  1. Finally got my NCStar red laser sighted in this week and I don't know why every gun doesn't just come with one! This thing is cheap and works great once you get it sighted in. Sighting it in is a PIA though. But if you want spend more you can get one that's easier. Pup tracked one to a slick tree to start the night. I think it had just come down the tree about a minute before he got there but he couldn't figure it out. Then saw this one from a ways away. I called him over and he tree checked until he found it. Typical pup sometimes he impresses sometimes just frustrates.
  2. There are some great packs that have carrying built into them. Really comfortable http://www.amazon.com/ALPS-OutdoorZ-Matrix-Hunting-Pack/dp/B0084Y9N0M
  3. Sorry if this is out there somewhere but I couldn't locate it. I'm new to the forum and everything I post in automatically adds to my following list and notifies me. I found how to remove them but is there a way to turn this off? I want to be able to opt into following a thread not have to opt out of it. It's blowing up my email.
  4. Wal-Mart is a bad example. They won't even let you buy 9mm rounds there without a pistol permit. They misinterpret the law big time. The law says if the ammo is manufactured only for use in a pistol you must have a pistol permit. Tons of stuff shoot 9mm but they insist it is pistol ammo. Got in a fight with the store manager over 22 shorts about a year ago. Used my phone right in front of him to find a long gun on walmart.com that shot shorts to prove to him they are not just for pistols. I had my pistol permit but wanted to prove a point. Anyways back to the subject buying online generally only makes sense if you're buying something hard to find, buying in bulk or don't live close to a store. The prices after shipping just generally are not worth it. Even before the SAFE Act. Again generally there are exceptions.
  5. A used Browning Maxus http://www.browning.com/products/firearms/shotguns/maxus-shotguns.html
  6. Agreed but there are some that will. And honestly I find they have the best deals.
  7. Who's definition of being in a business? If I can't deduct it on my taxes or have to pay taxes on the income then I'm not in business. That's the governments definition not mine. https://www.irs.gov/uac/Business-or-Hobby%3F-Answer-Has-Implications-for-Deductions The IRS presumes that an activity is carried on for profit if it makes a profit during at least three of the last five tax years, including the current year Does the time and effort put into the activity indicate an intention to make a profit? Does the taxpayer depend on income from the activity? If there are losses, are they due to circumstances beyond the taxpayer’s control or did they occur in the start-up phase of the business? Has the taxpayer changed methods of operation to improve profitability? Does the taxpayer or his/her advisors have the knowledge needed to carry on the activity as a successful business? Has the taxpayer made a profit in similar activities in the past? Does the activity make a profit in some years? Can the taxpayer expect to make a profit in the future from the appreciation of assets used in the activity?
  8. No background check needed. I don't do them and wouldn't buy from anyone that said they were going to. As I understand it they actually can't. The reason that never went into effect is because the feds told Cuomo they wouldn't do them. they didn't have the man power to handle that kind of load nor the funds to support it. Cuomo then tasked it to the state police but they don't have the man power or system to do it. He was never able to get the funding for them to create the system or staff it. I read somewhere that he has agreed it will never be implemented and stopped pushing it. But until the law is amended you still have to pick it up in person which is pointless because they don't care who you are.
  9. 15+ years ago when I took mine it took me over a year to find one that was an hour plus away. Not many people are certified to give the courses anymore. Your best bet is to find someone that nuisance traps and ask them if they know someone that gives the course every year. If you can take the course that certifies you to nuisance trap too. It doesn't cost extra, I think it was only an extra hour long. Its just an added bonus in case you ever need to trap something out of your property off season. At least that's how it worked way back when I took my course.
  10. If you go onto any major retailers site you can buy it online and pick it up in their store. They don't need an FFL. They need a seller of Ammunition certificate which is free if you have a tax id. There are services out there where they will buy the ammo for you and you can pick it up from them for a small fee. A lot of sites though just don't want to deal with the hassle or are boycotting NYS so they won't ship it to anywhere in NYS. There are still great deals to be had on the internet you just can't get it shipped to your home. The point was that all ammo purchases were to be done in person because you were going to need a background check. That never happened but he'll never amend that law.
