Looked out the bedroom window, and momma and her two fawns were in the back yard. Still chomping up acorns, and they are getting fat. Her button buck fawn looked like a little pig. The afternoons seem to be too warm for movement, but I've been seeing deer on their feet in the morning. It's just over 40 here in 4L, on Taborton Mtn. Sitting in stand tomorrow morning, trying to get in front of the weather coming up from the south. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Dude's a bruiser! -
Also - in the above quote from fasteddie, you'll find a link to a view of what the log looks like, in case you want to keep track until you get an official log from DEC.

I had the same issue, and called got redirected, and left a voicemail. A couple of days later, I received two logs in the mail. Like fasteddie, I mailed one back. A couple days after that, a fella from DEC replied to my initial request email, and informed me that the logs had been sent earlier in the week (last week), and that I should be receiving them shortly if I hadn't already. He also mentioned my voicemail. So... It seems someone is over there.

Hi, Grow... I initially posted as a light-hearted story, and hadn't considered the serious consequences you raised. Since I didn't find the deer myself, I didn't think about the deer beyond the surface story. I was looking to have a laugh. I don't have the experience you do, Grow, and will never catch up. But I always appreciate your input because of your wealth of experience, and enjoy learning from it - sincerely... I hope to have something valuable to contribute. No one can say for sure what happened to the deer (without further examination) because no one saw it before it lay dead. The fella that found the deer called DEC, with the hope of the deer being donated to a food pantry. That's where the story I was told ended. He figured that the deer was hit by a car, because he didn't see any external wounds. It's a reasonable conclusion for an urban mindset living in the suburbs, as he does. He doesn't have that kind of rural expertise, nor experience. I imagine that's why he called the DEC and let them handle it. Perhaps he was wrong, and the deer was poisoned, or rabid, as you mentioned. It's certainly possible, and I hadn't thought of that when I was told the story, as I mentioned above. I just relayed the story I was told. But I'm now reaching out to my co-worker to get word to the fella that found the deer. I won't be able to sleep, if I don't try... My hope, at this point, is that the responding ECOs are trained and experienced enough to determine if they needed to think along the same lines you did, and would consider testing the meat before processing if something looked off or suspicious (like a deer dying at your doorstep). I don't know what their response was, because I wasn't there, but I will share, if I learn more. I don't know what my response would have been if the deer had arrived at my doorstep. I'm of the thought that I would have called DEC, and not tagged it myself, because "something is off here." I can say, for sure, that if it happens to me tomorrow, I'll definitely have the idea of poisoning and rabies embedded in the back of my mind... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk

The oaks up here in 4L are still raining acorns, and it seems like they've been doing so for months. I think a few of them finally dried up, though. I'm hoping that the my little plot starts picking up in a couple of weeks as the oaks all run out. At about 5:45 p.m. tonight, the wife heard what she described as two large calibre shots fired one a few seconds after the first, and then nothing. My mind wandered to poachers, as I sat in the car wash reading her text message.

Hadn't thought of either disease or poisoning. Certainly both possibilities, and raises the question in my mind as to whether or not DEC or whomever does the processing checks the donated animal for either of those. On the other hand, I have seen foamy blood at the mouth of a dead dear. The double lung shot of my late season doe last year produced a similar look at the nose and snout. The blood was fresher than in the above picture, though. If I hear more from my co-worker, I'll update the thread...

Site issues, hopefully resolved.

Thank you! -
Of course, the guy isn't a hunter, and he gets an 8 pnt to lay down at his doorstep like an offering. We, as hunters, spend hours in the deer's neighborhood, waiting, hoping, pleading, praying, cursing in vain for that one to walk by... Hahahahahaaha.

Can't make it up... My co-worker just came into my office to share a picture her friend texted over. That's the pic attached below. Her friend woke up this morning, looked out the window, and while the coffee steamed the glass, that's what he saw. An 8-pt buck (2.5 is my guess? Giving aging a go...) dead on her doorstep, like he was trying to get in the house with his last bit of breath and life. Her friend looked the deer over, and couldn't find a puncture wound, so he thinks that it's a car hit. DEC and the venison donation program get this one, folks.

20 yard hit in the gut. He stood up on his hind legs to check me out as I drew the bow. Montec G5 Small Game Head. Devastating. Not going to show you the other side of him. Fella scampered 10 feet and expired in seconds. Purchased the broad heads after watching a video from The Field Archer.

Damn, man. Bad news to read. May the mending be quick, and may you be back out before long!

I was in the "Tapatalk Trouble" camp last evening. I had hightailed it back from Cambridge, MA, and made it into the stand by 3 pm. About 10 mins after legal light, I started to pack up, and a lone doe walked in, delaying my walk out by about 30 mins. She took her time chomping on those acorns. She was the only deer I saw yesterday. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk

In Cambridge, MA for a show on Saturday, and leaving tonight. Plan is to wake early Sunday, hit the road, and be in the stand by 3 pm. My friend, Beer may have a different plan in mind come Saturday night.

My cousin told me the same story (though he may have exaggerated the buck size, ha...). That happened to him this past season.
