Wny coyote hunting

Recommended Posts

I'm new to predator hunting just getting into it this year and I am looking for some pointers. I have some hand calls and a electronic caller I mostly hunt 9a (Niagara county). My main spot is a veggie farm that has a few different fields and hard woods my question is are coyotes skidish of roads as I hunt only about 200 yards off the road. There is a lot of cover between the road and fields though. Should I push further in off the road or does it not matter?

I usually leave spots like that for the wee hours of morning when car traffic is at it's minimum.

They can be pretty bold, you'd be surprised of how close to civilization they will venture.

Always play the wind, you cannot fool their nose.

Never used a mojo: a few questions.

How far out is it from your set-up point ?

Are you worried about leaving scent when you place it?

Do you turn it on and let it keep running or just turn it on when a yote is comming in?

The distance I set it at depends on the setup. Most of the time I put it out about 50ish yards away, downwind of us. The way that I try to set up is so that the fox or yote will come out upwind and I will hopefully have a shot while they try to work their way downwind, so Im not worried about the scent on the decoy. What gets their attention is the call, the decoy is just there to hopefully keep their eyes off of our movements of bringing the gun up, etc. I turn it on and let it run the entire set time. It doesnt have a remote. Sometimes it works, other times it doesnt.

Most of my hunting is done at night, because this time of the year its tough for me to get out at any other time. I dont use the decoy at night.

Weve had yotes come in in Monroe this year. I hunt Ontario and Livingston usually as well. Havent had time to hit my spots in Livingston yet, and we hunted Ontario last weekend. We had no luck at all last weekend, just saw some fox tracks.

In years past, Ive called them in Ontario and Monroe. Livingston spot, its olny been fox so far, but I know the yotes are in the area as Ive seen them and found their tracks.
