  1. Gthphtm... Did you order it from Walmart ??
  2. Jim335 .. I agree.. It sure would be nice to not have to interpret so many rules
  3. Arrow nocker.. That certainly is a good question. I plan on mostly target shooting indoors, but I had wondered the same thing if I carried it into the woods on my person..I wouldn't want to be the test case .
  4. The air pistol that I was looking at is the Crosman 1322 ( I have the 1377 and the shoulder stock when I want to shoot it like a rifle).. The 1322 can use the same stock.. I had never thought of an airgun as a firearm, but even if NY did consider 600 FPS a firearm this airgun should not be, because the velocity of the 1322 is below 500 FPS . I am NOT looking to use the 1322 for hunting . I have an air rifle that shoots 800fps if I wanted a squirrel airgun for close shooting in the woods. This airgun that I want is for target shooting with a pistol with slower velocity, like the 1377 that I have. And I want the .22 because.. ????? In Walmart's email to me they never stated NYS law, but you may be right Doc about Walmart's hangup I know that NYC has laws regarding airguns, but not in my County as best I can tell. I even found some sites that give Zip Codes that the companies would NOT ship airguns to, and mine was not included. It appears that some companies would ship an airgun to me,(also see reply above). I'm in no particular rush to get it because I'm sure in time the local stores will carry it, I just figured that it's a good sale time especially for a toy.
  5. I was sure that there was no Federal Law and even tried to find one, but couldn't. BUT I thought maybe something changed and I missed it. I guess that they just have a policy about shipping. I told them in the email that I lived on L.I. and that I was a senior citizen to eliminate those questions. .. I wonder why they offer it online...kinda strange.. I wanted to get it from Walmart because they'd ship it to a store and I wouldn't have to wait at home to sign for it, I would just go and pick it up. Also, I figured that if there was a problem that I could just bring it to the store and return it rather then ship it back ( There are lotsa Walmarts near me). No one around here seems to have the gun I want, so I have to find it online. I only want it because I can adjust the power by pumping less and then can target shoot it in my basement(it's NOT for hunting)...Also, I just feel like giving myself a reasonably inexpensive present ,that's cheap to shoot and I need a new toy.. Now that I know that there is no Federal law, I can look for a better deal online, maybe Cyber Monday Shawn ..I did see Pyramid air and they have a good price. I'm glad you told me that they were a good company..( I was going to PM you about this, but you taught me so much the other night, that I didn't want to keep asking you so many questions, and be a pain in the butt)
  6. I tried to order a pump airgun pistol online from Walmart and have it delivered to a local Walmart for me to pick up. I couldn't do it online for some reason so I emailed Walmart and was advised that it could only be sent to someone with a FFL because it was a firearm ...??????? Has anyone here ever ordered, or tried to order an airgun on line from Walmart ? ( I don't live in NYC so city laws don't apply)
  7. The gun is rated up to 600 fps.. It penetrates backups to my targets really well, but even with that I would NOT use it on game larger then these pests....whether furred, or winged.. , except a mouse, or rat.. Elmo... I never knew that.. Wonder if it'd work for me as I get older....I am bird brained already
  8. Shawn.. .I was using a Crosman 1377 pistol which usually kills instantly, but three times I hit and off they went... I used wadcutters because I thought that they would kill instantly, and they always did. I found one bird that I hit because I saw where he flew and went to look. It had flown to thick brush about 50 yards away. Another only went 10 yards. .I never found the third. I just thought that maybe it went thru too fast. I normally would pump 6 times, and get an instant kill, but on the 3 non instant kills I had pumped 8 and 10 times. So velocity was the only reason that I could come up with. I have much more experience with .22 cal. pellets and was considering getting a .22 air pistol for the VERY CLOSE range pest removal ( I am not really hunting with the airguns, I'm just getting rid of an abundance of pests). Thanx for the info, especially about the head shots, I just couldn't stay on the head of such a small target. If it's not the speed of the pellet, then it's my doing in that I aimed wrong. Thanx again for the info.
