  1. As far as the area I hunt it all ended yesterday, but Westcher and LI go till the end of the month and in Suffolk county on weekends there is a special gun season(permit only) that goes thru the end of Jan. For me NY is over but I start up again in a week and a half in NJ for the month of Jan.
  2. If you;re a believer in the stages of the rut revolving around the second full moon(nov 21) after the Autumnal Equinox (this year was funky) like I do then it's right on schedule for the second rut. This year was a later rut then normal. During early bow there was a mini rut so to speak but if you hunted areas without a lot of pressure the core of chasing and seeking took place late bow into early gun in the southern zone with most of the breeding hitting second week of rifle which is why they seemed to vanish. With the full moon here scraping and rubbing picked up again about 5-6 days ago, saw a lot of fresh rubs and scrapes last weekend doing drives. The little girls should be hitting estrous any day now. Not every believes in the phases of the moon but I since I started following it about 5-6 years my hunting success has increased leaps and bounds.
  3. Where any of the grunts followed by a snort wheeze?
  4. This is a simple and very tasty sauce for straps. Add a side of tortellini and BAM a party in your mouth HUNTERS STYLE VENISON SAUCE Pearl onions: 1 bag Oil. Just enough to coat bottom Garlic. Sauté Chopped/diced tomato 1 small can Dash of red wine Pinch or two of Thyme, Parsley and Rosemary (a little less of the Rosemary) Let simmer 2-3 minutes 1/4 to half a can of beef broth Let simmer 2-3 minutes 2-4 spoonfuls of Tomato paste Start reducing A squirt or two of honey keep simmering 3-5 minutes Add more paste to thicken, more broth to thin, or leave it as is. Add peas and cook 5-10 minutes.
  5. It sounds odd but try making Pickled Venison. It is nothing like pickled eggs and it's not a meal. It makes for a gret snack! Sounds like your wife might have over cooked it. If you're cooking it on the grill or in the pain cook it no more then medium rare, closer to rare and let it sit off the heat for 5 minutes and it will end up medium rare Pickled Venison Sugar 2 cups Vinegar 1 cup Water 2 cups Pickling spices 6 tablespoons Peppercorn 1to 1.5 tablespoons Venison 1 to 2 pounds cut into cubes or narrow strips Cook venison (I prefer hot and fast on a grill or hot skillet) Combine sugar, vinegar, water, peppercorns, and spice in a pot and warm. Bring to boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15-20 minutes. In a large jar or any airtight storage container add broth and venison. Shake well and store in refrigerator. Allow to sit at least 24 hours, longer for stronger flavor I usually let it sit for at least 2 weeks. It will be good for at least 1.5 months. The really big pickle jars work great
  6. Yeah it is but I gave one to a neighbor that is sick and can't hunt any more and I give one away as thanks to those that let me hunt their lands.
  7. This year was very special opening day for me. My baby sister 27 (much younger then me) took her first buck and my good buddy took his largest buck to date AND it was his birthday! Opening morning I let a basket 5 walk and I am so glad I did. A few hours later while helping my buddy with his largest deer to date we hear BANG over by where I have my sister. The cell goes off and a very excited (close to hyperventilating) sister calls, she got her first buck, the basket 5 I let walk. It didn't drop in it's tracks so she did as told and waited for me in her blind before tracking. Deer only went 50 yards! Not only did she shoot it she also dressed it and quartered it. If only my step dad had taken one then it would have been a perfect opening day!! Also called in a big tom this spring for my buddy on his first turkey hunt. Took a trip to Ohio with a new buddy from my other site and we both scored. A younger family friend caught his big brown out the resv. 2010 was a very rewarding for me!!
  8. New to the site so late to post Attached are the 9 point (ohio) and the nine point with the rifle. Took a a couple of doe with the rifle and bow too. Season tally Ohio- bow 9 point NJ bow doe NY bow doe - rifle 9 point 2 doe freezer looks good.
  9. I'm new to the site so I am late to the thread. Took this nine on a unguided hunt in Ohio first week of Nov.
  10. none taken but remember sometimes kids are tougher then us adults. Thanks again for the donation man!
