I couldn't tell you. But I do remember being in a bar the night the rule changed. At midnight they turned the lights on and made all the smokers put their cigs out. The bars used to be hazed over in smoke by 4-5am, it was nice once it was banned. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I enjoy cigars (not while hunting though). Regarding cigarettes, that hasn't been cool since middle school. I barely see anyone smoking cigs anymore Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Buck knife wrapped in red handkerchief in my left pant pocket. No matter the temps, weather, species of game I'm hunting, state I'm hunting, etc. it's always there in my left pant pocket. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Or you shoot an 8pt but when you find him he broke off both racks from the fall. Now he's left with 2 stubs both are less than 3", so now he goes on the doe tag? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I just thought of another odd scenario that is possible. on the last possible day of the late archery/ml season you shoot one just before dark so you go out the next day which is no longer hunting season. are you allowed to carry a weapon? if not, what happens if you walk up on a deer that can't get up- you can't finish it off with a weapon? What about knife or noose? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ideally, I'm still hunting while tracking the buck from Friday and shoot a different buck with the shotgun, then recover the bow buck and drag them out together.......lol

As a first timer hunting NY early archery season, I have a hypothetical question/scenario: I am taking off work on Friday to hunt with the Xbow and I shoot a deer late afternoon and decide to wait until Saturday morning to track it. On Saturday morning, can I carry my shotgun (opening day of gun season) while tracking the archery buck from Friday? Also, what day gets put on the tag of the dead buck (Fri the day it was shot, or Sat the day it was found - but Sat date is outside of the early archery season)? Are these answers anywhere on the DEC website? Thanks all.

Nevermind, I talked him into it. 60 degrees now, but should be 27 on Friday morning. I will be hunting Friday xbow, sat/sun with shotgun. Hopefully a 2 buck long weekend!!

Yes, it appears this is a wild deer. The shooter also killed 2 other giants (170-180) last year.

11/12: no hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My Dad said No lol. He doesn't want to be in a situation of tracking a deer opening day of gun from the night before.Guess I'll save the day for gun season if necessary. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

11/11: while I was at work, my dad hunted dark - dark on state land didn't see anything. I got 1 vacation/sick day left for 2014. Tempted to use it friday for the last day of xbow, but not sure I want to go to our private spot before opening day of gun. Decisions, decisions.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It was a full moon and the ladies house where we park has flood lights that go on when you pull into the driveway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I won't go on and on but I don't buy the speed limit comparison. IMO, The appropriate comparison would be driving after the end date your car is legally inspected for. Your hunting license is valid sunrise to sunset, your inspection is valid for 1 year. It's a time period we are talking about here. To me shooting a deer illegally is any type of illegal kill whether it be out of season, without a tag, trespassing, outside of legal hours, etc Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So your saying "after" legal light is ok when compared to "before" legal light? LOL
-
It can easily be more than a "few minutes". Like I said, in my case it was 63 minutes and thanks to the moon and scope on my crossbow I could have easily shot my biggest NY buck.
-
You didn't answer my question, how long before or after legal shooting light would you shoot? 5 minutes? if 5 minutes, what about 7? If 7, what about 10? it goes on and on so where is the line drawn? For me, its simple. Its whatever the rules/laws say.
-
2 minutes past you would shoot, but what about 5minutes? what about 10 minutes? what about 30 minutes? what about 63 minutes, like in my case where I could have shot my biggest NY buck at 530am when legal light was 633am? Of course, I could have shot it and posted daylight pics with the buck and nobody would have known. But I would have known and not felt right about it. Just like the many guys on this site who post proud pics of their deer that were shot over illegal bait. Could I get away with illegal baiting or shooting before/after legal light? of course I could, but I don't do it because its against the rules and I am proud of the "legal" animals I have killed. Again, I'm not saying I agree with NY's rules. I prefer CT and PA with the longer hours. However, when hunting in NY I obey the proper rules.

I hunt with xbow. It was Saturday, 11/8. As My Dad and I pulled into the driveway of the property we hunt at 530am, an 8 pointer (that we have several trail cam pics of) was standing on the property we hunt. I could have easily shot it with my xbow. Being that legal shooting time that day was around 630am, I did not shoot and hoped to see it later in the day (which I never did). Yes, Belo. I had a clear shot. All I had to do was shoot illegally over an hour before legal light.