  9. Does anyone use a .177 airgun on pest birds like starling ? If so have you found that at times the pellet, even a wadcutter will go thru the bird and it flyies away and dies later.. This may be a stupid question , but would a slower velocity airgun be better I realize head shots would eliminate that, but sometimes you hit the body. Years back I used .22 airguns and never remember having this problem
  10. I took the 'yak up t the North Sore of L.I. to see if the Blues left , and if Bass were in. There's a saying here that at after the first snow the bass leave.. It was a little cold and breezy, but tolerable ( Cold never used to bother me, now I hate it). I headed up towards the east side fighting wind and tide and of course I see birds working the west side. I figured that I would give it a shot even though it was a good mile away against wind and tide. I finally got there and the birds were starting to leave, but saw some splashes...I casted, got a hit, dropped it , got hit again and landed a 30 inch , 11 lb. striper.. I only wound up with a little over a dozen, but all the rest were small schoolies. Now I got some hope that some bigger bass will come in ( I guess the Blues left that area) I kept the bigger one to eat ( 28 inch minimum). After I fileted it, I cut open the belly to see what it was eating.. It had 4 Mantis Shrimp inside it.. I caught all the Bass on a 4" white soft plastic shad with 1/2,oz , and also 3/4 oz. white lead heads. They hit a 007 tin,but didn't land any with that so the shad were better for me today. I cooked a piece of the Bass piece when I got home.. Really good !! So I guess snow don't make the bass go... I almost never saltwater fish on weekends, but I went too long without fishing so I'm 'yakin tomorrow in hopes of a bigger bass, As an aside, on the South Shore, Jones Beach is open . BUT ONLY the Western parking fields.. My wife went today to Field 2 and saw surf fishermen,,, The bathrooms were Not open, there are portapoties.....I think West End 2 is open also..
  11. I think that they are on a pond on L.I. where you can't hunt.. While I was freshwater fishing today I saw loads of Canada Geese, mallards and blacks also some spoonbills in the pond and many birds flying over. Can't hunt the pond, or the surrounding area for anything I went down to the bay and saw Brant,.
  12. Guns and Religion.... A number of years back, when I was a coon hunter on L.I. I hunted a good patch of land pretty often, and always wanted to, but never did ,hunt the posted property on the other side of the road..I later found out that the land was posted by hunters with no rights to the land, it was just to keep it for themselves. They supposedly did it at other spots too. A year, or so later, not too far from there, I had a spot to fish where i knew the landowner and had permission to fish. One day, while fishing, I was confronted by 2 fishermen who rather strongly told me to leave because I was trespassing . They told me that the guy who gave me permission sold the land.. I advised them that I HAD permission and that the name on the Posted Sign was the guy who gave me permission and wasn't leaving and that they should call a cop...I stayed and kept fishing and no cops came...We did the stare down thing a bunch of times, but that's as far as it went I later told a hunting buddy of mine, who hunted out that away, about the incidents and he said he had heard about hunters illegally posting land.
  13. Thank you both... you gave me the answer that I needed
  14. I never heard gobbling in the Fall, but one year at Cranberry Mountain in early October, a flock was on the roost really close to the parking spots and there was a lot of yelping and calls that sounded like it could be young one's tryin' to gobble...Really odd calling, I never heard anything like it before, and two of us "THOUGHT" that it was attempts at gobbling.
  15. I had a discussion today with a friend regarding hunting/pest control with airguns and he asked me a question which I didn't know. If you shoot an airgun aiming straight ahead and parallel to the ground( not elevated) how far would it travel until it hit the ground and stopped. I realize that a persons height and pellet weight would be a factor, but was just interested in average height ... we usually shot kneeling .. Pellets: (nothing special) wad cutter 14.3 gr..22's , and hollow point 7.4 gm., and sometimes field pointed .177 pellets .. The airguns we were discussing were : 1. 800fps, .177 air rifle 2. 600 fps .177 air pistol 3.. 500 fps, .22 air pistol.. It was a safety issue for how far it would travel, not killing range..I read that there was a formula for figuring this out, but I can't figure it.
