I talked to guys,who have walked the whole Appalachian Trail who have seen many bears with no weapons at all they all said the bears take off as soon as they know your there . One gun is plenty if you take care of it . I think how many hunters have been killed by a black bear . I have never heard of not even one . Only hikers .

Hunting on public land if your not use to it can be freeky at first I have hunted public land that not only do you see hunters but hikers with there dogs even. When I see a hunter I wave and walk away from them if I can To let him know where I'm at sometimes I tell them if they are really close just depends if I'm on a trail or off the trail alot of times even if you see there cars in the lot you never see the hunters in the woods . I bring my cell phone it usally works where I go .

That's exactly what I would be using for bear Simi shotgun. Or my Simi 3006 . The knife I always have on me . Weapon of last resort. One time was hunting in a area that don't let you hunt bear just deer one poped out of the woods about 150 yards away walking across the hill I was hunting on . I just watch as It walked by at first I thought I was hallucinating never seen a black bear in the woods before my first thought was somebody's big black dog got loose lol Its shocking seeing one when your not expecting it .

I hunt this one public land for example. Public access is only on one side i see does there but never bucks in this one area the only time I have seen a buck there is when i cross the whole 1 .5 miles of it and hunt near the border on the other side that there is no public access to . Never see bucks anyplace else on the property. My guess is They get shot at to much on there and the smart ones figure out to stay near the other side where less people go .

My guess is since hunting pressure is less and food quality is better on private land especially farmland . Any really huge buck shot on public is one that just migrated there chasing does by accident. Only to return to its better feeding ground on farmland after the rut .
