Some fun new stuff rolling in for the hunt. Goal Zero solar panel, weighs 1lb, some solar crush lights for in the tent and around camp. Not pictured is Kuiu pro pants, not sure if these will be the pants i bring. Thinking i want something that can zip off or atleast vent better. For rain gear i purchased Kryptek koldo jacket and pants. Pre ordered a Argali Recon 2 person tent, my buddy ordered one also. Ill probably end up purchasing a titanium stove at some point to make this a hot tent. Big purchases still left will be 8x42 or 10x42 binos, a sleeping bag, a garmin inreach mini, and water filtration system. Still need a base layer pant, a mid layer pant and probably a pair of whichever pant i find i like better than the kuiu pros. Up top im good,  o also got some pairs of darn tough socks in.

Except for my wallet , I enjoyed collecting all the new gear for my 1st elk trip last year..

I hadn't seen these lights before. I have to get some now.lol.

Have you bought trekking poles yet?

I like my bait casters for top water and cranking. Finesse, I like my spinners. I will admit to using bait casters with a worm and bobber from time to time.

There used to be a general rule of thumb to avoid a rats nest: Set the brake so when you give the rod a slight twitch the lure will only go about 18-24". I've used that rule for a long time, and it works pretty well. It's not foolproof by any means, though. If you want to have some steam come outta the ears, let someone who's never used a bait caster borrow one.

In the past I went with letting it drop until it hits the ground and stopping. I like it a little looser most of the time...

Oh yea. I have on occasion loosened up my fishing buddies reels when they weren't paying attention..;).

One of my favorite ones I did was on a catfishing trip.. I was sitting in the back seat next to my friends freshly spooled new reel. He was  bragging on the way there about how well his new toy was going to cast "all the way across the river"

On the rd there I unspooled 10 ' of line ,cut it and reeled it back in. We get there and like usual race around getting ourselves baited up .

Dam! He was right ,he threw his bait and sinker all the way across the river.;)

Don’t insult me with that BMW crap, we ride in style and sophistication…on Vespa Motorscooters.

Honestly though, a Subaru owner would never own a Harley, they value having reliable modes of transportation.

That's great !. I forgot about the vespa.. :) I had a lime green Puch, once.

I saw a sticker indicating that the driver of the vehicle also used a Harley as transportation. I wasn't quite sure what to do with that information.

Well you know it wasn't on a Subaru. Subaru drivers drive bmw or triump motorcycles..;) am I right splitear? Btw I had a mid 80s toyota station wagon stickered up once..lol

    Enjoy and great scenery

It is nice country, just like inner Maine. Although the mosquitos in May are epic . We had 1 trip that was frosty every morning, that was nice otherwise if you are not in the middle of the lake you will have to adjust your diet downward  by at least 200 calories to make up for the bug intake.;)

  7. Yesterday I got an email for this years directors meeting for a fishing club I belong to.

It got me to thinking of camp, which we havnt seen in 2 years because of covid. I'm still not sure if things  will open up enough to allow us to go this year..

It's an old late 1800/early 1900s loggers camp on a fairly remote lake . It takes roughly 1.5 -2 hrs on a sxs or wheeler to access it. This is after driving 3 hrs on the roug20190516_201106.thumb.jpg.ba27b1d21e39f7b1f69e9e24d7b40e8f.jpghest dirt rd from hell..lol. Averaging about 15-20mph... When our club was20190519_103127.thumb.jpg.e46c248d4a51ba5851cc01afe29b08f5.jpgIMG_20160520_204300755_HDR.thumb.jpg.fe285b9ba173624eab351b294f07715a.jpgIMG_20160519_163710550.thumb.jpg.0cc4714ba77a7dbbd2e7a7d8a230cb4e.jpgIMG_20160522_085006239.thumb.jpg.057470c539d1e4aef44cd32ecc0dbfe2.jpg started it was accessed by float plane only.

I included a few pictures from 1 of our last trips up. Notice the lack of fish pictures. Ha.ha ha. I've caught 1 trout in 8 years. Don't tell the bass or crappie, but apparently I am terrible at lake trout fishing.

After building nice things most days it's fun to slam out a rustic structure with  chainsaws and cordless drills in an afternoon..;) From trees to covered porch in 4hrs.

The slow charge on the battery from 110 volts over extended time causes excessive heat. That is why it prematurely wears out the batteries.

In the last 6 months my work load has turned from combustion engine vehicles to 75% being electric vehicles.  Being one of the only  certified technician in the area it has really increased my workload. But now it's more brain, and less brawn.

Odd. That is the opposite of what I would have assumed. Guess that's why one shouldn't assume .

One of the challenges in developing a rapid charging system was keeping the batteries cool enough.