  16. After losing power for so many days I have realized that I'm going to need a generator. Many people on this site live North of me and I'm assuming have had generators for years. A friend of mine had lived upstate and said that natural gas hookup was great, but I don't have access to it where I live. I was thinking about getting one that uses propane tanks(20lb.) because I "believe" that I can store it longer. Also after seeing the gas lines I'm wondering if propane fills are better (not sure where I can get fills in the winter.. gotta check that) I am totally ignorant about Generators and would appreciate any advice about gas vs propane, and anything else that I should know before purchasing one.. I guess I'll try to get one next week... I'm going to check Sears, Home Depot and Loews
  17. The below is for those who feel that the Federal Government will take away there guns : 1. There, at this time, would not be enough political support in the House, or Senate 2. The Federal Government does not have enough authorized law enforcement personnel to enforce such laws.. It would require armed enforcement personnel, regulatory personnel, other essential personnel...Office space.. etc. etc. 3. Since the new enforcement agency would most likely have to be created , the budget for such an agency would never be approved.( my wife JOKINGLY just said that they could call a new Agency the GEA (GUN ENFORCEMENT AGENCY) 4. The only Federal employees currently staffed to enforce such laws would be the military and I believe that The Posse Comitatus Act would prevent this, and realistically no one would ever consider using our military anyway. Since my arrogant personality causes me to always argue from either side, and I read so many sites where everyone assume and interpret so many things .. How's this !! Here's how they COULD do it, "IF" a law could be passed. 1. Pass the appropriate GUN law ( in this case I'll assume that some of you are correct and it COULD get passed) 2. ALLOW the individual States to enforce the law, since the FEDS can't do it effectively (Remember the Arizona challenge to Immigration.. Many citizens in this country supported the Arizona challenge so there's the precedent, only this time the Federal Government wouldn't fight it).. I always wondered why U.S. citizens didn't see the Arizona challenge could be tried by other States as they saw fit for there own perceived needs..(MY paranoia) a. If a State does not elect to enforce the gun laws, but the weapon enters a State that does, and a violator is identified, then the Enforcing State can effect an arrest based on the Federal Law... b. Since it would be a FEDERAL LAW, arrest warrants could be issued for any one in any State and enforceable even in States that won't enforce the laws, (by Federal personnel)..So if someone sends a weapon which violates the law to an enforcing State they can still be prosecuted in the appropriate Federal District. 3. Create a small oversight Federal agency .( I like the name GEA, it's catchy) 4. Hire Private Contract companies, as the Federal Government so often does, to aid in enforcement of appropriate regulations.. (Americans will REALLY like this.. Because as discussed by the Politicians .. Private companies are the job makers, so there will be private sector jobs created... This will mean MANY more good paying jobs, which is GREAT for our economy)... THEY CAN BUILD IT !!!! (good quote, isn't it) 5. The Contract Companies can ask State and Local police for backup when needed. There are systems in place to fund Police Department support,( good incentive.) 6. The new GEA will conduct oversight of the contract companies.(much smaller budget).... I'd have to tweak this because I really haven't put much thought into it( I just woke up), and besides I just wanted to see if I could go into my head to try to create and understand paranoid thoughts( a brain exercise)...
  18. I did not blame the NRA for the statement in the article. I thought that my first paragraph explained that. I didn't doubt that he said it. I was just TRYING to make a point that there were many other things to watch for. My comments about the NRA are MY observations and thoughts as a result of those observations for my almost 50 years of gun ownership.. I believe that if, as a group (gun owners), we don't listen to both sides we will be blind sided.. I BELIEVE that many people only listen to the side that supports their view, and don't question the validity of their statements, and don't know what the other guy is thinking.... I say.. ALWAYS know who your opponent is, how he thinks , how he fights., and who, and how strong his support is.. I'm not sure how Immigration got into this, but since it is mentioned I'll throw in my 2 cents( I have nothing to do today)... I am a moderate and listen to both sides of issues that interest me and read what I can.to TRY to understand an issue.. I listen to Right as well as Left news shows...I don't always make the right choices, but they are based on my research, and in some cases memory. I have followed SOME of the Immigration issues, and I have not heard the one thing that I remembered that was done a number of years ago. We all remember President Bush Jr, a Republican,. trying to get Immigration reform and that it was stopped by his own party. What no one seems to remember is Ronald Regan signing the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which gave amnesty to close to 3 million immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally before a certain date ( I think before 1982, but not sure). I remember it because I was very surprised that he signed it and discussed it at length back then.... So .. What would Ronald Regan do ?.. I think we know... As I wrote above, I had no thought of writing about Immigration when I logged on ....It's too controversial a topic and don't want to start a big thing about it, but just thought it was worth noting. Vincy.. I AGREE with you.. That's why I wrote and believe that the attacks on gun rights will come from other directions and we should be aware of them.
