My guess is that any other president - Democrat, Republican, Independent - would have handled this much differently and by-the-crisis book. It’s not unfair or “nasty” for the press to call a president out on his words and actions. Trump is literally his own worst enemy.

There’s typically a 15% mortality associated with C&R under average conditions. The fish doesn’t die right there but hours later downstream. Last season, I decided to stop releasing and only Catch-and-Kill to my need or legal limit. I was feeling that with militant C&R we were getting away from the whole point of fishing and the idea of “playing with food” was getting to me. It meant a lot of not fishing and a couple of days were I would limit out in 15 minutes. But it did make me appreciate fishing again, the fish, and my time on a river.

I just got back from groceries as well. Here, no paper, Clorox or pasta. Plenty of Hawaiian pizza. First time in public in 12 days. It was like we all had invisible bumpers on and as we contorted our way down the aisles. Half the people in masks. I really was at a loss as to the safest protocol in buying, bagging and disinfecting. My cloth bags or their plastic ones? Disinfect the car after loading? How best to disinfect the food? I wiped everything down, showered, changed and now the food is sitting on the back porch for a few hours. I may be losing my mind.

Chances are those were chubs. If you’re fishing, they’ll take a fly or bait. Fond memories of smelting along the shores of Lake Ontario. Bonfires on the beach and fathers in hip boots, wading into the surf with huge dip nets. Dip for a moment then pull up dozens of smelt. Swing the net onto the beach and the kids, thrilled to stay up late and help, would chase and gather the fish, and drop them into buckets. Moms, of course, would be tasked with cleaning the hundreds of tiny fish.

The beauty of being older is that you can be grumpy. This IS a forum full of friendly helpful hunters as I can attest. Hell, we even got through the great coyote debate without incident. So much to unwrap. I have little problem admitting my mistakes. That comes from age, experience and a reasonable confidence in myself while accepting the gift of my human fallibility. (Ask your mom for help with big words or concepts.) For what it’s worth, I’m neither a Democrat or Republican. Certainly not these days. I hold varying opinions on issues based on personal experience, current position, a concern for the greater good, moral centre and just generally thinking things through. Did you read the Whitman quote I posted? That has become a guiding principle in my life. It seems that Trump is now boasting about his press conference ratings and tweeting that the US gov won’t pay for Harry and Meghan’s security in LA. So happy he has his eye on the important things.