My dad and I bought our first baitcasters in 1987 at the bass pro shops world fishing fair. We were playing with them on the plane and thought OH SH1T WE BOUGHT LEFT HANDED REELS! To this day I cast with my right and switch to my left and retrieve. My spinning reels handles are on the left. I think thats pretty common actually

It always seemed odd to me. A right handed reel has the handle on the right. . I'm right handed and always bought left handed reels or switched handles on a spincast..

Why would you want to cast with your right hand and switch hands when retrieving if there was a better option?..lol

I've been involved in growing hemp in NYS the last couple years. Needless to say it's been a complete sh!t show from the onset. NY State's utter ineptitude and inability to manage the program coupled with the Fed's constant foot dragging and changing regulations totally screwed every farmer I know who got involved. I can't name one person in the business that turned a profit or even broke even. I have associates who've lost six figures in the debacle with one I know personally losing 2 million. Everyone knew the risks going in but the smoke n mirror show that went on with the state management of the program made any chance of success impossible. They all got f'd.

Now they've legalized marijuana in NYS. I was against this proposal from day one based on the simple fact I knew the state had no idea how to manage it. The current state proposals are these:

NYS marijuana grow licenses will be issued to three different groups. 1/3 to corporate interests for medical marijuana. 1/3 to hemp growers in "good standing with the state" and 1/3 to individuals classified as socially disadvantaged.

Here's the kicker lol. Its not hard to grow, but ya gotta have a market to sell it. The current law signed recently designates that those with criminal records for the illegal sale, distribution or possession of narcotics in NYS, those with a misdemeanor or FELONY conviction, will be given first priority and preference when applying for a permit to open a marijuana  dispensary. 200 MILLION of NYS money is being designated to address social inequities in the now legal NYS cannabis market. Can't make this up . . .

I'm always amazed that there not any adults in the room when these decisions are made..

    Good information members.   Lol

I was more curious on the cost to charge in the road, not at home.  Anyone done that?

I'm seeing prices at $.25 a kw.  A tesla with the large battery is 100kw. So from empty $25.00.  Pretty good for low range of 300 to a quoted range of 400 miles..

If  we went with 300 miles we would have to have a vehicle that averaged 48mpg @ $4.00 a gallon to be equal .

I'm sure the EV trucks are not going to have the same range with the same battery size though..

I don’t do much bass fishing except a few times from a canoe with spinning rods. I have tried to use baitcasters a few times and struggled to see to benefit. Harder to cast, I cast a spinning rig further, drag is easy enough to set…I hope I am not starting a WWIV here -is this like a compound vs crossbow conversation???

Get outa here! Your not a reel(see what I did there) fisherman until you use a baitcaster..

    Just kidding..

For me my baitcasters outlive the spin cast by a wide margin.. I don't buy super expensive reels. $100.00 is about all I will spend. In the past I would wear out a $100 spin cast in a year 2 max.. Also you have more control of your casts and smoother

    I know.. 1st world problems..lol..

I did not have this issue until I started living on the lake for 1/4 of the year.

Didn't Volkswagon make a Wind-Up car several years ago ?

Reminds me of when I was a kid. We had a couple of old Farmalls.  I was convinced that I put more work into hand cranking  on the stupid things to get it started than the work we got out of them..lol It contributed to more than 1 black eye or bruised body when it kicked back..

There's a few spots at my work for charging cars and I've never seen a single car use them. The motorcycle riders actually took the spot over for their own.

Yeah, I think,  at least for the next 5 maybe 10 years there will be opportunities to charge an EV inexpensively. Workplaces , malls, or some towns even are providing charging stations.

When EVs are more common, I'm sure they will disappear or become pay to use stations.

  15. I don't think I would buy an electric truck anytime soon. An electric car may be an option, for local driving anyways. My gf works at a local university and I think they have some free ev charging spots. That would make for a cheap fuel bill.

Haven't had one like that in awhile!! Looks like that old Fusion line??? I hated that stuff!

Between gas for my truck, and high test for my boat, I will be fishing close to home on the Mohawk mostly.

    Love those river smallies!

Pretty sure it's Power Pro braid. I wish I could say I don't get a rat's nest anymore.

I've been using a bait casting reel for 35 years and I will still get one , at least once a day..lol.. Not as bad as that one though..

I probably should tighten it up a little , but I like it free wheeling..

I'm lucky and have a camp on a local lake. The boat is in the water from May 1st to Sept 30.. It's only 3 miles to the other end of the lake so fuel isn't a big expense..

there was a lot of talk about the opener changing to June 15th instead of the 3rd saturday.  Wondering if they will change that this year?

I havn't heard.  I am getting excited for May crappies too !

  19. Ha ha. Ha. .it always seems to happen on one of those windy days, while fighting the trolling  motor, and too quickly drifting past that overhanging tree or dock. Lol