  19. I can't predict if gun rights will ever be taken away, I have heard even a prominent republican Senator say that something has to be done (referring to guns). I don't want to misquote him, so I'll refrain from naming him, or paraphrasing what I "remember". So we'll see. Besides.. Talk is cheap, as they say.. Politicians say lot of things. I do know this: There are less "federal" gun laws since President Obama took office The NRA supports Republicans, which is understandable, but they create paranoia for their own goals and always have. The NRA does stand up for gun owners, but some of their statements are predictions don't hold water, and make them less credible. When told about the less federal regulations the NRA could not give an answer so they decided to predict that he'd pass more gun legislation in his next term. Why not just thank him. If I was an elected official I'd be less likely to support your cause if every time I helped your cause , you criticized me. ( Besides FOX News were sure that the President would NOT be reelected so since everyone seems to believe every thing that they report why did anyone even worry) I'm more concerned over State, City, County, and, or local municipalities than the Federal Government. Gun owners are so distracted by the fear of this "BIG Government Thing" that they overlook all of the local restrictions. (an example).. When the Mayor of NYC sent NYPD to Arizona to check on a gun show, I could not believe that no one spoke out about it. It was a political move to push for Federal Control. Why was NYPD, a New York City Agency in Arizona. I've heard for about 50 years how the Government will take away my guns..I still got them, in fact I got more, I am not worried, and I will not let the naysayers rent space in my head. I NEVER tell people how to think , and never will, so if you wish to worry, then that's your decision.
  20. Oh my God !!!!! If he had a grey beard and was older.. he'd look like me !!!! Now you know why you will never see me post a photo here !!!

Shawn.. Got power back this morning.. I'm afraid that you are correct about the South Shore..I'm heart broken over the damage at Jones Beach... My wife hung out at field 6 for many years.. easily over 300 days a year...Even days when I kayaked all day I would often go with her to walk on the boardwalk, and would walk there all year...I surf casted there for many years and even in Dec. and Jan. would Herring and Mackerel fish from the shore in the back of Jones.. It was our second home.. We have many friends who are there 5 days a week (seniors don't pay except for weekends) . I get the empire pass because I go on weekends. I guess I won't see my surf casting buddies until we can drive there.. Well that's enough snivelin', whining and moaning from me.. SORRY, but I just felt like complaining.. self pity I guess... I'll be checking the North Shore Kayak spots...the Gorilla Blues were just coming in when we got hit with SANDY.. I got some real Gorillas, and it was JUST starting to get really good..I'll bet that they're gone, and if we get some snow tonite I'm sure that they'd leave..The Stripers would follow normally and come in good for a while, but who knows now...But it's always worth the HUNT even when I get skunked.. Also I got a secret good kayak fox callin' spot where I go and I love callin' in those red guys. Trout 'll be restocked on the Island soon, usually 2nd stocking is just before Veterans Day...Hope the State can afford it after the storm.. I also got my Largemouth/Pickerel spots. So as all of us hunters do we make it happen.. Good luck.. get some big un's...If you get some Big Largemouth (HAWGS) Please pm me I'd love to hear your stories, with details of course.....

Shawn.. I was answering your last post last Monday, when POOF I lost my power....I lost the whole thought now .. but basically I wrote.. It IS NOT your technique.. it's the way it's been for the last few seasons.. the bite from SHORE has been spot speciffic and bait specific... Ya just had to be in exactly the right spot at exactly the same time that the fish were there and throw EXACTLY what they want.... I can give you specifics, but won't bore you( I fish 5 days a week so I got lotsa specifics),....... The bite from shore will come back at some time and when it does you WILL connect..I just hope that the south shore beaches recover after the storm so that you'll see that I am right.. I'm still without power (7 days).. In the evening's I go to someone's apartment for a few hours to boil water to bring home, perk coffee and put it in thermoses for morning coffee . I can then shower and eat in the warmth and with light.... Then I go home to my "CAVE". So right now I am at someone's computer so I could send this so IF you answer this, I'm not sure when I can get back to you.. I did not get flooded and had minimum damage so this is a pain in the butt, but not a tragedy for me.. So I can live with it... I pray that you and everyone else here has power and are safe....