  11. Bubba that's awesome thanks. Hey don't make that bet or lose When my buddy (the guy running the fundraiser) met with the family there is no doubt this strong little guy will hunt. He said he is looking forward to be old enough to hunt. Tough little boy! If it happened to me screw it, I' be done and taking up fall fishing ;D
  12. Uner some permits it is 24 hours a day and either sex, but they request you take the smaller bucks and you must hand the rack in. The permits run from a week or two after late bow until Oct. As far as herded, nice idea but not really accurate. How many guys hunt next to a farmand see 20-50 deer there in the summer. Do you then see 20-50 using the small trail all traveling together during bow, no and deer don't yard during the summer. Individual deer groups will travel great distances for food regardless of the season. A lot of those "yarded" yarded deer will also be in those fields during the summer munching on the lettuce.
  13. The other site I am staff on has the motto 'sportsmen helping sportsmen'. It is great to see that most of you here follow/live that motto. Glad to be part of this site as well!!!
  14. Burt, a hunting site local to that area is doing a fundraiser. There is a thread about it in Gen. Hunting and this is the link to the fundraiser http://www.hudsonvalleysportsman.com/index.php/topic,2112.0.html
  15. That's nice of you to say man. Rhe credit ALL goes to our site founder!
  16. For a stressed out college kid you put it into perspective a heck of lot better then this relaxed 40 year old did!!! Well put man!!
  17. Hard to type sarcasm in a thread. Of course there is a difference BUT it's a 10 year old kid, he wasn't hunting and to imply that he should be considered a hunter to me is silly. If we are going by the letter of the law ANY assistance should be deemed illegal and as silly as helping scope a deer is too you, claiming a 10 year old is hunting by being a driver is that silly to me. Again, just my opinion and I hope guys are spending 1/10 of the time simply writing a donation to the family of this hurt child as they are debating/typing if he was a hunter or not. Just saying ;D
  18. Hopefully the DEC won't view a 10 year walking in the woods(driving) as a hunter and visit him in the hospital to give him his fines. Wow I didn't realize how many of my buddies young children should be on the 'dark night' list for sitting next to them in the stand or on the ground etc.... by this definition if the kid hands dad the binoculars or a thermos (to keep him awake) then he/she is 'assisting in the taking of game'. Of all the things that were done incorrectly and the fact the child was injured I am suprised this point was even brought up. Just my.02
  19. Thanks guys! I'll definitely being "inputing" but not sure how great it will be ;D
  20. I go by backstrapper because that's why I hunt and that is my hands down favorite thing to cook and eat! My motto is U shoot to grill! I'm 40 live in Ulster County, been hunting whitetail and turkey since I was legal, mainly with the bow(my passion) also love my browns and rainbows. I hunt in NY, OH, and in NJ. I'm a staff member on another NY hunting forum and was asked by a another staff member to post a post about a fundraiser for a young guy that shot last weekend, with John's permission I did. BUT now I'm finding myself stuck on this site too ;D I hunt mainly for the freezer and only shoot what I eat although I'm not against and I believe it serves a good purpose, trapping, yote hunting etc... it's not for me. I'm not the most experienced hunter but what I enjoy more then anything is getting young or old people into our sport or helping anyone that is having trouble finding deer, turkey, fish, find them. I've been fortunate over the last 4-5 years to be part of about 10-12 newbies firsts and a couple of seasoned guys biggest. My second passion is getting access to a parcel, google earthing it and trying to figure out the hotspots before stepping foot on the land. I believe the internet is a tool that only makes us better at what we love doing. My third passion is cooking game! I'm happiest when I'm in the woods,on the water, or working the grill and smoker. Great site guys and thanks for having me.
  21. I caretake for a neighbor and she had land selectively logged a few years ago. Another neighbor called and lectured her about the evils for logging for 15 minutes. At the end she asked' do you know anyone that seels firewood?" Talk about an agenda and being full of shite
  22. I'm not a lawyer but I would think, while not a bright idea, it isn't illegal. He wasn't carrying a gun so I don't think it would be considered hunting. Just a guess though. On a side note a few posts down there is a fundraiser for the little guy and his family.
  23. Barefoot... Hey, I think we went to the same school

  25. You may want to go back and read the original post where it states the surronding neighbors hunt etc.... PS you really think this orchard is on a island? If it isn't on island then it has neighbors. just saying
