  1. Still no fresh buck sign by me up in 4L. The does are here, so it's probably best to wait for the bucks to arrive in a couple of weeks, and scout for buck sign elsewhere. I did start a mock scrape, but only a forkie checks it out, and the the other, used scrape has been maintained by me only. I've used buck urine, as well as my own in both spots.
  2. Just took a walk up to the little food plot. Doesn't seem to be any activity there, but jumped a few bedded doe (probably same ones from earlier) about 60 yards away when they caught my scent downwind. The mature doe blew out, and flagged her way across the street. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  3. Staring out into the backyard woods. Doe slowly moving along browsing (probably acorns). Two or three. Couldn't see all that well through the hedges. 61 degrees, light wind out of the WNW. Humid. 4L - Taborton Mtn. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  4. I don't have one of value to trade (I've got two 4J), but if anyone won't be using their DMPs from either 4U, or 4K, I'd be a willing receiver of those tags. I'd also be happy to part with the 4J, should anyone want one.
  5. I'm going to try this next time out, next week.
  6. So far this year, I've had decent luck calling doe in with light rattle sequences. From what I understand and from what I've read, the girls are sometimes curious to see who's fighting in the playground.
  7. https://huntingny.com/forums/store/ You can send a contribution via PayPal, or money order. And/or pick up some HuntingNY gear. Yep. I'm in. Just did legwork. Thanks for a great site, Burmjohn.
  8. I'm no expert, by any means, but top and bottom picture of leaves looks like beech, and the middle picture looks like cherry.
  9. Did you do anything to prepare the bluefish, like brine it, or soak it in lemon juice? I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  10. Glad you'll have the opportunity to put an arrow through her another time, Zues. Someone stomped at us, but we couldn't see who through the new growth pines. Nothing after that... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  11. We're set up behind a fallen pine as a ground blind. 65 degrees, wind swirling a bit. Here's to hoping the forecasted rain and the falling pressure gets them up and moving before sunset. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  12. Taking my buddy out in the back yard for an evening sit. Hopefully we choose the right spot and draw one in for his first deer. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  13. I see what you did there... Ha. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  14. Nice! We had one last night... We had hoped to have it the night of harvest, but got caught up with a few beers post-butchering. We seared it up with crushed garlic and rosemary in olive oil. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  15. Looks like a bruiser! I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  16. Congrats on the doe! I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  17. Based on comments on another thread, I bought a stick of Ever Calm on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, I rubbed some on my boots and on the base of some trees around my stand. I was hoping to lay down a doe that had been sneaking by. Just after legal light something was snapping twigs along my walk-in trail. I think I spooked whatever it was with movement as I tried to get an eye on it from my stand, and through a hemlock. An hour later, that doe I was looking for came in cautious, but not on high alert like she had been on prior days. I laid her down from 15 yards downwind from me. I don't know if the scent stick truly worked (I had also moved my stand to a better location), but I do think it made that doe calm enough to stop long enough for me to put an arrow through her. Like Grampy, I'll update on additional experiences.
  18. These are Shaggy Manes, and are edible. We had these last night with backs traps from one of last year's deer. They paired well, and we cooked the manes over medium high heat with butter and garlic. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  19. Get out safe, and get well... That's a tough night in the woods. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  20. I'm all out of likes, folks. Thank you to all! We'll be live from the kitchen later with friends. We enjoy a pan seared deer heart. And then to the butchering.
  21. On opening weekend, she almost busted me from behind my stand. This past weekend she snuck behind me again. On Monday, I moved the stand to a different tree and cut down a few branches between two hemlocks. This morning, with the stand re-positioned and about 5' higher, I saw her coming, and used the hemlock in front of me to grab the bow, stand, turn, and draw. She quartered to me at 15 yards, and kept scenting and head-bobbing. She was cautious, but not on high alert. I had a small window before I lost her behind a second hemlock, so I aimed and took the quarter-to shot. She jumped about five feet and stood for a second, and I thought I saw dark blood pouring out of a middle-bodied entry wound. She looked around, but never looked up, so I hadn't been busted. She then ran off, and I thought I heard her tumble, but maybe bed down, close by. I decided to wait an hour before I climbed out of the stand and made any noise. After about 40 mins or so of scanning around, I saw the arrow sticking up out of the ground, and there was blood on the fletching, brighter than what I thought I had seen immediately after the shot. I climbed down, inspected the arrow, took a quick look in the direction she ran, and saw her dead about 50 yards away. I got her lungs, and her liver, and a whole lot of dinner for us.
