Target shooting in NY

Can someone help clarify for me weather I need a hunting license (or any other permit for that matter) to target shoot on state land?

im not sure about other state lands, but i know tonawanda wma has mounds , and you don't need any kind of license for that... maybe a pistol permit if that's what your going for but other than that no...

no maybe about needing a pistol permit, if you're shooting a pistol...you need it

Many state land specifically state you can't target shoot there. Make sure to check the regulations of each property before doing so.

The only thing that I know is you cannot use live tree's for a backstop.I suggest going to the state land you would be shooting/target's and read the sign's.

You shouldn't I have talked to plenty dec while either walking or target shooting on state land and have never even been asked to provide anything other than my id one time.

I couldn't find much on the dec website.

It's legal on most state land unless posted "no shooting". Just don't try it during hunting season, If an encon officer comes by with an atitude you might have trouble.
