That's a shame about the conditions. You see some litter up in the High Peaks too (mostly used tp), but nothing like you describe. When I come across things like an empty wrapper or water bottle, I pack that stuff out. For now, I'll be chasing more elevation. Mt. Washington and Katahdin are tops on my list. Re-doing some 46ers with others is also likely.

I've been passed by trail runners a bunch of times. Those dudes are a special breed.

That's a beautiful sight right there.

Wait, someone is using my name to brew beer and I'm not getting a piece of the action or any free beer?!?!

My enthusiasm for hunting this year is well not very enthusiastic

Beautifully said. With your grandson just starting his hunting career, I think you'll find many more years of hunting enjoyment in those woods. -
I think solo hiking definitely shortens the cycle unless you have a partner that is your equal in every way. It's not easy lining up free time with good weather while balancing career and family demands. I was also fortunate to never have any health issues; injuries and bad health definitely impact a lot of aspiring 46ers. Winter hiking is a whole different rodeo. I've solo hiked in winter conditions during shoulder seasons, but not during calendar winter or over unbroken trails. It's actually a lot of fun and there are some advantages! However, breaking trail solo on any long hike would really suck. I might give the Winter 46'R a try, but that's only a small thought at the moment.

So much going on this summer that any thoughts of hunting have been limited. I haven't even hung cams yet. Heck, I still need to buy a new xbow and practice with it! Ugh, I suck. On the plus side, this small hunt zone requires minimal prep time and that 'hunting mode' switch will likely flip on as soon as the first signs of Fall arrive. I cut my teeth on the xbow platform last year so a new xbow should be a short learning curve. I can't see being "out of it" for much longer. Besides, I really want to get my first xbow harvest this year. We all need a "Why" to stay motivated. -
Still available in cases in Saratoga County.

I pretty much swore off the National Felon League after all the flag disrespect, but then the Giants went and drafted Saquon. Had to be Barkley, right?! I loved watching him dominate in college and I'd be lying if I said I won't be watching "him" this year. Torn, but it's tough not to cheer for a class act and unique athlete like Saquon Barkley.

Knew you guys wouldn't let me down. Good brew.

Any good? The local shop sells a variety of their beers.

Thanks Rob! I definitely thought about an AT through hike although I'm stuck for a way to fit that kind of trail time into my lifestyle without sacrificing career needs. A 3 day trip to the ADK's fits in without much disruption. If I were to plan a 1 week or longer excursion, then going West or to hike Kilimanjaro would rank higher than the AT. It's safe to say that I'll be chasing bigger elevations for a while.

Must be a limit on likes or something. Anyway, thanks everyone for all the kind words and support. Greatly appreciated!

Funny you should ask Biz! I filled out and mailed in my 46'R application today and have the dates handy. 2012 - 21 peaks over 10 hikes. 2013 - 7 peaks over 4 hikes 2014 - 1 peak 2015 - 2 peaks over 2 hikes 2016 - 0 2017 - 0 2018 - 15 peaks over 8 hikes Basically, there was a 3 year layoff in there 2015-2018 due to me letting excuses get in the way. The record for all 46 is actually an astounding 3 1/2 days! More stats: All but 7 peaks were accomplished with day hikes (most of 3 in one day); I made 3 backpacking trips. 5 peaks were sunrise hikes where I hiked through the night. 18 miles (Haystack) was the furthest I hiked in one day. Shortest hike was 6 miles RT on Giant, my first peak, but I thought I was going to die!

Thanks B! Definitely no "gimmies" in the 46, but man are they worth it! Well, most of them are. Funny you mention Katahdin. We talked about that one somewhere along those 18 miles. Jenny said they close the trail down on October 15th. It's definitely on my To Do list, but probably not this year. Besides Mt. Washington, my cousin's oldest son asked me to take him backpacking up some 46ers after Labor Day.

Thanks! I also considered Wright and Skylight, each for different reasons, but Haystack ended up being perfect for the way I wanted to finish.

Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words jmark. I've always wanted to write a book, but never felt that I had the right content. Maybe I should give this some thought. On another note, I'm going to reach out to some local schools and libraries. They already know me for college planning seminars, maybe I can teach some classes for beginner hikers? That would be fun!

I think Mt. Washington before summer ends will be next. Ultimately, I want to do Kilimanjaro! Any of your African connections guide that?

Easy weekend afternoon project. Buy good blocks, dig a 6" deep, round hole, fill with sand/gravel/stone, tamper it down hard, level and lay blocks. No need for mortar or air gaps.
-
I do! You just have to look for my fire pit pics in the Beer thread.
-
How the heck did I miss this thread?! When my ex's store-bought pit finally gave out, I built one. I've spent countless nights out back enjoying a fire and cold brew. Best $200 I ever spent.

Thanks Dave, those words mean a lot to me. I'm not about to stop here and will keep climbing higher and sharing the stories. My small way of paying it forward, so to speak. Soon enough we'll all be sharing successful deer hunting pics again!!
-
Bwahaha...do I even dare ask you what a "sheep grand slam" is? Jenny loves all animals so it's safe to say she isn't going hunting, like ever.
-
Thanks TF! CBS last night to celebrate! I'm thinking Mt. Washington is up next, home of the worst weather on the planet!

It's funny, the worst "injury" came from a ground wasp that went to town on my right ankle. Other than that, some blisters, assorted trail scratches and minor soreness, usual stuff. Maybe I was just lucky? There was one time where I almost bought the farm slipping on a broken suspension bridge with a full pack. If not for my arm being locked over the one good cable before my feet gave out on the wet planks, I would have dropped about 15' into a raging Opalescent River. No bueno.
