Those ATV guys are not suppose to be there they are trespasing. If I see them I will throw them off and call the cops. I am sure things will quiet down and the deer will be there. They always are, let me know when you get one. Mario

Impacts on small game numbers
GrouseHunter replied to Doc's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
House cats are a big problrm on Long Island, people dump them everywhere and they breed like crazy. They are protected by most of the towns it seems the cat lovers dont care about all the birds and small animals they kill. -
Impacts on small game numbers
GrouseHunter replied to Doc's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I know on Long Island a released pheasant or quail wont last a couple of days before the hawks get him there are way to many. mm -
As. a pup after all shots are done I let them run alone in the field 2 to 3 times a week. If they can encounter birds all the better but I dont put out birds they can catch. The worst thing is to have a pointing breed catch birds. I let them run till about 10 to 12 months and than start breaking them. mm

Pheasant Hunting Season Pics
GrouseHunter replied to HollowWatcher's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Heres one of mine from last season. -
I am amazed how well pheasants do in SD and ND yet in similar areas of NY they are gone. I remember wild pheasants as a kid on long island. I had a Griffon and I use to run him on pheasants between the houses in Westbury. The residents called the cops on me and the cop came he had a gsp he told me to come back later. We also release hundreds and hundres of birds each year on great locations and none live from year to year. I now keep my own birds all year so I can train.

limetedhuntingland/private
GrouseHunter replied to Dom's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
The land owner is facing lots of problems and I understand why they often dont allow hunting. I have known many who have been burned by letting people on their property. I have found in less populated places like Montana I have better luck hunting private property. This is because the landowner is not getting violated by hunters as often as there is way more land than hunters. Here in NYS we have just to little land compared to hunters and here on Long Island it is worse. To hunt state land you have to check in and check out at the ridge check station and it just seems to take somthing out of the old days of just grabbing a gun and your dog and heading out for a couple of hours. The reality of it is I now pay to belong to a club and through the strength of the club and our combined buying power we are able to lease large tracks of land that are private to us. So even though there is a price to it I can go out on private land and hunt whenever I want without checking in or any of the other state land rules. Lets face it the days of private property tracts being open to us for free are long gone for most of us. I feel very lucky that I can still grab the dog and a gun and just head out whenever I want and hunt some private stocked land and see some game. I dont hunt deer but the deer hunters in our club are happy to have a place they can leave there stand and ride their atv and see big bucks. I have learned to make due and find the best solution for me. MM http://www.freewebs.com/pheasant/ -
