One pin to shoot them all

Isn't there a statistic for the average archery shot needed to harvest a deer?  I feel like it's 12 or 16 yards but I'm not entirely sure.

Several years ago it was 18 yards, believe from a DEC survey of some sorts.

May have changed since.

95% of all deer taken on the eastern states is under 20 yards, but how west it more like the average is 30 yards...

I would be prepared to take shots outside 40 yards in the west - anything under that is not logical in the wooded areas of NY.

I have always set up my bow with a 20, 30, and 40yd pins but this year I am only set up with a 20, and 40yd pins, reason be I like th .029 pins and they are to close together for all 3.

Good post sweet old bill. i was just coming on to ask the same question.

This is my second year bow hunting, still hoping for my first shot. I am trying to make things as simple as possible for myself since it is all new to me. Right now I have three pins; one of which I use all the time for practice from 15-30 yards (fine tuned at 18 it seems)  with minor adjustments the further the distance. I was planning on setting the two other pins for the longer shots, but after this "discussion" I am sticking with the one pin I am comfortable with.  I am banking on some "hunter intuition" for the pin placement if my first one comes in a bit furher or closer than my 18 yrd sweet spot.  That could prove fatal (not for the deer!) when the SHAKES arrive with my first deer in range!!!
