  1. I just did my first one this season. We would drop them off before.Had no money so i said what the hell.Wasn't hard.I just called my uncle and he gave me an explanation on what to do.Hardest part would be not getting hair on the meat.Next one will go smoother though.Bet it only took them like 15 to 30 mins to quarter it.And two guys could back pack it out in a trip a peice.Hell i don't own a wheeler or a snow mobile and if i were to shoot a deer behind my house with a lott of snow on the ground,i would quarter it up and backpack it.It is a loooong hill from my hunting spot to my house.I use a homade cart when there is no snow on the ground.A sled if there is a little bit of snow.Hadn't got one when there is a lott of snow yet. Aloot of the state lands i hunt i am way back in the wood.Lots if hills valleys and ridges.Since i did my own i would rather backpack it a mile and a half than drag it like my son and i did with his first 8 pt.Took us 4 hours. We could hardly lift it on to the tailgate we were so pooped.Cart wouldn't been too helpful with the terain we had to drag through.Woulda took us 1 hr.quarterd up.
  2. i put the remnants of the last deer we boned out down in front of my box blind.Rib cage and neck and all the other parts that were just stuff we didn't bother with.It is the exact same spot we gutted it.The gut pile was gone the next morning.Tons of yote tracks. The bones are still there untouched. Now there is still plenty of fat and meat there for them. They just don't want anything with it yet.Been two weeks too. They are in the area too.I have heard them.
  3. meh.It wasnt the blue jacket.I had this happen to me in full camo with some cover. She saw me move.I wasn't still long enough.I figured if i didn't get the shot now i wouldn't get one so i wasn't paitient.I tried to slowly move to get the shot. The movement was what sent her bounding away. She was on bound and i have missed deer before.I wont shoot at a running deer especially without snow. I have had it happen in my tree stand.Had a nice doe come from the right side of me.I went to turn and my lock on made a squeek.Shee looked at me then away then at me then away.I was in blue jeans and an orange jacket. She never saw me.She was just looiking for the source of the sound. She did that for a while.I stayed still. She figured it was nothing and started to move on so i tried to move and she saw me move. She bounded and i missed. Paiteience is what got ya.I used to try to rush the shot.I got to the point that i won't rush or move till the deer decide I am not a threat.Took me a long time to figure that out.Lost many deer cause of it.I have hunted in blue jeans and had deer never even spot me.That is pretty much what i where when hunting gun any how.Blue jeans and a orange jacket. I am sure you know your hunting.Probably hunted longer than me.But my opinion is if you just sat there with out moving till it was convinced you were not a person it would have tuned and not bounded off.Hell you missed the deal any how by moving so what would you have lost by being paitient? She may have grazed on and gave you a better shot later on. That is just the main thing i have learned hunting the past 5 years.Paitience.Ever since i started practicing not moving and being paitient i have had way better success.
  4. Shot one this year with one of those balls on it.I simply cut it off.My kids were grosed out though. It was funny.I read somewhere it is from too much fertilizer on your food plots.I think that is just an assumption though, since there is only one food plot near me.And it is a small one they don't fertilize.I wonder what the cause really is.
  5. protected. That is interesting and a good thing too.I would love to be sitting on watch and watch one of these guys just do its natural thing.Grazing and such.Just being a deer, only a gohstly version. That would be one for the books.
  6. Unlike my uncle who could probably shoot a deer in a Mc.Donalds parking lot .Or my son who is in the woods for his first 3 hrs and shoots a nice 8pt.Or my sons freind who shot a 10 pt first hour ever hunting, even with a bow he only shot once.I don't have the "buck luck".I have gone years before i had a chance at a buck.I have honed in on my skill and really thought of what i was doing wrong.Cause just climibing a nice tree and waiting didn't work for me.These past two years i have seen lots more deer and passed on quite a few bucks. But lets face it.I know that big guy will be coming down this trail sooner or later, but is it going be my lucky day or not.Know what i mean.Still have to be in the right place at the right time. The rest is skill.I would say.70/30.70% skill and 30% luck.
  7. He still never said how they bottle it. How many of you are still using scents? I barley used any this year.had a bottle of tinks 69 but only used it a couple of times.I tried the stealth as possible method this year and saw more deer than usual just by beign scent free and quiet.Only grunting when i saw a deer far away to draw them in.