  11. Those days aren't gone. You can hunt that way if you'd like. We as people invent things to make life easier. Tracking data and doing an analysis is just one of those things. I also have a pistol grip on my shotgun. It allows me to hold it better and get a better more comfortable shot. A traditional stock or a bow for that matter still works. Mines just better/newer.
  12. There used to be a guy out in weedsport my father used to go to. Gander used to have one in Henrietta but now they ship it out. Jackson ammo also had one but they got closed down. The guy that did it though was a partnership that had his own business too. I bet he's still around somewhere. I think his name was Jason. He did some work on one of my pistols.
  13. I didn't read this entire thread just the first few pages. What I'll say is that I hunt less than a mile from the village I live in. This year I had the cops called on me after the farmer begged me to hunt this one particular field. I was legal and safe and the cops thanked me for shooting the Deer there because they write an accident report a week right there. The only reason the lady next door new I shot was because it was a 12 ga (no rifle there). I don't bow hunt anymore and it wouldn't have been effective there anyway because I was laying down in the middle of a clover field. An air rifle may have avoided that. Plus there is no reason everyone in the village needs to know when I shoot. I also shoot subsonic out of my 22 when coon hunting as sometimes thats actually within the village limits. I have one of those spring powered 1200 fps pellet guns and it too works pretty good for shooting down coons. I would like to see air rifles opened up. I am all for any new technology that improves the hunting experience. Everyone should be free to hunt with what they want as long as its safe.
  14. ActionCAM's are nice. They are branded under a few different names (ActionCAM and CaptionHD are two I know of) but they are made here in NY by a guy running a small business. They are a no fuss camera. They have a nice barrel mount and a pic rail mount. They also have a hat clip and bow mount. They don't zoom and you need to make sure you clip them in but they are nice little cameras. They easily switch from one mount to the other so you can get all the action from different angles. They're HD and have a weather cover that you can film through. Extremely light weight! Like I said though they don't zoom but if you're getting the shot POV you're not going to be messing with that anyway. You do it after the fact in the video software. Way lighter and smaller than gopros.
  15. Congrats! Just had my first last year. Its an amazing thing!
  16. Look I'm not advertising my site here so I won't go into specifics but there are ways around the online ordering ban. You might not be able to get it delivered to your home but you won't have to drive far to pick it up. The law doesn't say you can't buy your ammo online. It says you have to pick it up in person. The reasoning was the background checks on ammo that never happened.
  17. I hunt the nite hunts once in a while for the social aspect of it. There is a lot of bs that goes on though. I just have fun, avoid or ignore it. Nothing ever comes of it. The sport is hurting too much for clubs to do anything. I have a lot of fun at the HTX hunts. For the way I hunt my hound I find they are the most beneficial. Orleans county club is the only one I know of around here that does them. They need participation though or they're going to cut them.
  18. This is a great topic. I want to be better at this than I am. I hunt so much I don't have the time or attention span to log it all. There are some great apps out there to help with this. I start using them but then lose interest as I find my gut is often the best way. Huntstand lite and scout are two I like. PocketRanger is another good app.
