Dead birds in the Otis Pike area

So we spent yesterday deer hunting Otis Pike. I put a lot of mileage on for one day and noticed something that seemed odd.

I found a lot of dead birds, all kinds. Just a bunch of feathers in a spot no carcass. I probably would say at least 30. One was a hawk. Could it be birds of prey?

Hunters shooting at anything (hope not). Any thoughts from you guys that hunt out there regularly??

Ever see any Eagles in the area? I was going to say a Falcon until you said a hawk was one of them.

Haven't seen any Eagles.

I spend a lot of time in that area, as it is 5 minutes from my house. Could be anything. My retriever club trains in that area and we use real birds for training. Or fox, many hawks, falcons,small game hunters. 30 seems a bit much though.

Yea I thought it was a lot also. Maybe just a combination of things. All kinds of birds just not one type.

That's a lot, years back I'd find pheasants now and again, but they were shot and not recovered, but never anything loke what you found....

do you think poison is a possibility ?

No I don't. I think it may be the hawks in the area, saw many of them.

i am new to long island and was considering shooting some waterfowl. some questions about that

1) does otis pike have any? there are some lakes/ponds there so the question is whether anyone saw any birds there?

2) can i hunt waterfowl this time of the year there? Sorry if question is stupid, the rules seem convoluted.

3) map show something called 'cooperative hunting area' (shaded) and also something called ‘DEC area’ that is solid gray. Can I hunt in DEC area? Not obvious

Any advice will be appreciated