  8. this is the one he gave me.I love it.Holly crap, didn't know it cost that much.LOL.Guess he loves me.LOL. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=430328&pdesc=Primos_Ground_Max_Scout_Ground_Blind&aID=503AL1&merchID=4006
  9. The one my uncle gave me i could pull my Bow back in.LOL.It has plenty of room.It is a Matrix (or the cammo pattern says any how).cant quite exactly remember the manufacturer.I can get down and kneel to shoot to the right.Has plenty of room.My 9 yr old son sat on my lap last weekend and we saw 3 deer out of it.He couldn't stop whispering so they heard us.Wow, i never realized how good they could hear.LOL.He got bored and layed down on the ground and took a nap.I wasn't cramped with him at my feet.I really like it.Just thinking of a way to make it blend in more in the snow.Other than just being a black blob.Might use a white sheet and some velcro strips.Hmmmmm...... My uncle got the one from wallmart and gave me the one he got from Gander.I got the better end of the bargon.LOL.The Wally World ones are cramped.Wally world ones have velcro nets. The Gander version has magnets that stick to your gun.I just leave the net down when alone. Wally world one has two straps for carrying like a back pack. The Gander mtn one has just one strap that can be unconfortable for long walks. Over all.I really like it.Didn't think i would at first, but it is deff better than sitiing on a downfall log. BTW.I hang an orange vest over the blind when hunting in it.Especially when my little ones are sitting on watch with me.Even though it is private land!
  10. My kids LOVE to spot light.Especially when snow is on the ground. We just went for a trip around the huge block. We respect the land owners by not spotting within 500 ft of the houses. It's funny how people act like you are doing something wrong though.LOL.They slow down and look at you crazy like i am going to jack a deer at 7:00 at night with 3 kids in the van.LOL.
  11. any one use the chair blinds that you can buy. They are the fold up chair that has a clam shell looking blind that pups up around it.It has the netting in the front and side windows. My uncle gave me one that he got from gander Mtn.That has the magnets on the netting which is quieter than the velcro that the wallmart ones have.My uncle didn't like the magnets cause they stick to his gun so he gave the blind to me. I really like the chair. You can sit for a long time in it.I sat all day on opening day.I have had deer get spooked by it and have had deer just walk right by it without even noticing it.If you put it with some thick stuff behind you to break ya up it is a reall nice setup.
  12. if you are like me;it wont slow you down.Hell my 6 yr old got hers taken out and was wrestling her brother just days later. If you got a way to get the deer out of the woods(which you know if you can accomplish)you will be there.Just be carefull. The strain can put you out of work for a while if you hurt yourself.I am lucky enough to have two teenage boys and the rest of my family to help me drag a deer.A Polaris would be even better though.LOL.Good luck.
  13. hahaha.i busted out laughing at this.LOL!Looks like my back yard here in volney.Except its kids walking to catch the school bus.LOL.
  14. i have a heavy one that i bought from dicks i cable lock to the tree.If the wind is right for the afternoon or next day in that tree, i will loock it to the base with the cable lock.If some one wants to steal it they have to come back with something to cut it.If you are going to use screw in steps get a nice lock on or get climbiing sticks instead. All you have to do is move the sticks from tree to tree and can use multiple lock ons..That is the luxery of climbers tho.If you know the land you have a good climber you can hunt more freely.A few lock-ons is nice for certian trees that are in great spots and have no straght branchless trees.Like a big oak with a lott of limbs that you can blend in with nicely.
  15. here is what i do it is cheap and good for the environment. materials: cardboard 1/2 inch threaded rod with 4 nuts and 4 washers 1x8 board 4ft or longer. utility knife,drill,5/8ths drill bit, tape measure. go anywhere you can get free cardboard boxes.Take them and stack them on top of each other and cut them into 8 to 10 inch rips. Now cut the rips down to about 2 ft long.Stack all the rips up untill you have a 2ft by 2ft square. Cut your 1x8 into 24 inch lengths or the length you want to make your target.I perfer 2 ft to prevent the board from warping in the middle. Drill a 5/8ths hole about 1 1/2 inches from the end in the boards. Now take the threaded rod and cut it 6 inches longer than the desired hight of your target. The extra 6 inches is so you can push them into the ground so you can stabilize the target. Now what i did with the rod that took some practice but cut the time in half was to cut two angles on the rods end that is on the bottom of the target.I put the to end of the 1/2 inch rod in the chuck of my drill and just simply drilled the rod through the cardbaord. It slowly works its way through.Just keep it straight.Do this to both sides. Now put the boards on and install the washers and nuts to the threaded rod.Tighten down untill the cardboad is squished together really good.If it is done right there shoud be maybe a half inch of thread on the top and about 6 inches of thread on the bottom that you stick into the ground. I have built these for years and only thing that ruins them is i forget to bring them in out of the weather. They stop the arow from my mathews just fine.If it isn't stopping your arrow just tighten the nuts down more. Not sugested too much for elevated shots but i have one that i have without the boards for the 40 yd elevated shots when i am practicing.