I did the light line thing for many years for school stripers in brackish water and did well , but although numerous, the fish were only up to 24 inches where I hung out. The bait was small and 4lb. test with a long slow action rod did the job. I had to match the hatch so to speak. I tried 4 lb. test in Jones inlet one year and again did well on bass and shad, but the bass that I caught did not exceed 24 inches. I moved on to 8lb. test that year when the bait was bigger and I took a 34 inch bass. I took a little heat from a buddy because I had to let the fish run a bit and was becoming a nuisance to others. I ended that because he was right. and finally settled on 15 lb. test with a different rod ( I NEVER used under 15 lb. test in the surf.) In the kayak I used 4lb. sometimes , but mostly 8 and 10 lb. test for years and got some nice fish, but of course the fish drags the kayak and tires them out so it helps . The problem was when you hit savage big blues, or really big stripers. . Also as you know big stripers sometimes hold you down deep, and I couldn't lift them for fear of breaking the line. I moved up to 15 lb. mono and 30lb. braid after I got dragged all over the bay by a BIG fish and my drag stuck and it broke off . I was using 10 lb. mono...Also in times of snagging and using adult bunker the light line and soft rods were an extremely poor choice. ( Fishing in a boat is a different matter, I used totally different gear , but I don't fish in boats anymore.) Everyone has a different approach and different experiences and after trial and error settle on what works best for them. Like I always tell my friends regarding tackle and techniques.. " There are NO rules". Just be safe, obey the law and have fun...Don't criticize, and help all that ask. Shawn, do you fish around City Island ? I don't go up that way, but just wondering... I'm praying that the storm doesn't push the bait and the Big blues out from my spot.

Shawn.. I don't know Crazy Alberto, but I've read some things that he's written. He writes some good stuff..very informative.I'll look for his Cow article. I'm not part of any forums except for this one and don't chase too many fishing reports unless I know who's reporting the spots, or catches... I've fished in spots where the next day I heard about huge fish with their weights . I was there, caught the same size fish ,and saw the others caught, and the reported fish somehow got bigger in the reports...Also, I know of guys that wanted to brag about their fish , but when giving the report told others that they caught them in another spot...I read the reports, but use my judgement. I sometimes surf fish with some really dedicated guys...there's a few of them that take some monster bass..They deserve them too.. they fish days, nights and all hours in between..Nights are the best.. I've actually only seen one weighed in (not estimate) 40 come off the beach(surf) and one over 50 and I fish a lot.. the ones my friends caught I hear about, or see a photo... Boats are a different story especially Montauk. I've been in boats in the Montauk rips and got some great bass (not 40)and seen really big bass that coulda been 40... ( Except for my kayak I don't go in boats anymore) If I wanted to hunt the cows I'd spend more time in the surf in Montauk...that's a different world.. It's too crowded for me(I'm not a people person), but they get some monster bass more consistantly . I got a friend that goes to Montauk that skishes (wears a wet suit and swims out to rocks and fishes).. He gets really big fish, but I wouldn't do that for a world record.. I try to saltwater fish as much as 5 days a week.. from late april when the blues come thru the inlets on the south shore, then both shores from May into Dec.. and sometimes Jan. for herring and some mackerel( I don't go 5 days a week in late Dec. and Jan. esp. in the kayak I'm a whimp).. I do fresh in Dec., Jan., and feb...and that was my time for the woods, or marshes I don't spend enough time hunting the cows... it's a flaw in my character.. I just love to catch fish of any size. I do love trophy fish, but in the salt I don't spend the time targeting only big fish..The exception is Bluefish, when the gorillas are around they are my targets...They can be as finicky as a trout, or so savage that they'll take almost whatever you throw, and are unbelievably powerful.. Remember that if you do saltwater fish you need a license now. It's FREE, but you gotta have one . ( exceptions are party boats and charter boats I THINK)

In the kayak or the surf, I use 15lb., or 17lb. mono on my spinning reels and 30 lb. braid on my conventional/ baitcast gear... I use 50 lb. , or 60 lb. mono leader In a boat, esp. when I went to Montauk I used conventional reels with 40 lb. mono and again I use up to 60lb. mono for a leader... I feel confident with the heavy leader that the line won't break when I grab it to land the fish. Also, we get a lot of big blues and if I want a little insurance against their teeth 60 lb. is pretty good... For the last few days in the kayak I've been targeting big bluefish. I've had the Gorilla blues bite through wire leaders 3 times so they would have cut the 60 lb. mono too. (I am a Bluefish fanatic). When the bigger bass move in to where I spend my days I will use the heavy mono instead of the wire leaders. For the record I have NEVER landed a 40lb Striped Bass . I caught(catch) a number of teen to 20 pounders, and some over that, but I can't seem to break the 30 lb. mark......
