MALONE, N.Y. -- Flooding continues to be a major concern along the Salmon River in Malone. Emergency officials say a three thousand foot ice jam continues to block the flow of the river, forcing water onto Lower Park Street. Six homes have now flooded and a total of eight homes without power have been evacuated. Emergency officials sent us updated photos of the damage caused by the flood. They say the flooded homes have about two feet of standing water on the main floor. The ice buildup has also moved some small buildings in the area. Lower Park Street, which is used by many as an access to two of the town's state prisons, remains closed. This area has seen flooding problems before, but officials say this is the worst they've ever seen. They say they'll continue to monitor the situation and are hopeful that warmer weather this week will help. noahmstone
Yeah I live a couple minutes from there and I drove by the houses as they were closing the road downcast week. It is being considered a " local state of emergency" local as in those 8 houses. the area has flooding problems often and wouldn't be my first choice of an area to buy or build a house. "They say they'll continue to monitor the situation and are hopeful that warmer weather this week will help" from what I have heard and seen this is about the extent of what they are doing to break up the ice. I don't know how true it is but I was talking with someone about this yesterday and was told that only one of the homeowners actually had flood insurance. That is somewhat hard to believe though because this area floods almost every year Just never to this extent. there was a picture in the paper this morning that looked like a picture of the river but there were mailboxes, telephone polls, and houses on each side of it.
