through all of it. Reads like a tight knit between you all, and I'm hoping you folks find comfort in that, and that it heightens the joyful times as well.
  6. I know this is the screw-in steps thread, but I figured I'd follow up on the climber bit: I tested out the Lone Wolf Hand Climber this weekend, and I wish I had made the time to do so earlier. I love how it packs down, and how light it is. I'm going to need more practice before I truly trust myself out in the woods, but all-in-all, it's easy to use, pretty darn quiet, light enough to hike miles with, and a pretty simple set-up and design. It's light enough to stalk while checking out sign, and then setting up once I find good sign. I am super-excited to take it out once I'm more confident on how best to space the two parts while climbing, and then getting the stabilizer straps set. Maybe I'll mark the straps with tape once I find the best height. I did add a bunch of electrical tape to the bow holder, because I imagine that the bow limbs on metal is a bad combination for both the life of the limbs and for noise. I also wish I had sprung the extra bit for the larger foot space; no room for error here. I think it was only 4 lbs heavier and $20 more.
  7. Well... Consider me sold on the Evercalm. I paid the fare, and am riding the wagon. Picked up the last stick on the rack at the Latham Field & Stream this afternoon. At $20, I sure hope it lasts through December. Wasn't going to hunt tomorrow morning, but now... I really like Wooly's idea of rubbing my hunting clothes over the hide of a harvest, doe in particular. If I'm fortunate this year, I think I'll try that.
  8. I've been jumping deer when I get home from whatever mid-day errand over the past week. That's about 1-3 pm. I really wanted to hunt the early afternoon over the plot today, but work... Also - reads like you might need to rest up for a day or two, Grow.
  9. I sat for 2.5 hours this morning in 4L. It was 30 degrees when I went out to sit at 5:45. TONS of pre-dawn activity. I have no idea what what causing all the noise. I chose a stand over a plot situated amongst some oaks, but didn't see anything from dawn until 9ish, when a doe fawn responded to a light rattle. I hoped that other deer would pass by too, but she was alone, and I let her walk. Might not be back in a stand until Thursday, before the next weather front.
  10. My buddy shows up, and wants to send a few arrows down the lane before heading in to the woods. First he shears a fletch. Down to two arrows. Sends a couple more down, and the peep sight pops out from the string. We pack it up and head to F&S, where The fella fixes us right up. We're an hour behind my plan, but we're still dedicated. He sends an arrow down to sight in the peep. Shot sails over the target and the arrow snaps in two. He loses the front end, and the practice broad head. He sights in with his only arrow. On the way in, 15 yards from where I plan to set us up, I find two large piles of deer scat, practically steaming, they were so fresh. We missed that one. We set up and settle in 10 feet inside the marsh. 40 minutes later a doe and two fawns walk the in the direction I had planned for, but on the farther trail, 60 yards out. No shot. I bleat her, and she tracks to us, but gets into the young pines, and decides the bleat isn't interesting enough. She and her fawns move along through the thick stuff, about 30 yards out. I give her a minute and rattle quick. Two minutes later we here and see a deer jump out of the marsh 40 yards to our left, and head out. Something spooked it, and I think it was on its way to us to check out all the racket. A minute after that, my buddy looks at me and says, "someone's coming down the trail with a dog," a huge white Great Pyrenees that stops along the trail and catches our scent. It took him a good minute (I can't believe the owner let the dog sniff that long!), and looks up to spot my buddy. We're busted with 30 mins of light left... We gave the dog owner one hell of a scare (there's a foot trail at my property line), but she laughed it off, and so did we. Looks like we'll have to pick another day to hunt... 11. Decided against a morning hunt; the wind is whipping the trees, and I'd probably get motion sick. I practiced with the new climber, and I'm going to change up a stand location. This afternoon, my buddy heads up for an afternoon ground sit. Likely his first and last bow hunt of the year. Hope I pick a good spot. This wind is problematic for my lil' slice o'Heaven. Good luck out there, especially to all the young'uns! I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  12. I'm with@shawnhu. Let us know how the morning track winds up. Add to my last post: Forgot to mention that a Black-throated Blue Warbler flew right up to me today. Hung out on a branch and checked me out for a bit. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  13. Had a doe come up behind me again. 10 yards. Too windy and wet to hear here approach. She had no idea I was there, but by the time I swung around and drew the bow, she bounded behind a hemlock on her way somewhere else and never presented me with a shot. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  14. Making a quick run to pick up some tree straps, and then back in for the afternoon. Hope to be in by 3. Pumped to see the deer down photos! I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  15. Nothin but bluejays and squirrels since 7ish. Calling it soon. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  16. No scrapes (but for the ones I'm working), no rubs on my little spot here in 4L. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  17. Chose the stand over the food plot. Loud entry this morning, and I had to double back after getting up in the stand; forgot to set up a tree strap... Down and up again. It was dark long past legal light here in 4L, but just before 7, the deer kept running along the far edge of the plot, just inside the woods. No shot. I think I called too much attention to my locale. I'll wait it out for a couple of hours, but I've got that feeling that the hunt is off... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  18. Northwest wind is making my stand selection difficult. I'm thinking the one near the plot for wind, but the acorns are where the action's been. Tough choices this morning. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  19. Gotta wrap it up here in 4L. Company coming in a few hours, and I best be helpful... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  20. No shots in 4L. Wind picking up. Lots of squirrels and chipmunks. No deer since just after sunrise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. A doe came up behind me at 10 yards after a light rattle sequence. Didn't spook, but spent some time checking me out. Couldn't move, no shot. Her friends were up the hill, and one of them blew, and they all took off. Wonder if there's another Hunter up the way. 50 or so degrees. Light wind coming up from the south here in 4L. Had a stare-down with a yote on the way in 15 yards, his eyes shining back my red light. Erie as hell, and sent shivers all about. Of course, I had read the coyote attack thread right before I headed out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Technically in the woods... Stand sitting tomorrow morning. Family at 1 pm. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. FYI - I attempted to "Like this" first thing this morning, and I received a notice stating that I've reached my 25 likes for the day. It was my first "Like this" of the day, however. I don't think I was near 25 "Like this" yesterday (I could be wrong), but maybe the server is on a different date/time than EST? My guess is that all users will have a clean slate starting at 12:00 a.m. I attempted to refresh my browser and click the "Like this" button again, but received the error. If there's a history of "Like this" stemming from my account since 12:00 a.m., 10/17 there might be an issue with my account/user profile. I'm using Firefox 49.0.1 on a mac. Thanks very much for all the work and help!
