will a different winch fit

Recommended Posts

everything will fit with a sawzall and welder! the winch that came on my polaris was made by warn (dont know if it was factory or dealer option), the no name i put on my trailer came with slots rather then holes so it was more 'universal' in the mounting. best bet would be take your winch off, measure the mounting holes, go to tractor supply, lowes, harbor frieght, open some boxes and see if any will bolt straight up.

Main thing to check is the length of the winch to make sure it will fit. I have a winch sitting in a box that I bought from harbor freight to mount on my Suzuki.I have a Polaris Sportsman 500 with a factory winch installed on it, I will check in alittle while and see if the Harbor freight one looks like it will fit and check in to the mounting of it.

I have a Polaris ATV with a Polaris winch that is shot. Will another brand winch fit in existing mounting brackets?? Or do I have to but all new hardware as well as the winch?

Just a guess but I'd think you wouldn't have too much trouble getting a different one to fit. I'll also go WAY out on a limb and say that I doubt Polaris ever made their own winch, somebody (Warn?) makes it and they glue some stickers on it for Polaris.

Good luck and let us know what kind you end up with.

PS....I had to mount the Warn winch on my 1999 Honda Foreman when I bought it from the dealer. I usually enjoy doing tasks like that, not this time! It was a huge pain in the butt as the area to mount it was hidden from sight and then routing the wires to the battery and then mounting the solenoid were a real bitch. Oh well, I sold the machine to my buddy 5 years ago and it is all still working! Honda & Warn are a good match!

I guess Polaris used Warn up until 2007 (the year of my ATV) then they went with the Polaris brand which are Chinese made with a Polaris sticker on them. I really don't want to get another Polari$. It has been acting up for a few years and finally crapped out. Since the winch didn't work I couldn't plow this year and hat to use my Snow Blower!! (whats this world coming to?)

Harbor Freight has a 3000# Bad Lands? winch for $110. Length is the same as mine 13 1/2" I was just wondering about the availability of mounting hardware for it if it doesn't match up.

OK, I went and took a quick look and measured. MY polaris winch is 14 1/2 inches long and has about a inch of spare room between the two sides. The winch I bought from harbor freight was a Badland 2000lb winch. The polaris has 4 mounting bolts and the bad lands only has 2 bolt holes. It does appear that the winch would fit in polaris holes, but my not be centered. So at worst case I would just have to take the mounting play off and drill a couple of holes. Hope that helps

I was looking at the 3000#er because my machine is a 700 and weighed in at, I think 740# but Im sure 2000 is plenty. Im not sure what the Polaris winch is..I think 2500# ?? I got to tear it apart and get at it, as soon as I finish painting every room in the frick'n house. almost done.

Thanks.

is the house painted? how did you make out with the winch? with winches bigger is always better. if you go lighter carry a snatch block with your tree straps (carry one with your bigger winch too) you can find them at any hardware store and effectivelly doubles the pull rate of your winch. double the blocks and it quaduples the pull rate (pain in the butt to get set up but can get you out of a baaaad situation) let us know how you made out

Just finished changing out the whole damn thing. What a pain in the a$$. Not difficult just time consuming. everything fit fine and it works great. I only threw one screwdriver, out of frustration because I put the front plastic back on before I ran the wires all the way, so I had to take it off again. Only one thrown tool, and nothing broken, is good for me. Bud Lite time.
