Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
backstrapper replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
Crossbows typically have the same or less range then a bow. With all this fear I'm reading about I say cancel the whole hunting and fishing thing or require full body armour from head to toe make it a one day season and you must pay a gov't official to sit by you and approve of your shot. Anyone fishing on a boat or off of shore should have to have water wings, a life jacket, a horn, and life guard must be on duty. Trappers can longer use traps that may harm humans that may step in them instead they must use a noose but provide a safety release in case a human gets snared. Cancel turkey without a doubt. SHHH did you hear that? I think I heard a branch fall outside. New rule whenever outdoors must wear a hard hat!!!! -

I hunt in an area that is private property. I watch over and have exclusive rights on the 200 acreas surrounding my land. My neighbor has 45 acres and no one of his family members still hunt. Behind that is another 60-70 no one still hunts- next to that is another 50 acres no one still hunts. We all walk or ATV in the woods on logging trails to our blinds with flashlights or headlights on, use those same trails for lunch, walk out in the dark with flashlights. Have never seen a trespassor during gun(have seen 2-3 during summer months), nor has any of the surronding property's, people have to walk through yards to trespass and we ALL hunt in blinds or stands. Now please tell me how we are be irresponsible. Oh and if there is any tracking to do we get on the cells and communicate. Lot of different terrain, hunting pressure etc.... in this state. Why do most guys feel the way it is where they hunt pertains to the whole state. IF I hunted state land, did drives, had trespassors etc.... of course I'd wear orange but either way, foolish or not, it should be my choice. PS My old man walks off his deck, goes to the end of the yard, and sits in a blind, why does he need to go out and buy orange? PPS Again, shouldn't the focus be on IDENTIFYING your target not on Uncle Sam treating us as children. We're capable enough to give them tax dollars, fight and die in wars, etc... but we need penalties for not wearing seat belts or wearing orange, come on now. All pix's taken right by stands- notice how open the terrain is, even the wooded areas -

Now if that hunter had been shot how would that be suicide? I would think murder is more appropriate. Again why not focus on stiffer penalties and IDENTIFYING your target rather then asking the Gov't to hold our hands and tell us what we need to do and how to do it. -
can you imagine not following up a shot on this deer.

I can't imagine not following up properly on any size deer! -
1. Don't eat too much Venison chili and pickled venison the night before a hunt. 2. If you eat too much Venison chili and pickled venison the night before a hunt bring more TP then normal. 2a. when driving in seperate trucks in 15 degree weather make sure you lock your truck before using the boys room of a BP at 5am or your hunting buddies in the other truck will turn the AC on high in your truck when you're in the rest room! ???

A young 10 year old in Orange County was shot this year doing a drive. With that said I think it is absurd to even suggest makeing drives illegal. People drown in the Salmon every year should they ban wading deeper then your ankles. Boats capsize, no more fishing from a boat? Every year out of shape hunters die of heart attacks so why not ban heavy and older hunters? know that may sound absurd, but so does the idea of telling us what techniques we can use. IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET!!!! Why is this so hard to understand? ??? ?
-
Of course you can BUT with the bow every fraction of a inch counts and it would be best to start the young guy with the correct draw creating a correct form rather then a bad habit. For giggles take your bow and shoot it but don't use your normal/natural anchor point. It will make a difference. Now do it at 30 and 40 yards and see how much of a difference it makes. Kind of like shooting out of a stand and not bending at the waist. You want him to dictate his natural anchor point not the bow. I guess what I'm trying to say is, look at it as a SMALL investment in your boys hunting future. Even if you need to change cams to me it is worth it to have everything just right. Either way good luck and enjoy all the great moments you're going to have with your boy!!!! FYI it doesn't cost anything to talk to a bow tech.

I hunt zones 2,3, and 13. Seasons end on Feb 1 and starts back up Mid sept. It's about the same temp as where I live in the Catskills. The snow, ice, cold, etc.. is part of the challenge and fun plus it is beautiful out there after a nice storm
-
Most bows come with a draw range, what is this one? 1/2 inch shouldn't make much difference but if you can adjust it to his exact draw length it woul be better. Bow isn't as forgiven as gun. Good luck!

Get any flora? Couldn't resist! fishing ...and the scope of the thread widens lol
-
You want to lessen the stress on the deer herd? Take up fishing hahaha
-
You guys crack me up too. "The flora in NY does not promote the growth of big bucks. NY is not an agricultural state. The soil for the most part is poor" Burt maybe just maybe I was refering to a couple of posts not just yours. So sorry if you felt I was being misleading by using the word sucks instead of poor. Down here in the land of fake hunters poor, bad, suck, etc.. are interchangable.