  19. Sorry if this has already been posted. New here and still looking around. This is something I thought was worth sharing. DECDelivers press release DECDelivers - Information to keep you connected and informed from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Share or view as a web page || Update preferences or unsubscribe DEC Announces Proposed Rule Changes to Allow Big Bore Air Rifles for Big Game Hunting Public Comments Accepted Through February 8 The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is now accepting public comment on proposed regulation changes that would allow the use of big bore air rifles as a legal implement for taking big game at certain times and places in New York, beginning in the fall 2016 hunting seasons, Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. DEC will accept written public comment on the proposed rule changes through February 8, 2016. DEC is proposing to amend the regulations found within Title 6 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (6 NYCRR section 180.3) to allow the use of certain air-powered firearms for hunting big game. Air-powered rifles that meet certain specifications, termed "big bore air rifles," have adequate downrange energy to effectively harvest New York big gamespecies. In 2010, DEC amended these regulations to allow the use of air-powered firearms for hunting small game. "The popularity of air-powered firearms is growing, largely because of technological advancements," said Acting Commissioner Seggos. "These modern firearms produce the force necessary to efficiently harvest big game animals. In addition, because big bore air rifles are not as loud as conventional rifles or shotguns, allowing their use may make hunting more acceptable in locations with higher human densities, including areas where deer are overabundant." Big bore air rifles are available commercially, and they fire bullets of sufficient size at sufficient velocities to safely and efficiently harvest big game. These big bore air rifles would only be allowed for taking big game where other types of rifles are allowed to be used for taking big game. Use of rifles for big game hunting is allowed in most New York counties. Please visit the Rifle, Shotgun, and Bow Areas webpage on DEC's website for more information. Details of the proposed rule can be viewed in the December 23 publication of the New York State Register and on DEC's website under Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources Proposed, Emergency and recently adopted regulations. Citizens who wish to make formal public comments through February 8 may do so by sending an email to:[email protected] (include "air rifle regulations" in the subject line) or by writing to: Bryan L. Swift, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Bureau of Wildlife, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754 http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/104508.html
  20. New to the forum here and jumping in late but this is a topic I'm passionate about. As mentioned earlier in the thread there is the vote for a constitutional convention coming up. Voting yes for it doesn't guarantee any changes but it doesn't hurt us either. It is the easiest way to get any meaningful changes like this done. I'm not saying splitting off NYC is the right answer (but usually wouldn't oppose it) but there are other ways we can shift the balance of power.
  21. That is not true. I open carry even though I have a concealed carry permit. There is on law that say it is illegal. It is only in the interpretation of the law. There is no case law that shows anyone has ever been convicted in NYS for open carry. There is case law that shows people being convicted of disturbing the peace because they were open carrying. For that reason I do not open carry all the time. Also a "standard" restriction that can be printed on a full carry permit is "may not carry concealed". I have seen this once on a ADA's permit. He said the judge did it so that he didn't accidentally walk into a court house with it on because he put a jacket on (concealing it) and forgot it was there. It forced him to pay attention. He didn't seem to mind.
  22. Hello, As you might guess I'm new to the forum here. I'm an avid NYS hunter and live outside of Rochester. I haven't looked around the forum much but plan to. I figured I hunt so much and am a member of other great online hunting communities that when I found this one I should join. A little about me. I kill Deer for the meat, conservation, and to help keep auto insurance premiums down. I'm not a big buck guy but they do a better job at filling my freezer. The small ones taste better, have a larger impact on conservation policies, and have more of a chance of getting hit by a car. I nuisance hunt for a couple of farmers around and average 6-10 Deer a year. And yes I eat them all. I don't bow hunt anymore but used to. I Turkey hunt for the trophy and for the meat. I kill Coyotes because they're a nuisance and in the interest of conservation. My passion is coon hunting. I'm an avid houndsman and run my dog all year round. Since I had my daughter less than a year ago I'm down to running the dog 3-4 nights a week. I have a 1.5 year redbone pup currently. My last hound was a HTX titled redbone. Before that I grew up running rabbits with beagles. I'm a Veteran of the NYANG. I'm big into Marlin 22's. I have a concealed carry permit but carry open as often as I can, because despite what anyone says it's not illegal. I haven't been charged yet. I own HuntingTactical.com and believe in improving the safety, effectiveness, and enjoyment of hunting through the use of modern technologies. I currently have just patented a stock for the Marlin Model 60 and am working on getting it into production. The stock is specifically designed to take advantage of a loophole in the Safe Act and bring back all the technology that law tried to take away. That was not a advertisement don't ban me yet. I look forward to meeting some great people on here and sharing some great stories.
