Visiting Chenango County in May

Hello everyone!

I will be near Norwich the first week of May for vacation. I am going to be turkey hunting and I love to trout fish and since we can only hunt turkey until Noon. I was wondering if anyone would be nice of enough to give me a few tips on where to go trout fishing.

I do a lot of trout fishing in PA where I live and I fish mostly big creeks/rivers for browns and rainbows. I own waders the whole nine yards.

If anyone wants to give me a few pointers on where to go and you don't want others knowing where to go, you can inbox me or if you can just post away on this forum.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Z

I wish I could but lived near Norwich in North pharsalia  off of route 23and always went back to route 17 and fished the beaverkill. still it is rated number 1 in fishing streams, has a great spot near were the delware comes into the beaverkill, lots of pools. there is a guy on this site called noddle and I think he is the guy to talk with.

The geneganslit creek that runs north from the chenango river (south end of greene), to north of smithville flats following rt 41, as well the otsilec river that runs from whitney point north following rt 26 are both well stocked during the season. if you check the dec web site it will let you know what waters are being stocked and when.

You are correct, of course, but the branches of the Delaware are no longer "natural streams".  They have been forever tainted by the reservoirs, Pepacton and Cannonsville.  Sure, they are great trout fisheries, but they are as un-natural as can be.  Trout...big trout...were caught in both streams before the reservoirs, back when they were natural streams.  Back then, the streams warmed up in the summer.  That warmup permitted locals to swim...fish (by wading wet)...and enjoy the waters of the streams.  Not so any more:  Both branches of the Delaware are too cold...even in summer...for swimming or wet wade fishing.  So...the twead-wearing flyfishers have a gold mine.....the rest of us...those who remember the good old days...have heartache!

  • 4 weeks later...

Chenango Creek in and around south Otselic is decent. They stock the hell out of it so 12-15 inch browns are plentiful. I usually park at the public areas and start walking, as most people fishing there stick pretty close to the parking areas. Goodluck