Doc do you have any cranky meds to help with the name callers
-
Then I say scrap the whole thing! Man it's hard to agrue with you guys! There's no crops, there's some crops, there's farms as far as the eye can see but they're not like Iowa. I'm getting dizzy with so many adament points being made and then changed in the next post.

Only two more days till NJ winter bow opens!!! I know this is a NY forum and I'm talking about NJ bow but since I am a NY'r it counts ;D
-
Bubba, I'll give you amen for that. I guess the farmers and orchards, and vineyards around here(Columbia, Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, Westechester, Sullivan, and Rockland) are using fake soil. I better tell my uncle that is 304th generation farmer up by Syracuse he needs to move. They must be like us fake hunters haha

BBBZZZZ that was the bell for second period gym. Man you boys like to argue and get stressed out. Real hunting? Can someone explain that to me please? I hunt in three states(OH, NJ, NY) and in 4-5 counties and zones in NY. I just want to make sure I am doing real hunting. THe trees, seem real, the weather seems real, the deer look and taste real, the excitment, and the dissapointment seem real, the blood trailing seems real, playing the wind and the stages of the rut seem real, the bonds and friends made through hunting seem real. Can someone please provde a detailed list of what real hunting is so I can experience a real hunt. Thanks, gotta run I don;t have my hall pass and I don;t want detention.

Same boat here, but I am on the computer 10 hours a day since I am at my desk about 10 hours a day :-[ On another forum I have 1800 posts, yikes!!!
-
wztirem- not picking on you or starting a fight but your post is perfect example of big this state is. In the southern zone there are a lot of farms and orchards that are surronded by big woods. Perfect flora for big bucks! It's a big state and every area is different, that's why I agree with broading the AR but not state wide, like up in the ADK where there is 1 deer per mile. The food sources up there will not permit for large herds.

Wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it like some of you computer freaks would... That would be much more convincing if you didn't almost have 600 posts ;D just saying. I don't agree with shortening the gun season for xbows or for any reason but I am in favor of allowing xbows all of bow and I am a bow hunter first and foremost! I disagree with saying xbows are a slight expense. For some maybe, but you might not have noticed, we are still in a 2.5 year long recession and for some folks $300-600 is a lot of money. I'm 40, have broken my back twice, have arthritis in both elbows, shoulders, and wrists, and in 10-15 years would love to be able to still get out in early fall during bow. I will only be able to in about 10 years if crossbows are legal. My neighbor 43 has been hunting bow for 20 years can't now due to an accident and since he isn't a quad he doesn't qualify. Percentage wise bow is a young mans sprots and I think it is BS that as the older hunters that have been bowhunting for decades get to a point where they can't hold draw they now can't hunt. If allowing xbows during regular bow makes my woods a little noiser but allows physically disabled or older hunters, or some smaller women to hunt I say GrREAT, I'll just scout more and find more land to hunt. To not allow it is selfish and short sighted!! Cut back the DMP's, keep the 3 point rule, add it to other areas and that will increase the herd. Shorting the season will not since something like 80% (not positive on that number) are shot on opening weekend of gun anyway. I do know one thing for certain, if we all keep bickering and name calling and acting like school girls rather then discussing and banding together like adult sportsmen we will lose the fight to keep our right to hunt. Anti's love when we act like idiots and fight among ourselves! There is power in numbers, so keep disagreeing, stop making blanket statements, look at the bigger pix, remember this is a big state and where and how you hunt might be totally different then other parts of the state, and discuss! Don't bicker, name call, and lessen our power! Just my thoughts on the subject

You forgot to include the directions to your house ;D

I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK MAN!!! ;D

Orange is def. safer but I don't feel I need the DEC or any govn't official to tell me what I have to wear on my own property. -
...and the same to you Renegade Thanks guys.

We always leave a note in a ziplock , telling them property is off limitis now and to get it out by the end of the season or loose it. If we find one after the fact, we leave a note saying get it out by Oct or lose it and lastly if we have to take (some guys don't check on stands until their first hunt) we leave a note on the tree with some bright tape saying we gave you X amount of months to remove it you didn't, please call xxx we have your stand and would like to give it back to you. If they don't call at that point it's ours. As far as orange I hunt pretty heavily watched over private property but still wear a ornage hat into stand or when tracking. If I were ever to hunt public land this would be my outfit! Notice the two orange ping pong balls on the orange tape. They get tied to your belt loops so when ma nature calls you know what doesn't shot off! ;D
