  1. Im in Putnam on the Putnam/Westchester border.....I never hunted strictly for predators in my area. I will try my luck after the new year....all the predators I have taken or seen were during shotgun deer season....do the people in my area call on state land?
  2. I spoke with DEC actually and you are right....after ALL deer seasons are over, you can hunt furbearers with centerfire during the day...only rimfire/shotgun at night.
  3. So I just bought the FOXPRO Spitfire from Cabelas. http://www.cabelas.com/product/FOXPRO-Spitfire-Predator-Caller/734955.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dspitfire&Ntt=spitfire It comes with a remote so I can put the caller away from me...it also comes with 24 sounds: Included Calls: Coyote Locator, Coyote Male Challenge Scream, Female Coyote Bark Howl, Female Coyote Long Howl, Coyote Pup Scream, Coyote Pup Howl, Scream-n Gray Fax, Juvenile Red Fox Distress, Bobcat in Heat, Lightning Jack, Jackrabbit Distress, Snow Shoe Distress, Bay Bee Cottontail, Distressed Calf, Whitetail Buck Fawn, Vole Squeaks, Roar-n-Red Squirrel, Prairie Dog Distress, Lucky Bird, Raspy Woodpecker, Ranting Red Bird, Raccoon Fight, Crow Fight. My question is what calls should I start off using? Here's some quick background info: I live in Putnam County, NY (shotgun county only and .22 rimfire allowed)..heavy woods for the most part, but i have some spots where i can watch valley's etc out to a couple of hundred yards...there are definitely Coyotes and Red Fox where I plan on calling...maybe some Bobcat, but never seen them. I am pretty much 99% sure that where I will be hunting, nobody hunts for predators and calls, etc...so my thinking is that these predators will not be suspicious of these calls....an example is that many times while deer hunting and using a fawn bleet call ive had red fox and coyote coming running in, right past me. Any help would be great, thanks! I would assume cottontail to start?? and how far away should I put the caller?
  4. awesome buck...what did it score? I live in Putnam County (shotgun)...I'd love to see that deer cross over the county border line haha.
  5. yeaa i thought the crossbow would be allowed during bow-season everywhere but its not..being in putnam county, even if I got a crossbow id still have to wait until after the early bow season, then shotgun season, and by then, you're probably better off with a ML instead of a crossbow......if they ever allow the crossbow during regular archery, id probably get into it. You also have to take the class when they create it to get a crossbow license..like taking the hunter safety class all over again but just for the crossbow.
  6. Sorry man, you cant use a crossbow in westchester county. It's illegal. Check out this link for all the FAQ's about the new NYS Law. Below is your answer though. I just saved you a big fine, and humiliation in the Journal News. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html Question: May I use a crossbow in the bowhunting only areas of New York, such as Westchester County, parts of Albany and Monroe counties, and Suffolk County)? Answer: No. However, you may use a crossbow in Suffolk County during the January firearms season for deer, beginning with the 2011-2012 hunting seasons.
  7. I dont have any with that low of magnification...I have a 4-9X on my shotgun, and similiar on my rifles.
  8. It's not deer season right now anyway, so save a little more $ and get a leupold scope...leupold scopes are on all my guns.....22,243,270,7MM, etc....just my opinion.
  9. thats quick! How long does the deer skin have to tan for before they can do the taxidermy work? I always thought thats what the wait was for, for the skin to be sent out, tanned, etc...
  10. 8 Pointer taken by my Dad on Opening Day of Shotgun Season in Putnam County (3N). Spike taken by me on 12/3, also by Shotgun in 3N. I passed up the spike on opening day before my Dad got his 8 pointer. Decided to take him later in the year. I also missed a big Red Fox on Opening Day in the afternoon after going back out into the woods...sucks, but it was a tough shot as the Fox was moving fairly quickly and about 80 yards away, usuing a shotgun. When I got up to the spot where I shot, I saw a branch the bullet hit about 10 yards in front of where the Fox was.
