Jakes, Jakes, and more Jakes

The only birds for me, this year, that have been gobbling are jakes! I always get excited, like this morning, when I call in a gobbling tom and only find out that its a jake. He had about a 4 inch beard, 17 or 18lbs (just on the edge of, BAM). He was about 55 yards out and then followed a hen up the side of the field. Starting to consider taking one, if need be. Meat is meat. The longbeards are out there though. I just feel fortunate that I'm hearing gobbles, sorry to those that are having a very quiet season.

I have passed on a couple so far. But Im in the same boat. There are long beards out there. A few days back I had a Jake at about 30 yards while a nice big Tom was another 30-40 yards beyond  him with two hens. The stinking Jake paced back and forth in the same five foot area gobbling, for a good five minutes while the big Tom just stayed fanned out with the hens. He never got any closer and eventually they all moved off. Its what keeps you going back. Good luck.
